| This user left some defamatory comments on my talk page a few days ago in Spanish, basically calling me a liar. At the time I decided against issueing a <nowiki>{{npa2}}</nowiki> warning and just replied to him in the same language, trying to make him realise that I do not tolerate personal attacks, though assuming good faith and using a conciliatory tone. Today he proceeded to revert my comments, using the edit summary ''"Wanker thinks he's clever"''. I dropped an npa2 this time. He then proceeded to revert this, with another even more offensive edit summary: ''Cabron'' (meaning '']'' in Spanish), for which I left an <nowiki>{{npa3}}</nowiki> this time. He again reverted calling me a ''"mariquita sensible"'' (''sensitive homosexual'', which funnily enough I'm neither of them). I am currently involved giving statement of evidence on an ] on the behaviour of this and other users. Given the current situation (with the arbitration process ongoing), I am not sure if a block is the right thing to do (though this is the fourth insult in a row, each one more offensive than the previous one), but I am not prepared to give him a blank cheque just because the RFA. ]] <sup><small>]</small></sup> 14:18, 2 September 2006 (UTC) | |||

Even after several warnings as well as changes to the header designed to instruct users on how to use this page, this noticeboard continued to deteriorate. The personal attack intervention noticeboard (PAIN), created on 7 October 2005, was intended as a counterpart to the request for intervention against vandalism page. A person with complaints over personal attacks could, after giving warnings, report a personal attacker on this page.
Unfortunately, the noticeboard generated a considerable amount of controversy. While vandalism is usually a clear cut case, and administrator intervention (i.e. blocking) is usually uncontroversial, determining whether a comment is a personal attack, incivil, or just simply blunt and frank, can be quite subjective. That led to a lot of arguments, flame wars, tit-for-tat disputes and wikilawyering on this page. Even after several warnings as well as changes to the header designed to instruct users on how to use this page, this noticeboard continued to deteriorate. Due to this deterioration as well as some particularly poor exchanges in December 2006, the entire page was nominated for deletion, with the result that the noticeboard was closed on 10 January 2007.
The closure of this noticeboard does not mean that personal attacks are tolerated; they should never be. It simply means that complaints over personal attacks are moved to different, and more appropriate venues such as the administrators' noticeboard, dispute resolution or, as a last resort, arbitration.
