In May of 2020, there were 179 cases at CCI and roughly 97,652 articles to check. In May of 2024, despite my best efforts, the cases number just over 200 and the articles to check number probably twice that (I think it's in the 205k range?). This is why I push to try and nip copyright issues in the bud where I can, and this is why I, at this point, have minimal patience for people that refuse to understand copyright issues. Newer people just learning them is perfectly understandable. Those that have been around should know better. If I believe this to be insurmountable, which I've started to feel at times, then maybe it's time to move on. ] 22:27, 10 May 2024 (UTC)

I appreciate the thought, but they tend to take up a lot of my page and archives, and I really don't need them for anything. ]

Thanks for uploading ''']'''. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of ]. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the ]. This criterion states that files used under claims of non-free use may have ''no free equivalent''; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Misplaced Pages. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

# Go to ] and add the text {{Tlx|Di-replaceable non-free use disputed|&lt;your reason>}} '''below''' the original replaceable non-free use template, replacing <code>&lt;your reason></code> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
# On ], write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, ], or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. Hi! Hope you are having a nice day.
You came up as a recently active admin.

There's been an IP user (190.141.160.124) who has been repeatedly vandalising pages related to sharks (only 1 day after being unblocked). I think I've sent around 10 level 4 warnings and this point and they've been reported to ] an hour ago by another user but they keep vandalising immediately after a revert and no admin has checked AIV in an hour.

I was wondering if you could take a look and potentially block them if you see fit, as it's becoming annoying to have to constantly revert all their unexplained blanking and factual errors over the last hour.

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Misplaced Pages, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this ''''''.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its ] and view its ] .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind Regards,

Latest revision as of 23:19, 26 December 2024

2024

In May of 2020, there were 179 cases at CCI and roughly 97,652 articles to check. In May of 2024, despite my best efforts, the cases number just over 200 and the articles to check number probably twice that (I think it's in the 205k range?). This is why I push to try and nip copyright issues in the bud where I can, and this is why I, at this point, have minimal patience for people that refuse to understand copyright issues. Newer people just learning them is perfectly understandable. Those that have been around should know better. If I believe this to be insurmountable, which I've started to feel at times, then maybe it's time to move on. Wizardman 22:27, 10 May 2024 (UTC)

I will try to be of better help to you in the other cases once I am done with my long term dedication of cleaning articles on moths. Scorpions1325 (talk) 05:00, 29 May 2024 (UTC)

Petter Karlsson (musher)

I'm not sure what you mean by "do it right". I didn't do anything, but rather the AfC tool did the work itself after I approved the creation. SL93 (talk) 02:32, 11 July 2024 (UTC)

Sorry if that seemed harsh, the frustration wasn't directed at you but at the AfC tool itself, since it seems to create duplicate project banners frequently and not catch stuff in the shell. Unfortunately script work is way beyond me so I have no idea how one would address that. Wizardman 21:59, 11 July 2024 (UTC)

Talk page edits with AWB

Hi there! I noticed your recent edit to Talk:Patrick Ford (boxer) with AWB. Unfortunately, the AWB developers haven't kept up with all the changes to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, so your removal of |blp=no added the page to Category:Biography articles without living parameter. In future edits, please be sure you're not removing |blp= from the shell, even if AWB recommends it. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 01:19, 12 July 2024 (UTC)

Noted, thanks; I just turned off the cosmetic changes option since I'll just be using AWB on talk for the foreseeable future in any event. Wizardman 23:13, 12 July 2024 (UTC)

Islands of Scotland topic

I am probably being a bit dense but I am hoping you can help explain the current status of this topic. In 2011 your edit closed the discussion with "consensus to promote as Featured Topic." It is now listed as a good topic but somehow I missed this change and cannot find any evidence of when or how it happened. Clues gratefully received. Ben MacDui 13:59, 14 July 2024 (UTC)

It looks like it was changed as the result of Misplaced Pages:Featured topic removal candidates/Islands of Scotland/archive1. Might want to check with GamerPro64 about that, since I haven't touched the topic process in... honestly I don't know how many years. Wizardman 14:48, 14 July 2024 (UTC)

Question

Hello,

I am trying to work through the extended protected backlog and I ran into the request on this page.

Talk:Attempted assassination of Donald Trump/Archive 9#editextendedprotected

It is in an archived talk page, but is part of the request backlog. Would it be permissible to change the parameters to answered, just to help clear the backlog?

Replaceable non-free use File:Steve Olin.JPG

Thanks for uploading File:Steve Olin.JPG. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of non-free use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of non-free use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Misplaced Pages. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{Di-replaceable non-free use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable non-free use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file's talk page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification, per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

This bot DID NOT nominate any of your contributions for deletion; please refer to the history of each individual page for details. Thanks, FastilyBot (talk) 10:00, 28 September 2024 (UTC)

Block Request

Hi! Hope you are having a nice day. You came up as a recently active admin.

There's been an IP user (190.141.160.124) who has been repeatedly vandalising pages related to sharks (only 1 day after being unblocked). I think I've sent around 10 level 4 warnings and this point and they've been reported to WP:AIV an hour ago by another user but they keep vandalising immediately after a revert and no admin has checked AIV in an hour.

I was wondering if you could take a look and potentially block them if you see fit, as it's becoming annoying to have to constantly revert all their unexplained blanking and factual errors over the last hour.

Thanks! :) MolecularPilot 23:34, 10 October 2024 (UTC)

Invitation to participate in a research

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Misplaced Pages, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind Regards,

WMF Research Team

ArbCom 2024 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2024 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 2 December 2024. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Misplaced Pages arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2024 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:08, 19 November 2024 (UTC)

Should I contact the journal?

Hey, thanks for resolving the copyright issue in Spike-timing-dependent plasticity, I was not aware that is was actually the journal article that copied Misplaced Pages! Should I contact the journal and inform them that this may constitute a copyright violation because it was used without attribution? EvilxFish (talk) 13:06, 1 December 2024 (UTC)

If desired you can. Since the journal itself also seems to be CC (granted it's CC-BY-NC-ND) I don't know if it would bother them much but it wouldn't hurt. Wizardman 18:07, 1 December 2024 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of John Ward (pitcher)

Notice

The article John Ward (pitcher) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Fails notability guidelines.

While all constructive contributions to Misplaced Pages are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Wizardman, see the last point of SPORTCRIT, which states that "ports biographies must include at least one reference to a source providing significant coverage of the subject, excluding database sources. Meeting this requirement alone does not indicate notability, but it does indicate that there are likely sufficient sources to merit a stand-alone article." JayCubby 23:03, 25 December 2024 (UTC)
I ended up AfDing after spending over an hour trying to find anything to prove me contesting the prod was valid, but nope looks like you're right I came up empty. (AfDing rather than replacing the Prod on the off change one of the other baseball experts uncovers something). Wizardman 00:58, 26 December 2024 (UTC)
Thanks for taking a look for better sources--I'd hate to see an article deleted which could instead be expanded. Cheers! JayCubby 01:52, 26 December 2024 (UTC)

The above I can say a lot more confidently that sources that would make them pass GNG are out there, at least most of them. Guess that's a medium-term task for me, making some of those look like real articles. Wizardman 02:15, 26 December 2024 (UTC)
