After early spells with Everton and Stockport Bentley moved to non-league side Telford United. In a 14-year stay Bentley scored 431 goals in 835 appearances.
Bentley, born in ], played outside right and started his career at ] making only one league appearance in the 1960/61 season. He moved to ] for the 61/62 season and made 49 appearances over the next two years, scoring 5 goals. In 1963 he moved to ] (known at the time as ]), where he enjoyed an immensely successful 14 years, scoring 431 goals in 835 appearances.

He died in May 2007 after a short illness.
