I think AppleInsider probably meets ] and thus it seems reasonable that they have their own article. Care to discuss it further? -- ] &lt;]&gt; 21:57, 20 July 2011 (UTC)
Yes, this is an odd one in that it's a transclusion rather than a template as such. As such it satisfies ] in spirit but not in letter. Of course, the best thing would be to get free images of the two phones! <b>]</b> 19:51, 29 August 2009 (UTC)
:Sure. If you look at the PROD concern, it wasn't the reliability by the ''number'' of sources present, namely only one that's independent of the subject. You can read ] for yourself, but it requires ''multiple'' sources unless it's won an award (a fact which should be cited itself). I'm also concerned, but less so, about the quality of the existing source, which is seven years old and mentions the site as part of a onetime event. Nothing about what the site is or does on a daily basis is sourced. ] (]) 22:49, 20 July 2011 (UTC)

:::Technically, one a PROD template has been removed the article can never be rePRODed, but the closing admin might make an exception. If not, it would make for an uncontroversial AfD. ] (]) 16:42, 25 July 2011 (UTC)

:These fall into two categories: full protection of nonexistent pages or redirects that sound like, but are not, Apple products, and semiprotection of actual articles. Pages in the former category should remain protected unless Apple releases a product of that name (e.g. ], about which nothing ] can be said -- at the moment). However, I changed the destination of a few of these redirects. In the second category, I notice:
:*Another admin, ], originally semiprotected ] due to vandalism. I will unprotect the page.
:*] has been semiprotected for more than ''two years''. I unprotected it.
:*] is not protected.
:*] has been protected for more than a year. Unprotected.
:*Edit protection for ] expired in August and apparently there has not been trouble.
:*I feel that ] would attract a large amount of vandalism if unprotected, but if you insist we can try it and find out.
:I reserve the right to reinstate semiprotection if a large amount of vandalism occurs, on a page-by-page basis. I also think that having sysop-only move protection is nothing to be concerned about. This was hardly an exhaustive survey or Apple articles, and I will happily examine any page you name specifically. Thank you bringing the matter to my attention. ::To be honest with you, WP:Chrystal is a poorly thought-out policy and it should be interpreted within reason per WP:NOTBUREAU. The policy was originally crafted with the intent of keeping people from publishing their own rumors but After I made a few wording changes to clarify the interpretation of the policy, in a discussion I was not involved in, a few editors got consensus to rewrite the policy with a blanket ban on rumor articles. :::It's certainly a complicated issue, and I don't have the final say. My key concern is that while it may be ''possible'' to write a perfectly good article about product speculation, it often (usually) isn't actually done. Instead you get anonymous users creating three different copies of the same article with poor sourcing and abuse of formatting and no experienced user knows they exist and it's just total garbage from a quality control standpoint. That's the situation I'm trying to prevent - ''not'' experienced editors coming to a civil, thought-out consensus. More harm is done by people who don't know what they are doing, or don't bother to understand all sides of the issue, than someone who has made an informed decision different from yours. I'm trying to take the raw enthusiasm and shape it into something coherent. How well I achieve that goal is an open question.
==iPod Classic==
Hi HeretoHelp, I'm rather new at editing Misplaced Pages pages, but I have been so angry about the recent alleged incompatibility problems between iTunes 9 and iPod Classics that I researched and added a page to the iTunes article and the iPod Classic article. You politely removed my edit from the iTunes page, and I accept your explanation. However, a different user edited my contribution to the iPod Classic page, saying that my sources were unreliable under Misplaced Pages standards. I disupte that and wonder if you could take a look at it. I think that editor was being too stringent, but I don't have the Misplaced Pages expertise to back it up. I'm refering specifically to the last paragraph under http://en.wikipedia.org/Ipod_classic#Hardware_issues . Thanks. <span style="font-size: smaller;" class="autosigned">—Preceding ] comment added by ] (]) 22:23, 29 November 2009 (UTC)</span><!-- Template:UnsignedIP --> <!--Autosigned by SineBot-->

:::I'll break your specific pages into three categories. The iPhone 4 redirects will never be worthy of articles, and on the off-chance that changes, they can be unprotected at that time. Unlocking Original iPad could start that whole discussion again, which I'm not opposed to doing in general, but the new consensus needs to precede the changing of the page. Besides, by the precedent of ], you'd want ], and that page is unlocked. As for Smart Cover, you don't even need to start a discussion, just generate enough quality content in the unlocked ] to show that it deserves a separate article. If you insist I will unprotect ], but I really think the accessories page will suffice.
HeretoHelp -- thanks for your reply to my talk page re: iPod Classic. One point: the problem really *is* widespread. I know this isn't a valid Misplaced Pages source, but for point of information, see this discussion board: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2151907&start=0&tstart=0 <span style="font-size: smaller;" class="autosigned">—Preceding ] comment added by ] (]) 23:48, 29 November 2009 (UTC)</span><!-- Template:UnsignedIP --> <!--Autosigned by SineBot-->

:::Please read item #5 of ], which specifically forbids articles on product announcements. This may be the part that you referred to as "a few editors got consensus to rewrite the policy with a blanket ban on rumor articles," but it actually codifies what I've seen happen naturally. When the iPhone 4 leaked prototypes became so important we had to include them (though I was reluctant), they were part of the history section of the main iPhone article until the iPhone 4 was officially announced. This actually works in your favor: it's easier to craft a well-written and well-sourced paragraph than it is to write a whole article and justify its existence from meager speculative sources. Notice that these are very different arguments from "I must follow policy" (which, secondarily and subject to interpretation, still applies).

--] ] 00:32, 15 December 2009 (UTC)

::I'd like to emphasize another nuance of the policy, which is that plenty of topics which should not have a separate article can be mentioned or even discussed at length in articles not solely about them. My recommendation to you is to shift your focus from what ''articles'' we do or do not have to what ''content'' we have. Notice whether and to what extent it is organized, coherent, easy to maintain, well-sourced, and links to other content when appropriate. Cheers, ] (]) 04:28, 5 December 2011 (UTC)

Dear HereToHelp,

My name is Jonathan Obar ], I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Misplaced Pages administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community], where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:
* Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
* Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
* All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
* All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
* The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your name] instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

; From the editor
Welcome to the (slightly delayed) third issue of the ] newsletter.

The past month has once again been a busy one for my fellowship. The full ] from the extensive user survey on help pages are now available, and make interesting reading. These do confirm a number of our suspicions about Misplaced Pages help, and suggest that the ] for the remainder of the fellowship is a sound approach.

Also last month I was fortunate enough to attend Wikimania 2012 in Washington DC, where I gave a presentation about help pages and the aforementioned survey results. You can find the slides from this ]. Wikimania was also a great opportunity for many discussions with staff and community members, and these brought up some interesting ideas which I hope to follow up on.

One of the things much discussed was the planned tutorial pages. I've been working on a new design for them which can be seen at ], please let me know what you think (especially if you spot any bugs!).

Any comments or suggestions for future issues are welcome at ]. If you don't wish to receive this newsletter on your talk page in future then just edit the ] and add "no newsletter" next to your name.

== Extended confirmed protection ==

{{ivmbox|1=Hello, HereToHelp. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

== A new user right for New Page Patrollers ==

Hi {{BASEPAGENAME}}.

A new user group, ], has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at ]. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available ] but very often a friendly custom message works best.

== Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular) ==

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are ] to "have strong passwords and ]." We have ] our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. AppleInsider

I think AppleInsider probably meets WP:RS and thus it seems reasonable that they have their own article. Care to discuss it further? -- Eraserhead1 <talk> 21:57, 20 July 2011 (UTC)

Sure. If you look at the PROD concern, it wasn't the reliability by the number of sources present, namely only one that's independent of the subject. You can read Misplaced Pages:Notability (web)#Criteria for yourself, but it requires multiple sources unless it's won an award (a fact which should be cited itself). I'm also concerned, but less so, about the quality of the existing source, which is seven years old and mentions the site as part of a onetime event. Nothing about what the site is or does on a daily basis is sourced. HereToHelp 22:49, 20 July 2011 (UTC)
I don't know what you can write about so I've re-prodded it. I guess if its deleted it should redirect to Apple Rumor Community. -- Eraserhead1 <talk> 07:09, 25 July 2011 (UTC)
Technically, one a PROD template has been removed the article can never be rePRODed, but the closing admin might make an exception. If not, it would make for an uncontroversial AfD. HereToHelp 16:42, 25 July 2011 (UTC)

Non-free rationale for File:Nanosaur2Screenshot2.png

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Nanosaur2Screenshot2.png. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Misplaced Pages is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Misplaced Pages page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Unprotect

Can you please go through your your protection logs and remove any outdated protections, particularly to Apple-related articles? Marcus Qwertyus 00:49, 4 December 2011 (UTC)

These fall into two categories: full protection of nonexistent pages or redirects that sound like, but are not, Apple products, and semiprotection of actual articles. Pages in the former category should remain protected unless Apple releases a product of that name (e.g. iPad 3, about which nothing verifiable can be said -- at the moment). However, I changed the destination of a few of these redirects. In the second category, I notice:
  • Another admin, Courcelles, originally semiprotected iPad due to vandalism. I will unprotect the page.
  • iPod has been semiprotected for more than two years. I unprotected it.
  • iPhone is not protected.
  • Apple Inc. has been protected for more than a year. Unprotected.
  • Edit protection for Macintosh expired in August and apparently there has not been trouble.
  • I feel that Steve Jobs would attract a large amount of vandalism if unprotected, but if you insist we can try it and find out.
I reserve the right to reinstate semiprotection if a large amount of vandalism occurs, on a page-by-page basis. I also think that having sysop-only move protection is nothing to be concerned about. This was hardly an exhaustive survey or Apple articles, and I will happily examine any page you name specifically. Thank you bringing the matter to my attention. Cheers, HereToHelp 05:39, 4 December 2011 (UTC)
I was thinking more along the lines of IPhone 4gs, iPhone four, iPhone 4 prototype, Original iPad, Smart Cover, and Smart Covers. (I don't see how a small discussion can be made mandatorily enforceable by page protection)

To be honest with you, WP:Chrystal is a poorly thought-out policy and it should be interpreted within reason per WP:NOTBUREAU. The policy was originally crafted with the intent of keeping people from publishing their own rumors but "does not put a blanket bar on all speculation from outside sources." After I made a few wording changes to clarify the interpretation of the policy, in a discussion I was not involved in, a few editors got consensus to rewrite the policy with a blanket ban on rumor articles. The new policy does not appear to be within reason. If this shot in the dark, or all these can get an article, why can't iPhone 4S? If we're not supposed to document unacknowledged products then how are we supposed to document unacknowledged government special access programs like Area 51? Marcus Qwertyus 07:07, 4 December 2011 (UTC)
It's certainly a complicated issue, and I don't have the final say. My key concern is that while it may be possible to write a perfectly good article about product speculation, it often (usually) isn't actually done. Instead you get anonymous users creating three different copies of the same article with poor sourcing and abuse of formatting and no experienced user knows they exist and it's just total garbage from a quality control standpoint. That's the situation I'm trying to prevent - not experienced editors coming to a civil, thought-out consensus. More harm is done by people who don't know what they are doing, or don't bother to understand all sides of the issue, than someone who has made an informed decision different from yours. I'm trying to take the raw enthusiasm and shape it into something coherent. How well I achieve that goal is an open question.
I'll break your specific pages into three categories. The iPhone 4 redirects will never be worthy of articles, and on the off-chance that changes, they can be unprotected at that time. Unlocking Original iPad could start that whole discussion again, which I'm not opposed to doing in general, but the new consensus needs to precede the changing of the page. Besides, by the precedent of iPhone (original), you'd want iPad (original), and that page is unlocked. As for Smart Cover, you don't even need to start a discussion, just generate enough quality content in the unlocked iPad accessories#Smart Cover to show that it deserves a separate article. If you insist I will unprotect Smart Cover, but I really think the accessories page will suffice.
Please read item #5 of WP:CRYSTAL, which specifically forbids articles on product announcements.
I'd like to emphasize another nuance of the policy, which is that plenty of topics which should not have a separate article can be mentioned or even discussed at length in articles not solely about them. My recommendation to you is to shift your focus from what articles we do or do not have to what content we have. Notice whether and to what extent it is organized, coherent, easy to maintain, well-sourced, and links to other content when appropriate. Cheers, HereToHelp 04:28, 5 December 2011 (UTC)

MSU Interview

Dear HereToHelp,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Misplaced Pages administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the communityHERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review).

If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your nameHERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chlopeck (talkcontribs) 22:48, 15 February 2012 (UTC)

iPad 3

Hello, many rumors have it that the "iPad 3" might be released tomorrow. I have started a document on my computer for it in Word. But when it was released I want to upload it instantly. But I am unable to, because you have created a redirect from the page so I cant edit it. It can currently only be edited by admins. It would be great if you could make this page, "semi-protected", so when it is released tomorrow I can put up the article that second. Thank you.-- DreamFieldArts 11:23, 6 March 2012 (UTC)

I've been through enough of these that I know better than to try and hold back the fans. Try not to go too crazy. HereToHelp 02:08, 7 March 2012 (UTC)

The page, Smart Covers redirects to iPad, this needs to be changed so it redirects to iPad accessories#Smart Cover like the Smart Cover page does. It you could unprotect it so it can be changed, that would be great. --Astros4477 (talk) 04:11, 9 March 2012 (UTC)

Hello from the Help Project, and welcome to the second issue of our newsletter!

The biggest project I've been working on this month has been a large survey of users to find out what they think of our current help pages. Preliminary results from this are now available, although there are more responses trickling in from the lower edit count groups since a batch of email invitations were recently sent out. Finalised results and further analysis should be posted next week.

From the editor

Welcome to the (slightly delayed) third issue of the Help Project newsletter.

The past month has once again been a busy one for my fellowship. The full results and conclusions from the extensive user survey on help pages are now available, and make interesting reading. These do confirm a number of our suspicions about Misplaced Pages help, and suggest that the current plan for the remainder of the fellowship is a sound approach.

Also last month I was fortunate enough to attend Wikimania 2012 in Washington DC, where I gave a presentation about help pages and the aforementioned survey results. You can find the slides from this on Commons. Wikimania was also a great opportunity for many discussions with staff and community members, and these brought up some interesting ideas which I hope to follow up on.

One of the things much discussed was the planned tutorial pages. I've been working on a new design for them which can be seen at User:The wub/sandbox/1, please let me know what you think (especially if you spot any bugs!).

Help Project newsletter : Issue 4

The Help Project Newsletter
Issue IV - September 2012
Project news summary

From the editor

Hi, and welcome to the fourth issue of the Help Project newsletter.

It's been another busy month in the world of Misplaced Pages help. The results from the in-person usability tests conducted as part of the help pages fellowship have been released. There are no great surprises here, the tests confirmed that people have trouble with the existing help system, and people looking for help on the same topic often end up at wildly different pages. Editors who experienced a tutorial and/or edited a sandbox as part of their learning were noticeably more confident when editing a real article.

Drawing on that, three new "Introduction to" tutorials for new users have been created: referencing, uploading images and navigating Misplaced Pages. These join the popular existing introductions to policies and guidelines and talk pages. Feel free to edit them, but please do remember that the idea is to keep them simple and as free from extraneous details as possible. All three have been added to Help:Getting started, which is intended to be the new focal point for new editors, and will also be seeing a redesign soon.

In other news, the Article Feedback Tool (AFT) can now be used to collect feedback on help pages. By default it has been deployed to all pages in the Help: namespace. It can be disabled on any page by adding Category:Article Feedback Blacklist, or enabled for pages in other namespaces by adding Category:Article Feedback 5 Additional Articles. Once a page has AFT applied, you can add feedback using the form which appears at the bottom of it. Feedback can be reviewed by clicking "View feedback" in the sidebar, or the "Feedback from my watched pages" link at the top of your watchlist.

I'm now entering the final month of my fellowship, and will be focusing my efforts on making much needed improvements to Help:Contents, the main entrance point to our help system. It's been a pleasure working as a fellow, and I just want to thank all the people who have helped me or offered advice over the past months. That definitely won't be the end of my involvement in the Help Project though, I'll be sticking around as a volunteer and continuing to write this newsletter.

Any comments or suggestions for future issues are welcome at Misplaced Pages:Help Project/Newsletter. If you don't wish to receive this newsletter on your talk page in future then just edit the participants page and add "no newsletter" next to your name.

We noticed though that when you edited Livewire (networking), you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages XLR and RJ-45 (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Help Project newsletter : Issue 5

The Help Project Newsletter
Issue V - January 2013
Project news summary
From the editor

Hello again from the Help Project!

In the last newsletter (which was quite a while ago sorry!) I talked about my fellowship and the plans for improving the main portal page, Help:Contents. Well I'm sad to say that my fellowship is now over, but very happy to say that the proposed improvements to that page have been completed and implemented. Do check it out if you haven't already.

Another important and frequently used help page, Misplaced Pages:Contact us, has also seen a significant revamp. You may recognise the design inspiration from the new tutorial pages.

In project news, we now have a subscription to the "article alerts" service. Any deletion nominations, move discussions, or requests for comments on pages within the Help Project's scope will now show up at Misplaced Pages:Help Project/Article alerts. So that's definitely a page which project members might want to watch.

Any comments or suggestions for future issues are welcome at Misplaced Pages:Help Project/Newsletter. If you don't wish to receive this newsletter on your talk page in future then just edit the participants page and add "no newsletter" next to your name.

Winter storm naming

I just wanted to make you aware of this discussion I started at Winter storm naming. I have no intentions of making any changes to the article myself, but was just hoping to get input from editors previously involved in the article (or recently-closed AfD) in an effort to improve the article and clarify its purpose. I will leave any changes to the consensus of other editors who decide what's best. Your participation would be welcome, regardless of your views on the issue. Thank you. 76.189.111.199 (talk) 22:23, 18 February 2013 (UTC)

Open Help Conference

The Open Help Conference will be taking place June 15-19 in Cincinnati Ohio, USA. The conference includes two days of presentations and open discussions, followed by team "sprints" - collaborative efforts to write and improve documentation.

It has been suggested to send a team from Misplaced Pages/Wikimedia: to share our own knowledge about help, learn from others in the open source community working on similar problems, and to carry out a sprint to improve some aspect of Misplaced Pages's help.

There may be support available for volunteers to attend from the Participation Support program (and your editor is certainly hoping to be there!) Please join the discussion in Meta's IdeaLab if you're interested, and/or have suggestions about what we could work on.

WP Apple Inc. in the Signpost

The WikiProject Report would like to focus on WikiProject Apple Inc. for a Signpost article. This is an excellent opportunity to draw attention to your efforts and attract new members to the project. Would you be willing to participate in an interview? If so, here are the questions for the interview. Just add your response below each question and feel free to skip any questions that you don't feel comfortable answering. Multiple editors will have an opportunity to respond to the interview questions, so be sure to sign your answers. If you know anyone else who would like to participate in the interview, please share this with them. Have a great day. –Mabeenot (talk) 12:28, 11 November 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for protecting and reverting the IP on the For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology article. Nothing he added was constructive. I was surprised to see that the protection wasn't to prevent vandalism related to the current FRC season. Chris857 (talk) 00:45, 6 January 2014 (UTC)

You're welcome! Yes, it is weird to see fairly generic vandalism given the timing. HereToHelp 01:34, 6 January 2014 (UTC)

ArbCom elections are now open!

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Misplaced Pages arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Extended confirmed protection

Hello, HereToHelp. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Misplaced Pages:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:48, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers

Hi HereToHelp.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM.

User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Actio

Notice

The article Actio has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

WP:NOTDIC

While all constructive contributions to Misplaced Pages are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. - CHAMPION 00:23, 17 September 2018 (UTC)

ArbCom 2019 special circular

Icon of a white exclamation mark within a black triangle
Administrators must secure their accounts

The Arbitration Committee may require a new RfA if your account is compromised.

View additional information

Why have I received this message?
All administrators are receiving it.
What prompted you to send this message?
Recently, several Misplaced Pages admin accounts were compromised. The admin accounts were desysopped on an emergency basis. In the past, the Committee often resysopped admin accounts as a matter of course once the admin was back in control of their account. The committee has updated its guidelines. Admins may now be required to undergo a fresh Request for Adminship (RfA) after losing control of their account.
What do I need to do?
Only to follow the instructions in this message.
  1. Check that your password is unique (not reused across sites).
  2. Check that your password is strong (not simple or guessable).
  3. Enable Two-factor authentication (2FA), if you can, to create a second hurdle for attackers.
How can I find out more about two-factor authentication (2FA)?
You can find out more about 2FA at m:2FA.

This message was sent to all administrators following a recent motion. Thank you for your attention. For the Arbitration Committee, Cameron11598 02:28, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:03, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

Presidency Navigation Templates vs. Biography Navigation Templates discussion

Hello, HereToHelp! Since you are listed as an active member of the United States Presidents WikiProject, would you mind leaving a comment at a project talk page discussion about a series of templates that I created for the presidencies of Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, and George W. Bush? Another editor and myself disagree about whether there should be a separate navigation template for each Presidency apart from the biographical navigation template. Thanks! -- CommonKnowledgeCreator (talk) 21:45, 9 July 2024 (UTC)
