'''Mahato''' ({{lang-bn|মাহাতো}})is a surname mostly used by the "Kurmi" caste people of Jharkhand and West Bengal. The Kurmi's are mostly agriculturalists people with land and know indigenous irrigation techniques, with very few landless agricultural labourers among them. The governments of ] and ] both have classified the Kurmis under Other Backward Classes since 1994.Earlier "Mahato's" was considered as a single community clsssified as Schedule Tribe in the INDIAN gazette of 1932 but with a mass movement and support from Hindu Mahasava, Kurmi and Koiri's had established themselves as general cast(Kshatriya). Based on socioeconomic condition Mandal Commission proposed Kurmi's and Koiries as OBC.The surname "Mahato" is used by some other castes. eg-Koeri (Jharkhand, Bihar), Nunia (Bihar, West Bengal), Bedia (West Bengal), Bhumij (West Bengal), Oraon(jharkhand). "Mahato's" of Orissa is using "Mahanta" as their surname again which is synnonimus to the sunmame "Mohanta" used by "Napit" community in Dinajpur area of West Bengal. Though many people even the surname holders consider mahato's as a single caste which is not having any proper basis.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.anagrasarkalyan.gov.in/htm/obc_list.html |title=Government of West Bengal: List of Other Backward Classes |publisher=Govt. of West Bengal |date= |accessdate=December 23, 2011}}</ref>
