Greetings, BMK! Sorry to read above that your Christmas didn't go so well. Considering that, this might be an annoying question... but can you help guide the Jingle Bells article towards GA status? If that is not possible, I will have to just go ahead with the nomination and rely fully on the reviewer's help, which might be an inconvenience given our mutual unfamiliarity with the topic. You have 242 edits to the page, making any participation from you highly valuable.-- '']]'' 20:51, 31 January 2024 (UTC)
:{{ping|MaranoFan}} Thanks for contacting me. Yes, I've contributed a fair amount to that article over the years, but I cannot hold myself out as any kind of expert on the subject. Considering that, and the fact that my level of participation on Misplaced Pages is very low right now -- almost random, in fact -- due to a variety of family crises, means that I'm going to have to turn down your invitation to participate in bringing the article to GA status. I do, however, wish you the best of luck with it, and I look forward to seeing the result of your efforts. Best, ] (]) 05:28, 1 February 2024 (UTC)

Hi, I edited "Horseshoe theory" just before you. The odd spacing in ''" Voilà, comme les extrêmes se rencontrent ! "'' is actually the original 19th-century typesetting, which I imitated. Is there a Misplaced Pages rule that typesetting has to be normalized to 21st-century standards?

Eventually, your reasoning won me over, and I've changed my view on this to more aligned with yours. Can you fill me in (again?) on your reasoning, and ideally, link me to some guidance? I have reverted your recent changes to the James Longstreet article. I have identified the following problems:
Your addition that Helen Dortch Longstreet was a journalist appears to be unsupported by either of the sources attached to that sentence.
Removing the separate section header and subheaders for the Bibliography was completely useless. The citations and the bibliography are two separate sections and should be presented as such. Your change makes it more difficult to edit the Bibliography, is in my view also less pleasant to read, and accomplishes nothing.
3 | |||
The article originally said that the election of Grover Cleveland to the presidency in 1884 “ended” Longstreet’s political career. You changed “ended” to “interrupted,” implying that Longstreet would someday resume involvement in politics. This is false. Longstreet never held public office again. I also found the language “return of a Democratic administration” to be confusing, as Cleveland had never been president before.
Your version of the "Later life" section contains numerous excessively short one-sentence “paragraphs.”
You made numerous edits which interrupted source to text integrity. Basically, you broke up paragraphs and added citations to new sources (mainly the Varon book) but did not adjust the page numbers in the original citations. As a general rule, it is usually not necessary to add sources if a sentence is already reliably sourced. But if you are going to do so, and you make edits in a way that moves the original citations elsewhere, then you need to make sure that those citations stay attached to the information that they are supposed to verify.
I will restore some copyedits that I made, and I welcome you to re-add citations to the Varon book. But do not break up paragraphs in ways that are unnecessary, especially when that disrupts the citations. I would appreciate if you would also take note of the other statements that I made. ] (]) 20:19, 8 August 2024 (UTC)

Jingle Bells
Greetings, BMK! Sorry to read above that your Christmas didn't go so well. Considering that, this might be an annoying question... but can you help guide the Jingle Bells article towards GA status? If that is not possible, I will have to just go ahead with the nomination and rely fully on the reviewer's help, which might be an inconvenience given our mutual unfamiliarity with the topic. You have 242 edits to the page, making any participation from you highly valuable.-- NØ 20:51, 31 January 2024 (UTC)
- @MaranoFan: Thanks for contacting me. Best, Beyond My Ken (talk) 05:28, 1 February 2024 (UTC)

Horseshoe Theory
Hi, I edited "Horseshoe theory" just before you. The odd spacing in " Voilà, comme les extrêmes se rencontrent ! " is actually the original 19th-century typesetting, which I imitated. Is there a Misplaced Pages rule that typesetting has to be normalized to 21st-century standards?
I'm not intending to revert it or anything, just curious. ScarletPlanet (talk) 20:47, 18 February 2024 (UTC)
- I wouldn't say that there is a rule, per se, but our primary concern should be communicating with our readers, and using contemporary formatting makes things easier for them. Beyond My Ken (talk) 17:25, 25 February 2024 (UTC)

New Pages Patrol newsletter April 2024
Hello Beyond My Ken,
Backlog update: The October drive reduced the article backlog from 11,626 to 7,609 and the redirect backlog from 16,985 to 6,431! Congratulations to Schminnte, who led with over 2,300 points.
Following that, New Page Patrol organized another backlog drive for articles in January 2024. The January drive started with 13,650 articles and reduced the backlog to 7,430 articles. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 1,340 points in this drive.
Looking at the graph, it seems like backlog drives are one of the only things keeping the backlog under control. Another backlog drive is being planned for May. Feel free to participate in the May backlog drive planning discussion.
It's worth noting that both queues are gradually increasing again and are nearing 14,034 articles and 22,540 redirects. We encourage you to keep contributing, even if it's just a single patrol per day. Your support is greatly appreciated!
2023 Awards
Onel5969 won the 2023 cup with 17,761 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 50/day. There was one Platinum Award (10,000+ reviews), 2 Gold Awards (5000+ reviews), 6 Silver (2000+), 8 Bronze (1000+), 30 Iron (360+) and 70 more for the 100+ barnstar. Hey man im josh led on redirect reviews by clearing 36,175 of them. For the full details, see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone for their efforts in reviewing!
WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers deployed the rewritten NewPagesFeed in October, and then gave the NewPagesFeed a slight visual facelift in November. This concludes most major work to Special:NewPagesFeed, and most major work by the WMF Moderator Tools team, who wrapped up their major work on PageTriage in October. The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers will continue small work on PageTriage as time permits.
Recruitment: A couple of the coordinators have been inviting editors to become reviewers, via mass-messages to their talk pages. If you know someone who you'd think would make a good reviewer, then a personal invitation to them would be great. Additionally, if there are Wikiprojects that you are active on, then you can add a post there asking participants to join NPP. Please be careful not to double invite folks that have already been invited.
Reviewing tip: Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages within their most familiar subjects can use the regularly updated NPP Browser tool.
Reminders:
- You can access live chat with patrollers on the New Pages Patrol Discord.
- Consider adding the project discussion page to your watchlist.

A childhood friend from the 80s died today, rather than sleeping I've distracted myself via wikipedia. While initialling perusing https://en.wikipedia.org/Molecular_recognition I somehow ended up down the rabbit hole of James Watson's scientific racism, where a few editors have a habit of removing any criticism even when well sourced, doing the same for other like minded bigots. Remind me about this?
Hi BMK, long time. I see you commenting at various pages on my way-too-long watchlist, but one way or another, we haven't interacted for a while; I hope all is well with you. I remember something many moons ago where I came around to your way of seeing things regarding placement of maintenance templates, after starting out in opposition. I don't have much recollection anymore about the details, but the bottom line was that either I placed a maint. template on a page or someone else did, and then you removed it, saying (I think) that it didn't have consensus, or something similar. At first, I was bent out of shape, thinking anybody could place a template on their own say so, and someone else shouldn't remove it based on WP:WTRMT. Eventually, your reasoning won me over, and I've changed my view on this to more aligned with yours. Can you fill me in (again?) on your reasoning, and ideally, link me to some guidance? I find myself on the other side of the fence now, removing a MT placed by someone else, and it would be nice to recall what it is you said that persuaded me. Does this ring a bell at all? Thanks, and hope you are well. Mathglot (talk) 07:55, 22 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Mathglot: Sorry to take so long to respond to this. I vaguely recall the discussion you're referring to, but not enough to recall where and when it took place. There are a few older comments on my "Thoughts" page which may trigger your memory. In particular, this discussion from 2008 may be useful.Incidentally, I haven't changed my views in the 16 years since then, although I'm less inclined to make an issue out of it, unfortunately because the Misplaced Pages community's inherent intransigence and lack of interest in change often doesn't lend itself to consideration of how the project would benefit from small evolutionary adjustments; it seems that people would rather stick to communal authoritarianism instead. File:300 & 302 Canal Street.jpg
Many, many years ago you uploaded an image of some loft buildings on Canal Street, with some notes about their history and architecture. It came in handy for an article I was working on, so I thought I might return the favor with a fun fact about its later history. The building on the left was the subject of a very famous experimental film called Wavelength, which uses as one of its main visual elements the building's tall, mullioned windows. hinnk (talk) 22:04, 28 July 2024 (UTC)
- That's very interesting - I have an LP by Michael Snow in my collection, Music for Piano, Whistling, Mic & Tape Recorder, which I haven't listened to in years.Do you have a source that verifies that 300 Canal is the building used for the film? I'd like to add that information to the photo's file, but I generally like to have a source to cite. Beyond My Ken (talk) 04:03, 1 August 2024 (UTC)

James Longstreet
I have reverted your recent changes to the James Longstreet article. I have identified the following problems:
Your addition that Helen Dortch Longstreet was a journalist appears to be unsupported by either of the sources attached to that sentence.
Removing the separate section header and subheaders for the Bibliography was completely useless. The citations and the bibliography are two separate sections and should be presented as such. Your change makes it more difficult to edit the Bibliography, is in my view also less pleasant to read, and accomplishes nothing. 3 The article originally said that the election of Grover Cleveland to the presidency in 1884 “ended” Longstreet’s political career.
Display name 99 (talk) 20:19, 8 August 2024 (UTC)
- I will be restoring my edits, as the information is sourced to the Varon book, which you should read before making any additional reversions. Beyond My Ken (talk) 21:51, 8 August 2024 (UTC)
- The Bibliography is still totally editable in the "References: section. This style is frequently used on Misplaced Pages, and is not forbidden by the MOS. Beyond My Ken (talk) 22:01, 8 August 2024 (UTC)
- Please do presume to lecture me on how to edit Misplaced Pages. I've been editing for 19 years and over 60,000 edits and am well aware of how to edit. Your objections to format and style are noted and rejected as irrelevant. Beyond My Ken (talk) 22:01, 8 August 2024 (UTC)
- One can be a public figure without holding public office. Longstreet continued to try to achieve office almost continually after he stepped down as Marshall, so his political cafreer was not "ended". That is why the article already said that he went into "semi-retirement", not "retirement". Beyond My Ken (talk) 22:01, 8 August 2024 (UTC)
- Please be cognizant of the dangers of WP:OWNERSHIP of articles. I mention this because I see indications of ownership-type behavior in your message above. If it remains empty for seven days or more, it may be deleted under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and removing the speedy deletion tag. Liz 17:01, 21 August 2024 (UTC)

Hello! Voting in the 2024 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 2 December 2024. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Misplaced Pages arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
