Ahmed Hassan Imran is a well known Bengali Journalist. Like the popular Malayalam daily Madhyamam from Muslim community in Kerala, the Bangla daily Qalam has too consolidated its foothold under his stewardship in West Bengal. Started 30 years ago as a monthly, turned into a weekly after some years, Qalam has emerged as the best and the most popular daily since 2012 with a large circulation in the Bengali community. Due to his popularity and successful venture of the Bangla daily, he was nominated a Member of Rajya Sabha by All India Trinamool Congress in 2014.
== Career ==
According to the report of the Ministry of External Affairs, in 1975-76 Imran founded West Bengal Muslim Students Association.<ref name="abp12092014jagannath"/> The organization rapidly spread through the state. On 24 April 1977, Imran co-founded the ] in ] in ]. Imran became the president of the West Bengal unit of the organization and held the position till 1980.<ref name="abp12092014jagannath"/> Even after relinquishing the position, Imran remained the primary organizer and spokesperson of the organization till it was banned in 2001. He setup the office of SIMI in a two room apartment in 19, Dargah Road in the Park Circus area of Kolkata. In 1981, he started publishing ] as the monthly ] mouthpiece of ]. ] continued to be published as a monthly till 1994. During his period SIMI spread throughout the length and breadth of West Bengal.<ref name="abp12092014jagannath"/>


Born in the Mal police station area of Jalpaiguri district, he obtained his education from his native place. Since his student days, he remained active among students and youth and earned a reputation of a popular leader in Bengali community. It is a fact that there was no dearth of efforts for a Bangla newspaper from the Bengali Muslim community since even before Independence, but his Qalam, evolved from a monthly into a daily, fulfilled the long due need of the community.
As a result Imran became popular in the Islamist circles of the Middle East. He was appointed as the board member of the Jeddah based ] to oversee the affairs of the eastern zone. Mamul al Azam, who is the Managing Director of Islamic Development Bank, is the son of Ghulam Azam, a convicted war criminal of Bangladesh and retired leader of ]. Soon after his appointment as the board member of the ], Imran converted ] into a weekly. In 1998, he converted ] into a daily. At this time he shifted the office of ] and ] from Park Circus to 45, Eliot Road. The erstwhile office at 19, Dargah Road became a hideout of the ] cadres. Apart from being the editor of ], Imran also acted as the India correspondent of a ] controlled ] daily named Naya Diganta published from ].<ref name="abp12092014jagannath"/> His articles were published regularly in Naya Diganta. == Involvement in Canning riots ==
According to report of the South 24 Parganas district Intelligence Bureau send to the West Bengal Home Department, Ahmed Hassan Imran was directly involved in the ] in 2013.<ref name="abp13092014ghatak">{{cite news|url=http://www.anandabazar.com/state/imran-has-been-warns-of-state-agents-1.68573|title=ইমরান নিয়ে সতর্ক করেন রাজ্যের গোয়েন্দারাও|last=Ghatak|first=Shubhashish|date=13 September 2014|work=Anandabazar Patrika|language=Bengali|accessdate=13 September 2014|location=Kolkata}}</ref> The report stated that on 21 February 2013, Imran send large numbers of Muslim youths armed with bombs and other arms from Park Circus to Naliakhali.<ref name="abp13092014ghatak"/> He also send armed youths from Muslim dominated Rajabazar and Metiabruz of Kolkata and Magrahat and Basanti of South 24 Parganas district to Naliakhali.<ref name="abp13092014ghatak"/> The armed youths looted and set fire to around 300 Hindu houses. In the evening he convened a meeting with several Muslim leaders in a five star hotel in Kolkata, where he shared how he had organized the violence and how he would control the area in future.<ref name="abp13092014ghatak"/>

Ahmaed Hassan (Bengali: আহমেদ হাসান) alias Imran is a veteran journalist and was a MP of Rajya Sabha from West Bengal, India. He had sworn into the parliament on 9 June 2014. In April 2017, he was selected as the Chairman for the Telephone Advisory Committees by the Govt. of India. He is now the Chairman of West Bengal Minorities Commission w.e.f 22/06/2023
