*:Had a look at use of CC-BY-ND-NC files on wikipedia which the Bank of Canada's restrictions approximate, and you're right wikipedia dislikes the use of such files, its still better than fair use which wikipedia does allow in my opinion, but thems the rules. However Bank of Canada's helpfulness means that an external link to their site fulfills about 85% of the need of having the pictures on the page, anyone who wants to see what the notes look like can just follow the link. The remaining need for an image for the page is for decoration, to make the page more intresting, which is not meant to be a valid reason for having a non free image. So reluctantly, unless ADH10 does manage to get official permission, I have to reluctantly concur with deleting all four.--] (]) 20:32, 13 May 2012 (UTC)
*:: The images are not to "decorate" the page. The images are to show the readers what these bills look like. If these images aren't in the Misplaced Pages article, it is quite doubtful that they will have any idea of what they resemble. As per the ], there are no free equivalents to this image, yet, pending reply from Bank of Canada. These images follow specifically rules 3b-10 of the NFCC, the only foreseeable problem there is with these images is criteria 3a. It is to my understanding that each of these images present significant information that cannot be replaced by one image, of one side, of one bill. A reader from a foreign country, who has never been to Canada, might be curious as to what their banknotes look like and only sees half of a bill and has no idea what the remainder of the bills look like. ----]]] ] 02:46, 14 May 2012 (UTC)

*::{{ec}} No, you're not allowed to have the one non-free image because the article really dosen't need it. Let me quote: "Non-free content is used only where no free equivalent is available, '''or could be created''', that would serve the same encyclopedic purpose." (my bold). * '''Delete''' Some people have misunderstood ]. You only need to prove that a free photo exists or that one can be created. For example, let's say that you are writing an article about a destroyed building. One of your sources has this statement: "For more information, see The Book by John Doe (1922) which also shows some photos of the building." Simple. Photos exist and the copyright has expired. Thus, the building has to be illustrated by free photos, since free photos exist. You don't have to locate "The Book" by John Doe yourself; someone else could do that and scan the photos. The following discussion is an archived debate of the proposed deletion of the media below. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page (such as the media's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the discussion was: Delete all as, per the previous closing, there are no policy based arguments in favour of keeping this collection of images. Article appears to have now a link for readers to follow and see the notes images- Peripitus (Talk) 09:33, 30 May 2012 (UTC)

Excessive use of non-free files. I guess one could be kept, irrelevant which one. Stefan2 (talk) 23:59, 21 April 2012 (UTC)

I strongly disagree. If you're going to delete these, might as well delete all of these as well. Australian_banknotes#Current_series_(polymer). --Addihockey10 06:54, 25 April 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for pointing out that article. A lot of files in that article need to be proposed for deletion. See also WP:OTHERTHINGSEXIST. --Stefan2 (talk) 09:15, 25 April 2012 (UTC)

Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion so a clearer consensus may be reached.
Please add new comments below this notice. Thanks, — ξ 05:05, 11 May 2012 (UTC)

i) the photographs are reproduced accurately and without alterations
ii) the Bank of Canada is identified as the source
iii) you do not imply that your particular use of the photographs is done in affiliation with, or with the endorsement of, the Bank of Canada.
which I think we can comply with.--KTo288 (talk) 16:03, 11 May 2012 (UTC)
  • Delete and don't replace with the Bank of Canada ones. The bank of Canada ones are restricted to non-commercial use and don't allow derivative works, so they are still unfree. Besides, it would still be excessive non-free use. --Stefan2 (talk) 17:23, 11 May 2012 (UTC)
Had a look at use of CC-BY-ND-NC files on wikipedia which the Bank of Canada's restrictions approximate, and you're right wikipedia dislikes the use of such files, its still better than fair use which wikipedia does allow in my opinion, but thems the rules. So reluctantly, unless ADH10 does manage to get official permission, I have to reluctantly concur with deleting all four.--KTo288 (talk) 20:32, 13 May 2012 (UTC)
The images are not to "decorate" the page. The images are to show the readers what these bills look like. If these images aren't in the Misplaced Pages article, it is quite doubtful that they will have any idea of what they resemble. As per the WP:NFCC, there are no free equivalents to this image, yet, pending reply from Bank of Canada. ----Addihockey10 02:46, 14 May 2012 (UTC)
    • WP:NFLIST has a solution for you: "Images that show multiple elements of the list at the same time, such as a cast shot or montage for a television show, are strongly preferred over individual images." --Stefan2 (talk) 14:45, 14 May 2012 (UTC)
  • The external link is discretely located in the external links section now, but it could be made more prominent-with a click here to see what the notes look like, having the external link fulfills most of the-people need to see what a note looks like- rationale.--KTo288 (talk) 14:40, 14 May 2012 (UTC)

I am not proposing the deletion of all uniform images. This particular image does not meet our NFCC. It is too high-quality. - Presidentman talk · contribs Random Picture of the Day (Talkback) 11:42, 12 May 2012 (UTC)
It's the same MSPaint low resolution I've been using on all 32 NFL teams since I took over in 2008. Nothing has changed in the past 4 years and the NFL and NFL Players Association has never had an issue with me making these. The Washington Redskins picture I created and uploaded is identical to the other 32 NFL uniforms. JohnnySeoul (talk) 14:21, 12 May 2012 (UTC)
The resolution is in no way low. See the recommendations at Category:Rescaled fairuse files more than 7 days old#Instructions:
  • "Raster images should generally be around 0.1 megapixels." This file is almost 5 times that recommendation.
  • "The largest dimension should be at most around 300–400px." Both dimensions are larger than 400 pixels.
  • "The resolution should approximately fit the intended use in the article." The file is used for displaying a 275x109 pixel image in an article.
Stefan2 (talk) 20:33, 13 May 2012 (UTC)
"Should" is used a lot. By definition, "should" does not mean it is mandatory. But either way, all 32 NFL uniform creations are low-resolution. JohnnySeoul (talk) 21:09, 14 May 2012 (UTC)

I don't agree with the replaceability statement in the FUR. Why can't you use US dollars, Russian roubles or something else instead? Stefan2 (talk) 14:39, 11 May 2012 (UTC)

  • I'm actually not bothered about whether it is kept here or not, if you follow the files history, you will see that it was originally uploaded here in 2007 and later moved to Commons, and I believe it has been used in the article in question since at least that time (though I haven't checked), I deleted it from Commons as an unfree image however, since it had been used here without previous objection, I thought I would do the editors of that article here the courtesy of returning to them their image.--KTo288 (talk) 14:54, 11 May 2012 (UTC)
  • Keep. The image is not replaceable because there is no free British replacement. - Presidentman talk · contribs Random Picture of the Day (Talkback) 23:31, 11 May 2012 (UTC)
  • How old is the crest? Seems to me it's old enough to be PD, regardless of the mintage of the coin in question. -Nard (Hablemonos)(Let's talk) 00:35, 12 May 2012 (UTC)
    • The crest is derived from the Royal coat of arms of the United Kingdom which according to the article here from 1837, however as the design on the coin is a derivative of it in use from 1988 to 1994, (the Forth bridge design is from 2004) crown copyright is for 50 years so even if you crop out the left hand coin the remaining image would not become free until 2038, feel free to try and argue PD and no threshold of originality if you wish, but I didn't feel this file was free enough for Commons and deleted it from there.--KTo288 (talk) 21:23, 13 May 2012 (UTC)

This is now an orphaned non-free image. I removed it from the article because it does not meet criteria #8 of the NFCC, our understanding of the show is not hurt at all by not having the image. Furthermore, since every other section has a free image, there's no validity to the claim that no free image could be found for this leg. Sven Manguard Wha? 20:11, 11 May 2012 (UTC)

  • Keep: It should have never been orphaned. It is being used to accompany text in the article that describes the content of one of the television episodes. There are apparently no free images depicting anything resembling the events, so this non-free one, of which it is only the second of two non-free images on the page, is utilizing it for. Sven removed it from the page without replacing it with a free alternative, of which none exists. There are perhaps free images of this building, which is the only other thing that happened in that episode, but it is not a free alternative to an image explicitly showing the events of the program.—Ryulong (竜龙) 20:43, 11 May 2012 (UTC)
  • Delete From Ryulong's argument, just because there presently doesn't exist a free image of any of the events from this leg, doesn't mean that we can't make one - all this stuff still exists in that leg, we just need some time and effort for someone to make a free image. --MASEM (t) 22:12, 11 May 2012 (UTC)
So just because there are free images representing the other events in the article that means we are not allowed to have one non-free image exactly depicting something from the show instead of just a vague photograph of a location? Because I certainly attempted to look for one of the cave on Flickr. However none of these are in a valid Creative Commons license. I'd rather there be an interesting non-free image on the page that qualifies for almost all of the non-free content criteria than one uninteresting free photo that doesn't tell the reader anything important. Sven did not even bother to find a replacement. He just removed it stating the article would not be harmed by its removal.—Ryulong (竜龙) 22:19, 11 May 2012 (UTC)
(edit conflict) No, you're not allowed to have the one non-free image because the article really dosen't need it. People seem to think that our non-free content policy says "look for a free image first, and if there isn't one, just toss in a non-free image". That's incorrect. That's close to what criteria 1 says, but even then it's overgenerous. Let me quote: "Non-free content is used only where no free equivalent is available, or could be created, that would serve the same encyclopedic purpose." (my bold). Additionally, you can't make a reasonable argument that I wouldn't be able to understand the show, or even understand the challenge, without seeing the image, so it fails criteria 8 as well. Again, to quote "Non-free content is used only if its presence would significantly increase readers' understanding of the topic, and its omission would be detrimental to that understanding." (again my bold). Sven Manguard Wha? 22:56, 11 May 2012 (UTC)
There is no free alternative to an event that took place as part of the program. Generic free photos are simply used in the place to not violate the minimal use criterion.—Ryulong (竜龙) 23:33, 11 May 2012 (UTC)
What would have happened if I had chosen a more specific photo of what happened, such as this one? Surely that is not as replaceable as Marcus Pollard abseiling down into a cave as it actively shows a contestant performing a unique task for which we cannot depict with free photos. Most of the arguments here are stating that there are other locations that free photos exist of to be used in place of the events of the task at the cave. Usually I am able to find free photos depicting things that happened. In this case I could not. Surely NFCC#8 is met seeing as a free photo cannot convey as much information as this non-free one.—Ryulong (竜龙) 00:39, 12 May 2012 (UTC)
Still no. There is no obligation for you to have an image in that slot, and neither photo conveys information that is critical to the understanding of the article and cannot be depicted in text. If you really, really want a photo to fill the slot, you could always email the producers. Sven Manguard Wha? 00:50, 12 May 2012 (UTC)
It certainly adds to the article to have a photograph, and there is no requirement in any policy that they all have to be free generic location photos like this one suggested below. Anyway, why is it that someone doing a more specific thing such as getting a particular item out of the cave does not convey any more information than someone going into the cave?—Ryulong (竜龙) 00:57, 12 May 2012 (UTC)
With the same rationale we do not need to have any fair use image. Your logic is flawed. -- A Certain White Cat 01:00, 12 May 2012 (UTC)
  • Keep: The picture shows "Marcus descends into the Goa Jomblang in Special Region of Yogyakarta as part of this Leg's Roadblock" which makes this is a historic event. Claim that a freely licensed version can be generated is preposterous since The Amazing Race 19 finale was 11 December 2011. That's air date not when the actual event had taken place. There is adequate text to accompany the image as well. -- A Certain White Cat 22:52, 11 May 2012 (UTC)
You could still get a free picture of the cave, and your keep votes ignores NFCC criteria 8. Sven Manguard Wha? 22:57, 11 May 2012 (UTC)
Cave isn't interesting to me. What is interesting is the event where the person is entering the cave. It does not look like an easy task. There is a big difference between taking the photo of Lincoln Memorial today and same object when Dr. King was giving his iconic speech. -- A Certain White Cat 00:46, 12 May 2012 (UTC)

Why does that one need to be chosen and why not an actual event from the show in the cave? It's something that happened and we have photos of and it serves a better purpose than just a photograph of the cave or a photograph of somewhere else they traveled to.—Ryulong (竜龙) 00:27, 12 May 2012 (UTC)
We need to choose that image because it is free. The image proposed for deletion is unfree. - Presidentman talk · contribs Random Picture of the Day (Talkback) 11:43, 12 May 2012 (UTC)
But they don't remotely show the same thing.—Ryulong (竜龙) 03:47, 13 May 2012 (UTC)
They might not show the same action, but both images relate to this particular leg. Therefore, the image above can be used to depict that leg. - Presidentman talk · contribs Random Picture of the Day (Talkback) 20:37, 13 May 2012 (UTC)
  • Delete Some people have misunderstood WP:NFCC#1. In this case, someone could take a photo of the cave, so the unfree photo is replaceable. --Stefan2 (talk) 16:05, 12 May 2012 (UTC)
It is not possible to recreate a photograph of a contestant abseiling down into this cave. Someone can go get a photo of the cave, yes, but the action of going down into the cave is not as reproducable.—Ryulong (竜龙) 19:40, 12 May 2012 (UTC)
  • Keep Images from TV shows are by definition non-free. The article does a very good job of using free images whenever possible but a few judicious non-free images are allowed by policy. -Nard (Hablemonos)(Let's talk) 17:21, 12 May 2012 (UTC)
  • Delete for failing NFCC Criteria 8. I don't think there is anything in that picture that could not be adequately described by text. The average reader can understand what descending into the cave means without the photo. The photo does not substantially improve the reader's understanding of the topic, there is no key information provided by the photo, instead it provides a nice illustration, but that is not enough to qualify under NFCC 8. Monty845 20:18, 13 May 2012 (UTC)
  • Reluctant delete. I often disagree with free-image purists (in the WP:VEGAN analogy, I would be the one pointing out that the true vegan dishes are inedible, and that the cows don't really care if we use their milk for butter). But the argument for keeping this image is apparently based on the premise that the article will be crucially damaged without an image that precisely depicts something that happened in this episode, and that's just not true as far as I can see.
