Thanks for posting your research. I've developed quite an interest in this subject, ever since seeing a ''chapeau chinois'' in a Legion band. The Turkish connection is particularly hard to track down, since so few people, relatively speaking, understand Turkish. :We DO have a lot of things in common. I'm W3BOA, but I haven't been on the air since the 1960s. When I left the ship, I spend a day on ], off Puerto Rico, and operated some sort of ham station there. Totally by accident I had a QSO from there with famous ham ]. My only real connection with Turkey is a two-day visit to Izmir in 1964 when I was on a Med Cruise. I'm on Skype, also, as lsander153. ::{{ping|Serten}} {{ping|Wikicology}} I apologise. I will also apologise to ] at his page in case he was offended. I have been here at enWiki since March 2008; a fair time, but I am not technically skilled (in this HTML ? stuff, or what ever it is I am doing now) or well versed in Wiki protocol etc. I only discovered the "Ping User" feature a few days ago (August 2014).
::I went to ] but could not find any rule forbidding other language use within ''user talk pages''. I did see guidelines for "use English" in ''article talk/discussion pages''. As I understand (?), this does not cover ''user pages/user talk pages''. I went next to section 3 of same page entitled "User talk pages" and found nothing, Next I went to ] and found (?) nothing. ''Please clarify''.
::I reckoned other language use was OK since I have seen it in other ''user talk pages''. I know it is not used, or at least not used without a translation, in ''article talk/discussion pages''. Please also see here: English is used extensively (albeit with apologies), which baffles me. I do know I can use the lousy translator here, and can seek 3rd Party or Misplaced Pages Embassy help.
::I only met ] recently (August 2014) in enWiki when he posted here. English is my primary language but I also know my ancestral languages.
::He is from ''The Old Country'' so we have a bond of comradeship and naturally we would enjoy communicating in ''"any dialect, except High German"''. This also allows us to practise our lingual skills. I have also seen examples of several other editors communicating in other vernaculars on ''user talk/discussion pages'' here in enWiki. I do concede this ''may'' violate a Wiki-Policy as well. I know some are sensitive to the language issue, I am not, even if I do not know what is being said. I have even met a few people who refused to speak their native language, even though I spoke it ! Be assured Serten and I were not talking about you, but about a Wiki-translation.
::I wish to thank you for being civil. The last time I encountered this situation in enWiki it offended me greatly. Editor "A" told Editor "B" to "speak English" on Editor "B"s ''user talk page''. I was offended even though I do not know editors A & B. I do not share the nationality of editor A nor the race of editor B. I will happily and discreetly send you links to this page via Wiki-email should you wish. I have the dealt with ''The Ugly American'' overseas a bit who wondered why the natives spoke no English, it was embarrassing. Since I spoke a bit of the lingo I was not ugly however...but not really good looking either...well... I was buying...OK... I went native...but not unlike el-Lawrence of Arabia !

Hi. I was wondering if you'd be interested in setting up ], based on ] and ]. Now it's not a contest in itself, it's designed to motivate people to inspire others to improve content and build something which demonstrates the hard work going into the country which is visible. The focus is more on quality improvements but new articles are welcome too. Eventually a Turkish National Contest could be created to fuel it, like ], in which contestants can choose to keep the Amazon vouchers themselves to buy their own books for more articles or put them into book fund to help editors further improve Turkish-related topics by giving them the books they want. It will begin though as purely an improvement drive. If interested, or you think anybody else might be interested, alert them and sign up on the ] talk page at the bottom. Hi. The ] has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland ] and ]. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like South East Asia, Japan/China or India etc, much like ]. For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. At some stage we hope to run some contests to benefit Asian content, a destubathon perhaps, aimed at reducing the stub count would be a good place to start, based on the current ] which has produced near 200 articles in just three days. If you would like to see this happening for Asia, and see potential in this attracting more interest and editors for the country/countries you work on please sign up and being contributing to the challenge! This is a way we can target every country of Asia, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant! Welcome!
Hello, Tjlynnjr, and welcome to Misplaced Pages! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Regarding USCGC_Northwind_(WAGB-282)'s references
I have removed the list of references at the end since they weren't actually referencing anything in the article. If there is something that can be referenced by those sources, use them following the WP:CITE syntax. I have included the references I removed in the article's talk page for easy retrieval and convenience. ScottSteiner (talk) 11:05, 19 March 2011 (UTC)
- To cite things, you should read the article at WP:CITE. It's a great help. It'll show you how to cite http://www.uscg.mil/history/webcutters/Northwind1945.asp you would do something along the lines of
- <ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.uscg.mil/history/webcutters/Northwind1945.asp|title=U.S. Coast Guard Cutter History|accessdate=2011-03-19}}</ref>
- Which would produce: after the fact you are citing the source for. You could then place that after relevant information which should be sourced. From looking at the website, you would do that for the builder/cost/yard number/other info provided (but just once, not for each set of data). ScottSteiner (talk) 11:49, 19 March 2011 (UTC)
- "U.S. Coast Guard Cutter History". Retrieved 2011-03-19.
Your edits of USCGC Fir (WLM-212)
Your recent edits of USCGC Fir (WLM-212) are appreciated. Regardless of how much I look at an article, I always miss something and your sharp eyes caught somethings I managed to overlook. A big Coast Guard welcome to Misplaced Pages from this retired chief petty officer. Cheers and have fun. Your contributions are valued. If you have questions, just ask. Cuprum17 (talk) 03:48, 8 April 2011 (UTC)
- Hi Chief, If I knew your were stopping by I would have baked you a pie. I happy to find out somebody is still alive. My refences to Fir as WLB were the result of confusion. I knew full well she was WLM. Confusion came from writing on Tupelo and Magnolia. I am very new at this. My only qualifications might be "Master of Assorted Facts" and "Sea Story Teller". I eyeballed your page and see we share many affinities...even I was once a high powered SP5. Thank you for your comments and invitation to ask questions IAW the finest CG traditions....."Hey Boats...how do we do this ? " "Hell...I dunno...let's ask the Chief". From the Ancient, Honourable and Mystical Polar Order of the Charlie Noble we send you greetings. Semper Paratus (CS1) Tjlynnjr (talk) 21:16, 9 April 2011 (UTC).
- I do love a good sea story. And another 'Ancient order of the Spec 5' to boot. What are the odds on that one? No kidding, there are plenty of Coast Guard articles on here that could use some help. Many of the cutter articles are incomplete and need some references. Although I was in the Army in Vietnam, I'm attempting to get down the story of the Coast Guard in Vietnam little by little. As I said before, if you need help, contact me on my talk page and I'll see what I can do to teach you the ropes. Did I understand your rate right? Commissaryman? or did I miss something? Did you have time on an Ice Braker? All my CG time was ATON on river tenders...once you get stuck there it's hard to leave. Cheers... Cuprum17 (talk) 23:04, 9 April 2011 (UTC)
- We are a Coast Guard family since 1957, Chief. After WW II and Korean war service (FN to MM1) (USN) Dad was in Base Buffalo NY, CGC Winnebago, Base Sand Island Hono. TH, Magnolia, Base YBI SF CA, CGC Northwind, CGC Fir and CGC Tupelo MM1 to CWO3 (Eng). Yes.....I was a belly robber...otherwise I would not have been initiated into the mysteries of Charlie Noble...do not tell anyone though, since there are more conspiracy theories about it than the Illuminati. The Commissaryman rate went to MS to FS and back to CS ("Culinary Specialist")....very sophisitcated ;) No ice service, but I have eyeballed some breakers, and I know it's nice in the ice. Well, ATON is still hard work, Dad enjoyed it though. Please see my user page, click on the link to K7IWH. If you know any hams, especially Ancient Canoe Clubbers, tell them about my station. My primary army MOS was 94B3L. I will contact you on your talk page when I have a question. BTW Dad was Chief Engineer in Fir from 1969 to 1970. He also swore me into active duty in Seattle WA while Tupelo was in Todd Shipyards in 1971. Wishing you fair winds and following seas, TJ Tjlynnjr (talk) 23:58, 9 April 2011 (UTC).

Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to USCGC Tupelo (WLB-303) may have broken the syntax by modifying 1 "()"s. If you have, don't worry, just edit the page again to fix it. If I misunderstood what happened, or if you have any questions, you can leave a message on my operator's talk page.

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Misplaced Pages appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited USCGC Tupelo (WLB-303), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Pacific Theater (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Thank you
Thank you very much. I have watched you plugging away, you improve articles. You are the local expert, but not bossy, you don’t act like you own the subject. You asked for input, I thought I’d give you support, you deserve it. The post is very flattering, but personal stuff is uncomfortable around here, different ways. Please do not be offended, but I’m going to blank the page, let the bots have it. Again, thank you very much, and you are doing a great job. See you around, I’m sure. Turkish crescent
Thanks for posting your research. I've developed quite an interest in this subject, ever since seeing a chapeau chinois in a Legion band. The Turkish connection is particularly hard to track down, since so few people, relatively speaking, understand Turkish. It looks as though you can be a key to getting some of that stuff. Lou Sander (talk) 17:41, 13 March 2014 (UTC)
- We DO have a lot of things in common. I'm W3BOA, but I haven't been on the air since the 1960s. I was a pioneering Navy shipboard ham, operating from USS Rankin (AKA-103) around 1962, when shipboard operation was first authorized. When I left the ship, I spend a day on Vieques Island, off Puerto Rico, and operated some sort of ham station there. Totally by accident I had a QSO from there with famous ham Barry Goldwater. My only real connection with Turkey is a two-day visit to Izmir in 1964 when I was on a Med Cruise. I'm on Skype, also, as lsander153. Maybe we could use it for a semi-eyeball QSO. Welcome to MILHIST
Hello and welcome to the Military history WikiProject! As you may have guessed, we're a group of editors working to improve Misplaced Pages's coverage of topics related to military history.
A few features that you might find helpful:
- Our navigation box points to most of the useful pages within the project.
- The announcement and open task box is updated very frequently. You can watchlist it if you are interested, or you can add it directly to your user page by copying the following: {{WPMILHIST Announcements}}.
- Important discussions take place on the project's main discussion page; it is highly recommended that you watchlist it.
- The project has several departments, which handle article quality assessment, detailed article and content review, writing contests, and article logistics.

Wikinic in Seattle
Hi Tjlynnjr! I'm a native Washingtonian (from Mount Vernon) that currently does Wiki stuff in New York and with Wikimedia NYC. I will be in Seattle for the Wikinic and am looking forward to meeting some Seattle Wikipedians. I hope to talk to you more about Seattle Misplaced Pages activities at the meetup as I am very interested in the proposed Wikimedia Cascadia Usergroup! If you want to sign on as a founding member of Wikimedia Cascadia (or whatever we will call it!) go to meta:Talk:Cascadia Wikimedians#Sign on to be a Founding Member of Cascadia Wikimedians and contribute to the discussion. Disambiguation link notification for June 22
Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Misplaced Pages appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Mustafa Fehmi Kubilay, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Kozan (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject. Thanks for the kind words. I haven't done any work there for a while. I need to take another crack at putting the rest of the names into a table. I have an excel template that helps but still a fair amount of work Gbawden (talk) 18:04, 1 July 2014 (UTC)

This seems to be an absolutely First Class operation. Their stuff is very well written in English, and I imagine in Turkish and German as well. Their people seem to know all there is to know about Turkish music and instruments. I'm planning to get in touch with their U.S. office (Washington and/or Boston), and see if they can put me/us in touch with a fluent English-speaker who knows about mehter, standards, music, etc. Lou Sander (talk) 00:50, 2 August 2014 (UTC)

I noticed that you have posted comments to the page User talk:Serten in a language other than English. When on the English-language Misplaced Pages, please always use English, no matter to whom you address your comments. This is so that comments may be comprehensible to the community at large. If the use of another language is unavoidable, please provide a translation of the comments. For more details, see Misplaced Pages:Talk page guidelines. Thank you. . Wikicology (talk) 07:41, 31 August 2014 (UTC)
- Were trying to translate things for the English WP ;) Serten (talk) 12:29, 31 August 2014 (UTC)
- @Serten: @Wikicology: I apologise. I will also apologise to User:Serten at his page in case he was offended. I have been here at enWiki since March 2008; a fair time, but I am not technically skilled (in this HTML ? stuff, or what ever it is I am doing now) or well versed in Wiki protocol etc. I only discovered the "Ping User" feature a few days ago (August 2014).
- I went to Misplaced Pages:Talk page guidelines but could not find any rule forbidding other language use within user talk pages. I did see guidelines for "use English" in article talk/discussion pages. As I understand (?), this does not cover user pages/user talk pages. I went next to section 3 of same page entitled "User talk pages" and found nothing, Next I went to Misplaced Pages:User pages and found (?) nothing. Please clarify.
- I reckoned other language use was OK since I have seen it in other user talk pages. I know it is not used, or at least not used without a translation, in article talk/discussion pages. Please also see here: English is used extensively (albeit with apologies), which baffles me. I do know I can use the lousy translator here, and can seek 3rd Party or Misplaced Pages Embassy help.
- I only met User:Serten recently (August 2014) in enWiki when he posted here. English is my primary language but I also know my ancestral languages.
- He is from The Old Country so we have a bond of comradeship and naturally we would enjoy communicating in "any dialect, except High German". This also allows us to practise our lingual skills. I have also seen examples of several other editors communicating in other vernaculars on user talk/discussion pages here in enWiki. I do concede this may violate a Wiki-Policy as well. I know some are sensitive to the language issue, I am not, even if I do not know what is being said. I have even met a few people who refused to speak their native language, even though I spoke it ! Be assured Serten and I were not talking about you, but about a Wiki-translation.
- I wish to thank you for being civil. The last time I encountered this situation in enWiki it offended me greatly. Editor "A" told Editor "B" to "speak English" on Editor "B"s user talk page. I was offended even though I do not know editors A & B. I do not share the nationality of editor A nor the race of editor B. I will happily and discreetly send you links to this page via Wiki-email should you wish. I have the dealt with The Ugly American overseas a bit who wondered why the natives spoke no English, it was embarrassing. Since I spoke a bit of the lingo I was not ugly however...but not really good looking either...well... I was buying...OK... I went native...but not unlike el-Lawrence of Arabia !

Weather update for Wiknic
Hi, weather update for Wiknic: the forecast is now for 91 degrees and a high UV index. Peaceray is bringing icewater, but everyone do please take appropriate precautions for the weather, such as sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, and staying hydrated. There will be some shade in the trees. It's ok for those of us who are more temperature and/or sunlight sensitive to come but leave early, or skip the event if you think that you should; people who are very young, elderly, or have other health issues are more vulnerable to heat stroke. Health and safety first. Cheers, --Pine 15:07, 2 July 2015 (UTC)

ArbCom elections are now open!
Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Misplaced Pages arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Misplaced Pages:The 1000 Challenge (Turkey)
Hi. I was wondering if you'd be interested in setting up Misplaced Pages:The 1000 Challenge (Turkey), based on Misplaced Pages:The 10,000 Challenge and Misplaced Pages:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). Now it's not a contest in itself, it's designed to motivate people to inspire others to improve content and build something which demonstrates the hard work going into the country which is visible. The focus is more on quality improvements but new articles are welcome too. Eventually a Turkish National Contest could be created to fuel it, like Misplaced Pages:Awaken the Dragon, in which contestants can choose to keep the Amazon vouchers themselves to buy their own books for more articles or put them into book fund to help editors further improve Turkish-related topics by giving them the books they want. It will begin though as purely an improvement drive. If interested, or you think anybody else might be interested, alert them and sign up on the Misplaced Pages talk:WikiProject Turkey talk page at the bottom. Thank you. --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 14:12, 19 September 2016 (UTC)
Asian 10,000 Challenge invite
Hi. The Misplaced Pages:WikiProject Asia/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Misplaced Pages:The 10,000 Challenge and Misplaced Pages:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like South East Asia, Japan/China or India etc, much like Misplaced Pages:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. At some stage we hope to run some contests to benefit Asian content, a destubathon perhaps, aimed at reducing the stub count would be a good place to start, based on the current Misplaced Pages:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon which has produced near 200 articles in just three days. Thank you. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoLo dicono a Signa. 04:47, 21 October 2016 (UTC)
Europe 10,000 Challenge invite
Hi. The Misplaced Pages:WikiProject Europe/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Misplaced Pages:The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like Germany, Italy, the Benelux countries, Iberian Peninsula, Romania, Slovenia etc, much like Misplaced Pages:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. If you would like to see masses of articles being improved for Europe and your specialist country like Misplaced Pages:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon, sign up today and once the challenge starts a contest can be organized. This is a way we can target every country of Europe, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant and also sign under any country sub challenge on the page that you might contribute to! Thank you. --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 21:09, 7 November 2016 (UTC)

March Madness 2017

2017 Military Historian of the Year and Newcomer of the Year nominations and voting
As we approach the end of the year, the Military History project is looking to recognise editors who have made a real difference. Each year we do this by bestowing two awards: the Military Historian of the Year and the Military History Newcomer of the Year. The co-ordinators invite all project members to get involved by nominating any editor they feel merits recognition for their contributions to the project. Nominations for both awards are open between 00:01 on 2 December 2017 and 23:59 on 15 December 2017. After this, a 14-day voting period will follow commencing at 00:01 on 16 December 2017. User group for Military Historians
Greetings,
"Military history" is one of the most important subjects when speak of sum of all human knowledge. To support contributors interested in the area over various language Wikipedias, we intend to form a user group. It also provides a platform to share the best practices between military historians, and various military related projects on Wikipedias. An initial discussion was has been done between the coordinators and members of WikiProject Military History on English Misplaced Pages. Now this discussion has been taken to Meta-Wiki. Contributors intrested in the area of military history are requested to share their feedback and give suggestions at Talk:Discussion to incubate a user group for Misplaced Pages Military Historians.

April 2018 Milhist Backlog Drive
G'day all, please be advised that throughout April 2018 the Military history Wikiproject is running its annual backlog elimination drive. This will focus on several key areas:
- tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
- adding or improving listed resources on Milhist's task force pages
- updating the open tasks template on Milhist's task force pages
- creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various lists of missing articles.
As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.
The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the scope of military history will be considered eligible. This year, the Military history project would like to extend a specific welcome to members of Misplaced Pages:WikiProject Women in Red, and we would like to encourage all participants to consider working on helping to improve our coverage of women in the military. This is not the sole focus of the edit-a-thon, though, and there are aspects that hopefully will appeal to pretty much everyone.
The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 April and runs until 23:59 UTC on 30 April 2018. Those interested in participating can sign up here.

Trying to get WikiProject Amateur Radio back on the air!
Hi, I'm Dr vulpes and I'm currently doing my best to resurrect the amateur radio WikiProject. A lot of the articles need some serious work and so I'm trying to organize an article improvement drive in October. If you're interested check out the link to the drive and the project page. Right now everything is in the planning stages, trying to find people interested, articles to focus on, etc. So if you know anyone who would like to help out feel free to invite them! If you no longer interested in this project that's a-ok just remove yourself from the list on the project page and I'll never badger you again. 73! Dr vulpes 00:03, 15 September 2022 (UTC)
