During the building of this school founder of Barisal Govt Brojmohon Collage late Brojmohon Dutt (first powerful Mufence of Patuakhali Mohakumar Magistrate) father of late Awshini Kumer Dutt, Nobin Chandra Shen father of Congress leader Shotindronath Shen, Umesh Chandra Dash father of leader Hiralal Dashgupta who is the former owner of the present building of Shonali Bank, local lawyer, Barrister and many other people played very important role. After their hard work in 1876 Akhwy Kumar De’s had given a place where they built a hut and first started the school named ‘Patuakhali Entrance School’ under the supervision of Magistrate Rosh Ranjan Pal as the Head Master of the school near present district post office.

Present school hostel and play ground had been used for cultivation. In 1887 former SDO Mr. Foez Uddin Hossain take lease this place for the school and he build an eight room one stored building with the help of government and money of local people. In 1887 on the day of Moharani Victoria’ Golden jubilee festival they shifted their school in that building from their old hut. On that day they named the school as ‘ Patuakhali High English School’ as the part of their school memorandum.

In 1912 former Indian government take over fifteen bigha of land near the school and hand over it to the education ministry to make it government school. When education ministry give order to the acting committee to leave the school under government supervision that time the school committee disagreed, thinking that if they do it then this school will loose the goodwill that it has, besides they took lease under one taka tax and built the present school building. In the period of India, this school earned fame as the idol school in a very short period of time. As a result in 1917 got donation from Calcutta University. At that time Pondikul Shiromoni Borda Kandoshen was the principal of the school. In 1931 the most brilliant student of the school Nobochandra Banarji takes the charge as principal. About 24 years he was in that position. In his time Bongo Shardul A. K. Fazlul huq and former education minister Sir M. Azizul Huq came for visit. In 1945 they started giving scholarship in every year 5 taka per month to that brilliant student who does top score in the examination of high primary in every Union to study in this school

In 1952 this school enlisted in Uplift Scheme. In 1962 it enlisted in Maltire Tarol Scheme. On 15th November, 1968 this school had been nationalized and name the school as ‘Patuakhali Govt Jubilee High school’ in government level.

Patuakhali Government Jubilee High School, established in 1887, is one of the oldest schools in Bangladesh. It is located in Patuakhali District.

History

Origins

In 1876, Axmoy Kumar Dey donated land for a school near the present district post office. There was established Patuakhali Entrance School, for students up to class eight.

At that time the present school location was farmland. In 1884, Sub Divisional Officer (SDO) Foyz Uddin Hossen allotted property for a more permanent structure, and constructed an eight-room, single storied building there. Instruction shifted to the new building on the occasion of the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1887, and the school took the name Patuakhali Jubilee High English School in remembrance of the event.

In 1912, the Indian government put the school under the authority of the Education Department. Calcutta University, which regulated and controlled secondary education in Bengal, recognized the school in 1917.

Nationalization

In 1952, the school enlisted in the Uplift Scheme. In 1962, it participated in the Multilateral Scheme. It took its current name when it was nationalized on 15 November 1968.

Present day

In January 2013, the school observed its 125th anniversary. Former alumni have held important positions in Bangladesh, including Minister Shahjahan Mia, Justice Mohammed Nizamul Huq and Additional Deputy Attorney General MK Rahman.
