The aim of the task force is to identify gender bias on Misplaced Pages (including gender bias in articles, the selection of articles maintained, discussions, editor interactions, policies and implementation of policies), take steps to counter it, and raise awareness of how the ] can affect editorial and other decisions.

Issues that discourage women from editing include a perception of Misplaced Pages as sexist; a lack of confidence and spare time; problems with the editing interface; the belief that editing is tedious; unease because of the inclusion of pornography; and fewer opportunities to develop social relationships than on other websites.<ref name=Stoeffel/><ref name=Gardner19February2011>{{cite web | last = Gardner | first =Sue | author-link = Sue Gardner | title = Nine reasons women don't edit Misplaced Pages (in their own words) | url = http://suegardner.org/2011/02/19/nine-reasons-why-women-dont-edit-wikipedia-in-their-own-words/ | website = suegardner.org | date = 19 February 2011 }}</ref><ref>{{cite news | last = Staff writer | title = Misplaced Pages 'completely failed' to fix gender imbalance | url = http://www.bbc.com/news/business-28701772 | work = ] | publisher = ] | date = 8 August 2014 }}</ref> Despite significant evidence to the contrary, certain commentators have denied that the gender gap is a problem, citing efforts to highlight it as "feminist ideology."<ref>{{Cite journal | last1 = Eckert | first1 = Stine | last2 = Steiner | first2 = Linda | author-link2 = Linda Steiner | title = (Re)triggering backlash: responses to news about Misplaced Pages’s gender gap | journal = ] | volume = 37 | issue = 4 | pages = 284-303 | doi = 10.1177/0196859913505618 | date = October 2013 | url = http://dx.doi.org/10.1177/0196859913505618}}</ref>
As ] notes, a 2011 Wikimedia Foundation survey found that 8.5 percent of editors were women.<ref>, Wikimedia Foundation, accessed 7 January 2011.</ref> The gender gap has not been closing and, on average, female editors leave Misplaced Pages earlier than male editors. Research suggests that the gender gap has a detrimental effect on content coverage. Articles of particular interest to women tend to be shorter,<ref name="clubhouse">Shyong (Tony) K. Lam, et al, , ''WikiSym’11'', 3–5 October 2011.</ref> and women typically perceive Misplaced Pages to be of lower quality than men do.<ref>S. Lim and N. ==Article selection based on gender bias==
{{main|Gender imbalance on Misplaced Pages}}
Misplaced Pages has a longstanding controversy concerning gender bias and sexism which has been associated with the selection of articles which are maintained in the open-source encyclopedia.<ref name="nytimes">{{cite news|last=Cassell|first=Justine|title=Editing Wars Behind the Scenes|url=http://www.nytimes.com/roomfordebate/2011/02/02/where-are-the-women-in-wikipedia/a-culture-of-editing-wars|newspaper=New York Times|date=February 4, 2011}}</ref><ref name="nytimes_a">Noam Cohen, ''The New York Times''. An article in ''The New York Times'' cites a Wikimedia Foundation study which found that fewer than 13% of contributors to Misplaced Pages are women. ], previously executive director of the foundation, said that increasing diversity was about making the encyclopedia "as good as it could be." She previously had set a policy goal for increasing enrollment to 25% by 2015. She has discussed the goal of recruiting 25% administrators in the near term and eventually towards 50%.<ref name="nytimes_a"/>

Factors the article cited as possibly discouraging women from editing included the "obsessive fact-loving realm," associations with the "hard-driving hacker crowd," and the necessity to be "open to very difficult, high-conflict people, even misogynists."<ref name="nytimes_a" />

Welcome to the gender gap task force (GGTF), one of the task forces of WikiProject Countering systemic bias. The GGTF was started in 2013 to address some of the problems women face on Misplaced Pages, whether as editors or article subjects. If you'd like to help, please add your name to the list of participants.

According to New York Magazine in 2014, "Misplaced Pages famously bears one of the starkest gender gaps in contemporary culture." Misplaced Pages "shares many characteristics with the hard-driving hacker crowd", according to Joseph Reagle of Harvard's Berkman Center for Internet and Society, and is "open to very difficult, high-conflict people, even misogynists". Estimates of Wikipedians who are female have ranged from 8.5 in 2011 to 16.1 percent in 2013.

Issues that discourage women from editing include a perception of Misplaced Pages as sexist; a lack of confidence and spare time; problems with the editing interface; the belief that editing is tedious; unease because of the inclusion of pornography; and fewer opportunities to develop social relationships than on other websites. Despite significant evidence to the contrary, certain commentators have denied that the gender gap is a problem, citing efforts to highlight it as "feminist ideology."
