== On cleanup using AWB ==

==New Userbox==
Thank you for doing that work, but to be honest, I don't know if it is really necessary to use AWB to just replace HTML to unicode. As far as I can tell it does not make much of a difference, and all I see is my watchlist (on which I have more than 900 articles) gets filled, and it takes more time to check it as well as make sure there is no vandalism/other edits on the same day for those articles. Wonder what you think. You can reply here. Thanks. ] (]) 23:41, 19 June 2006 (UTC)
I made a new userbox for the raiders on my page from the existing one, but I am unclear on how to make a sub page to host it. Please assist. ''']''' ''']''' 19:13, 9 August 2010 (UTC)
:I was doing it because it is much easier to edit a page when the characters are displayed in unicode, slightly easier for regular Wikipedians, and tons easier for new Wikipedians not used to HTML entities, because frankly, if you'd never seen HTML entities before, you may wonder why you're seeing <code>&nbsp;</code> in a page's source code. You are right, though that it makes it harder to check the watchlist to check for vandalism. I'll stop now, though. (You might also want to see ]). :: Heh, if Wikipedians get intimidated by HTML code then we are in big trouble. :) ] has not been around for a while, not in math articles at least. Actually a bot is better for such a job as you can schedule the bot to do a thorough job, but very rarely, say once a year, rather than whenever users feel like adding to their edit count (just kidding :) I think eventually some discussion needs to take place on when/what kind of edits are appropriate with AWB, for example, I won't mind a user doing spell-checking/disambiguation and along the way cleaning up more superficial things. ] (]) 00:43, 20 June 2006 (UTC)

My name is Randall Livingstone, and I am a graduate student at the University of Oregon, currently collecting data for my dissertation on Misplaced Pages editors who create and use bots and assisted editing tools, as well as editors involved in the initial and/or ongoing creation of bot policies on Misplaced Pages. As a member of BAG and the bot community, I would very much like to interview you for the project at a time and in a method that is most convenient for you (Gchat, another IM client, Skype, email, telephone, etc.). Dear Mets501,
== ] ==

My name is Jonathan Obar ], I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Misplaced Pages administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community], where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.
I'm not sure if you've voted at WP:AID before, but I just noticed that when you did, you forgot to update the deadline for one of the projects. You may want to read ] to educate yourself on how the deadlines, etc. work for WP:AID. —<span style="font: small-caps 14px times; color: red;">] (])</span> 16:47, 24 June 2006 (UTC)

:No, you're right! I haven't voted on ] before and I thought that I had read all of the rules. Many thanks for pointing this out to me, much appreciated. <span style="border: 1px solid #800080;">]]</span> 18:56, 24 June 2006 (UTC)

So a few things about the interviews:
== History of Mathematics References ==
* Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
* Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
* All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
* All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
* The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Hi, don't take it personally, but I recently undid your consolidation of the Notes, References, and Bibliography sections into a single section. They serve different functions and are intended to be kept separate. See ]. --] 20:43, 24 June 2006 (UTC)

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your name] instead.

I am developping an music application for mobile devices and i was looking for images to feed the sheet and particulary "Dynamics". == A new user right for New Page Patrollers ==

Hi {{BASEPAGENAME}}.

A new user group, ], has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at ]. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available ] but very often a friendly custom message works best.

== Barlines.svg - in Bar (music) - Swapped words? ==

Hi,
Just wanted to share a notice of a possible error (not sure though!) Within this image:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/File:Barlines.svg
It reads "Begin and End Repeat" under the last barline. But it seems to me like the "End and Begin Repeat" is more appropriate there (and possible to be actually played in that order :))
Couldn't confirm this - my quick search online didn't turn up any other wording or the notation itself. So thought i'd drop a note to the author of the image.

== Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular) ==

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are ] to "have strong passwords and ]." We have ] our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, ] remains an ''optional'' means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -] 21:04, 4 May 2019 (UTC)</small>

== How we will see unregistered users ==

<section begin=content/>
Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin '''will still be able to access the IP'''. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on ] to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can ]. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can ] to ].

We have ] this identity could work. '''We would appreciate your feedback''' on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can ]. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you.

The length of the forces mg sin \theta and mg cos \theta in your picture

https://en.wikipedia.org/Inclined_plane#/media/File:Free_body.svg

are wrong because their sum must be equal to the force mg. When drawing the vector parallelogram (in this case a rectangle), it is clear that the decomposition of mg is wrong and the picture may be missleading.

Request for Interview Regarding Misplaced Pages Bots

Greetings Metx501-

My name is Randall Livingstone, and I am a graduate student at the University of Oregon, currently collecting data for my dissertation on Misplaced Pages editors who create and use bots and assisted editing tools, as well as editors involved in the initial and/or ongoing creation of bot policies on Misplaced Pages. As a member of BAG and the bot community, I would very much like to interview you for the project at a time and in a method that is most convenient for you (Gchat, another IM client, Skype, email, telephone, etc.). I am completely flexible and can work with your schedule. The interview will take approximately 30-45 minutes.

My dissertation project has been approved both by the Institutional Review Board (IRB) at the University of Oregon, and by the Research Committee at the Wikimedia Foundation. You can find more information on the project on my meta page.

Please let me know if you have any questions, and I look forward to hearing from you to set up a time to chat. Thank you very much.

MSU Interview

Dear Mets501,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Misplaced Pages administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the communityHERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your nameHERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chlopeck (talkcontribs) 04:07, 20 February 2012 (UTC)

Invitation to events: bot, template, and Gadget makers wanted

I thought you might want to know about some upcoming events where you can learn more about MediaWiki customization and development, extending functionality with JavaScript, the future of ResourceLoader and Gadgets, the new Lua templating system, how to best use the web API for bots, and various upcoming features and changes. We'd love to have power users, bot maintainers and writers, and template makers at these events so we can all learn from each other and chat about what needs doing.

Check out the the Berlin hackathon in June, the developers' days preceding Wikimania in July in Washington, DC, and our other events.

You can register now for the Berlin event and if you need financial help or visa help, just mention that in the registration form.

Best wishes! - Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation's Volunteer Development Coordinator. Please reply on my talk page, here or at mediawiki.org. Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation Volunteer Development Coordinator 13:40, 2 April 2012 (UTC)

I took your advice here. Thanks for the input. --Eastlaw  ⁄ contribs 09:14, 16 July 2012 (UTC)
OK, I have another question for you. This banned user has a lot of stuff in his userspace. Most of it has few, if any, backlinks. Do you think they should be speedily deleted and if so, under which criterion? (G5? U2?) Thanks again for your advice. --Eastlaw  ⁄ contribs 01:19, 17 July 2012 (UTC)
I wouldn't speedily delete them ("G5 should not be applied to transcluded templates"). Either let them be or move them into another userspace. —METS501 (talk) 00:29, 21 July 2012 (UTC)

Wikipededia dynamics images on musical sheet.

Hello,

For beginning i just want to say "thank you" for the work you've done on Misplaced Pages. I am developping an music application for mobile devices and i was looking for images to feed the sheet and particulary "Dynamics". I saw your images on the Misplaced Pages page : https://fr.wikipedia.org/Nuance_(musique). This exactly what i need, but for Coding reasons, i would prefer to use some text instead of images. Well, i saw that there were no CC on this images, because it only use a font, So i was wondering, could you please tell me what is the font you used to make the dynamics images like "fff" ou "mp" ? It would be very helpful.

Please excuse my english. Best regards.

Hi. I unfortunately don't remember, it was so long ago! I may have just made some images in Inkscape that looked like the music font styles I was used to. —METS501 (talk) 22:48, 26 September 2015 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for September 30

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Misplaced Pages appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited CUORE, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page WIMP. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Misplaced Pages arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Extended confirmed protection

Hello, Mets501. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Misplaced Pages:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:48, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers

Hi Mets501.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM.

User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)

Barlines.svg - in Bar (music) - Swapped words?

Hi, Just wanted to share a notice of a possible error (not sure though!) Within this image: https://commons.wikimedia.org/File:Barlines.svg It reads "Begin and End Repeat" under the last barline. But it seems to me like the "End and Begin Repeat" is more appropriate there (and possible to be actually played in that order :)) Couldn't confirm this - my quick search online didn't turn up any other wording or the notation itself. So thought i'd drop a note to the author of the image. Regards! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Oris1024 (talkcontribs) 17:26, 10 March 2018 (UTC)

Interesting. Not sure it's worth changing, but I see what you're saying. I thought of it as the beginning of a new repeat and the end of the old one. Though either way is good. 73.69.148.60 (talk) 17:00, 11 March 2018 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of File:MetsBot-testing.PNG

The file File:MetsBot-testing.PNG has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Personal file, no foreseeable encyclopedic use. Bot has been inactive for ten years.

While all constructive contributions to Misplaced Pages are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. ArbCom 2019 special circular

Icon of a white exclamation mark within a black triangle
Administrators must secure their accounts

The Arbitration Committee may require a new RfA if your account is compromised.

View additional information

Why have I received this message?
All administrators are receiving it.
What prompted you to send this message?
Recently, several Misplaced Pages admin accounts were compromised. The admin accounts were desysopped on an emergency basis. In the past, the Committee often resysopped admin accounts as a matter of course once the admin was back in control of their account. The committee has updated its guidelines. Admins may now be required to undergo a fresh Request for Adminship (RfA) after losing control of their account.
What do I need to do?
Only to follow the instructions in this message.
  1. Check that your password is unique (not reused across sites).
  2. Check that your password is strong (not simple or guessable).
  3. Enable Two-factor authentication (2FA), if you can, to create a second hurdle for attackers.
How can I find out more about two-factor authentication (2FA)?
You can find out more about 2FA at m:2FA.

This message was sent to all administrators following a recent motion. Thank you for your attention. For the Arbitration Committee, Cameron11598 02:33, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:04, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

How we will see unregistered users

You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Inclined plane forces

The length of the forces mg sin \theta and mg cos \theta in your picture

https://en.wikipedia.org/Inclined_plane#/media/File:Free_body.svg

are wrong because their sum must be equal to the force mg. When drawing the vector parallelogram (in this case a rectangle), it is clear that the decomposition of mg is wrong and the picture may be missleading. Adamek179 (talk) 13:28, 19 February 2022 (UTC)

You're right. It's off by a few pixels. Feel free to update it if you get to it before I do. —METS501 (talk) 13:22, 23 February 2022 (UTC)

New administrator activity requirement

The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

  1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
  2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

Pending suspension of administrative permissions due to inactivity

Information icon Established policy provides for the removal of the administrative permissions of users who have made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period. Your administrative permissions will be removed if you do not return to the required activity level before the beginning of January 2023.

Inactive administrators are encouraged to engage with the project in earnest rather than to make token edits to avoid loss of administrative permissions. Resources and support for re-engaging with the project are available at Misplaced Pages:WikiProject Editor Retention/administrators. If you do not intend to re-engage with the project in the foreseeable future, please consider voluntarily resigning your administrative permissions by making a request at the bureaucrats' noticeboard.

Thank you for your past contributions to the project. — JJMC89 bot 08:53, 1 October 2022 (UTC)

ArbCom 2023 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Misplaced Pages arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2023 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:25, 28 November 2023 (UTC)
