==Questions on record==
#Which, according to you are important records in Batting??
#Why was the golden arm term removed. It is told by reputed cricket sources. If well establish cricket writers refer him by one word, it should be taken as such. Remember that Rahul Dravid or Sehwag is not referred by that term. Please note that I have already explained this in the talk section. Don't say that it gives an image as if he is a great bowler to those who don't know about cricket.
"Man with a golden arm" is a description. When he has broken more than one partnership, any bowler can be called with that term. I don't think that it is a NPOV problem. If the sentence had been "he is a bowler who always breaks partnership" that is a different story.
THe description "with golden arm" is usually applied to "part time bowlers" who get wickets of well settled batsmen. The term is not used for the regular bowlers. You can read the old literature and will find that Srilanka's man with golden arm was De Silva (and Not Vaas or Murali) and Australians used that term for Mark Waugh (and not McGrath and Warne) and Mike Clarke (he has so far taken 8 wickets in 20 matches) and in Windies it will be Viv Richards and not Walsh. Hence this is just a FACT. Only if we tell that "Mr.Tendulkar is a bowler who breaks partnerships as soon as he is called to bowl" that will be not be a Neutral Point of View. You cannot ordinarily write this term (golden arm) on the article of Murali or Warne or Walsh. They are bowlers who can get any batsman out. I am sure that now the confusion is cleared.

::The oldest unreviewed articles are: ], ], ], ], and ].
Please read the line I have given "Inspite of his bowling average....." IF someone gets an impression that a person with just 37 wickets in 132 matches (that is one wicket every 8 innings) with a bowling average of over 40 "is a great bowler", it is the fault of the reader. If the term golden arm had been in the first stanza of the article without the other details (which very well tell that the person described is a part time bowler), that can cause some confusion. But in the present scenario, it is just a fact and has no NPOV problems.

::The categories with the largest backlogs are: Social sciences and society (80 articles), Sports and recreation (70 articles), Music (63 articles), Theatre, film and drama (52 articles), and History (41 articles). Please consider reviewing articles within these sections.
Sachin tendulkar does not have a higher rate of taking wickets that break partnerships when you compare him with Muralitharan or Agarkar who are '''bowlers'''. If he has something like that, he will be termed as an '''allrounder''' and not a '''batsman with a golden arm'''. Is that clear. The NPOV issue arises only if we say that Sachin is a genuine test bowler or an allrounder (then only we can compare him with Courtney Walsh or Imran Khan. The term "golden arm" is not limited to ONLY ONE PLAYER (that is the person with maximum wickets or minimum average etc). It is a much general term

::There are currently 13 articles up for reassessment at ]. Please help out and go to ] and review an article! Remember that anyone can review articles that are listed under "Community Reassessment" even if another user has already listed their opinion...the more opinions, the better!
First of all, the description "golden arm" is not a rigid description that can be "proved" with statistics. As I have repeatedly told you, there is no "criteria" that exists to tell a player as "someone with a golden arm". The term is used for batsman who occasionally bowl and break partnerships. THis is the most I can explain. Other facts (including citations) have been already given by me.

; Member News
It means that a '''batsman''', who is not a regular bowler, occasionally breaks partnership. Sachin is definitely inferior to Kapil and Kumble at breaking partnership. That is a fact. But Kapil and Kumble are not called with the term because Kapil is an allrounder and Kumble a bowler. On the other hand, Sachin is better than Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman, Sadagopan Ramesh, Kambli, Gavaskar etc at breaking partnership, and that is the reason cricket wrtiers (not me and you) have given this term to him. The same is true about Clarke, who is an inferior bowler compared to McGrath and Warne. Yet Warne and McGrath are not called as men with golden arm, because they are bowlers. On the other hand Clarke is better than, (for example) Hayden and Ponting and hence called with the term. Is this clear.
==Sachin Tendulkar's Golden Arm==
The single handed has been modified to another match. I am sure that every one agrees with the contribution in this match. Please don't ask a question as if no one else fielded in the match and whether he was the only person in the stadium.
By the way, I am not able to understand as to your edits regarding Golden Arm. It is a term used by reputed Cricket Writers and it was well quoted. I had given more than one citation for that also. Why was that removed. Any '''sensible''' explanation ????.
One explanation that is damn stupid is telling that "it may mislead those who don't know anything about cricket and they may think that he is a great bowler". Please don't give that explanation... PLEASE..... Rejecting a well known and well established fact with a hypothetical theory that a newbie may misunderstand seems very awkward. If you go like this, then when you say caught at mid wicket, some one new to cricket may think that the batsman was caught between the stumps and hence mid wicket violates NPOV etc. Similarly, a person who is new to cricket may think that Fine leg means Aiswarya Rai. If you think carefully, every (or most) term in cricket has another meaning outside cricket. Citing POV telling that those not knowing cricket my misunderstand is a very bad argument.
If you have any other opinion tell us. Or else, please revert yourself. As a respect for you, I am not reverting this edit (Golden Arm) myself. <font style="background:black" color="gold">]</font><font style="background:gold" color="black">]</font> 14:02, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

; Some Tips About References/Sources
*'''Question 3''': Have you ever written or edited an article about your home town or the city you live in?
**'''A''')Yes. '''B''')No. '''C''')Briefly. '''D''')Don't know. '''E''')Other... (''Please explain''). '''F''')Abstain.

Having references included in articles is one of the most important aspects to a good article, let alone Misplaced Pages! Without them, no one would ever know what is true and what is false and Misplaced Pages probably wouldn't be where it is today. So this month, I will talk about how to check for references, how reliable they are, and so on and so forth.
*'''Question 4''': Have you ever edited what was, or turned out to be, a controversial subject or article in current news or on Misplaced Pages?
**'''A''')Yes. '''B''')No. '''C''')Not sure. '''D''')Other... (''Please explain''). '''F''')Abstain.

The first thing to do when reviewing an nominee is to do a quick scan of the article. One of the things to look for is if the article has references! If you don't see a list at the bottom of the article page, quick-fail it.<ref>Before quick-failing the article, verify that one of the several referencing templates is correctly placed at the bottom of the article. If the template is not placed, try to place it to see if references are displayed. If this proof returns no references, then proceed to quick-failing.</ref> For newcomers, quick-failing is failing an article when you spot a problem before actually conducting a full review. If you do find a list of references (and in most cases you will) make sure to look through each and every one. If you want to save some time, use as it will tell you if there are any problematic references in the article you are reviewing.
*'''Question 5''': Have you ever reverted vandalism?
**'''A''')Yes. '''B''')No. '''C''')Not sure. '''D''')Other... (''Please explain''). '''E''')Abstain.

Next, check the reliability and type of the references/sources. In terms of the type of reference, check to see how many primary and/or secondary sources are included. Primary sources are the ones published by the subject of the article. For example, if the subject of the article has to do with the ] and the source is published by ], it is considered a primary source. Secondary sources are those ''not'' published by the subject of the article (or in close relation to it). Newspapers are examples of secondary sources and considered one of the better types to include in the article (not saying primary sources are bad). If you find that most/all of the references are primary sources, notify the nominator about this issue(s) and place the article on hold once you have completed the review. Only in the event that a secondary source can't be found as a replacement, then the primary source can remain. If there is a good mix of primary and secondary sources, that is perfect and no references need to be changed.
*'''Question 6''': Have you ever helped get an article to Featured Article status?
**'''A''')Yes. '''B''')No. '''C''')I helped partly. '''D''')I've edited a Featured Article after it was promoted, but never helped to get one featured. '''E''')Not sure. '''F''')Other... (''Please explain''). '''G''')Abstain.

Now, reliability. Forums are generally not considered reliable and some blog's may not be reliable either. Newspapers, most sources published by the subject, some blogs, etc. are considered reliable. If you don't know wether the source is reliable, ask for a second opinion. For more info about how to identify wether a reference is reliable or not, visit ].
*'''Question 7''': Do you find it difficult to think of things to write about on Misplaced Pages?
**'''A''')Yes. '''B''')No. '''C''')Sometimes. '''D''')Not sure. '''E''')Other... (''Please explain''). '''F''')Abstain.

Finally, one of the more basic things to look for is that every statement in the article has at least one reference! The only case that a statement doesn't need a reference is when it is common sense that the statement is defiantly true and/or in the case where the statement can't be challenged, as per what Misplaced Pages says, "All quotations and any material challenged or likely to be challenged must be attributed to a reliable published source using an inline citation."
*'''Question 8''': On Misplaced Pages, do you edit articles to do with Misplaced Pages policies & voting etc more frequently than you edit actual encyclopedic articles?
**'''A''')Yes. '''B''')No. '''C''')I have an equal mix of the two. '''D''')Occasionally. '''E''')Not sure. '''F''')Other... (''Please explain''). '''G''')Abstain.

; From the Editor
*'''Question 9''': Do you wish there was a Misplaced Pages article about your life?
**'''A''')Yes. '''B''')No. '''C''')Sometimes. '''D''')Not sure. '''E''')Other... (''Please explain''). '''F''')Abstain.

After a long 18 month hiatus, the third volume of the WikiProject Good Articles newsletter is here! Please leave any comments or feedback regarding this issue of the newsletter ] or on the editors ].
*'''Question 10''': Would you like to expand the range of topics you write about on Misplaced Pages?
**'''A''')Yes. '''B''')No. '''C''')Sometimes. '''D''')I don't know. '''E''')Other... (''Please explain''). '''F''')Abstain.

Also, Happy Halloween...in advance!!!
*'''Question 11''': Do you usually write about topics that are to do with your job, school or hobbies?

Bl, I spent about 20 mins reviewing the article and adding tags and removing POV. It is not upto some user to simply do away with the tag and continue building the article. I dont have problems if the article grows, but the editors should atleast have the basic courtesy and manners to keep the tags until they've provided proper citations. And why should I keep spending more and more time adding the same tags. Let Arya who removed the tags pay for it and do the hard work. I just want my tags back on the article. Or I will go ahead and delete entries for which I had asked for citation and Arya simply deleted those tags. * A tit-for-tat citation nit-picking war is bad - wrt those Karnataka pages
*Using a Misplaced Pages article as a reference is circular reasoning and is considered invalid - you cannot cite yourself!
* I will hopefully look at the articles myself soon
* Comments implying vandalism are wrong, and nonsensical and innappropriate threats to engage in counter-Kannada vandalism is disruption and will result in a block - also see ] violation

In past Backlog Drives, the goal was to reduce the backlog of Good article nominations. In the upcoming drive, another goal will be added - raising as much money as we can for the Wikimedia Foundation. How will this work? Well, its pretty simple. Any user interested in donating can submit a pledge at the Backlog Drive page (linked above). The pledge should mention the amount of money the user is willing to donate '''per review'''. For example, if a user pledges 5 cents per review and 100 nominations are reviewed, the total donation amount is $5.00.<br/>

At the time this message was sent out, two users have submitted pledges for a total of 8 cents per review. All pledges, no matter how much money, are greatly appreciated. Also, in no way is this saying you must make a pledge.</br>

How can one call Shivaji as "Sevooji". This is in totally bad taste.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{Tlc|proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the ], but other ]es exist. == WikiProject Good articles Future GAN Backlog Drive ==

Hello everyone! Hope you've all been having a great summer!

] recently proposed the idea of having another Backlog Drive in either September/October or November/December of this year. For those of you who have participated in the past two drives you know I was the one who organized them, however, come September, this will be my most important year in school so I will not be able to coordinate this drive (if it happens). TheQ Editor has volunteered to be a coordinator for the drive. If any of you would like to co-coordinator, please notify TheQ Editor on his talk page.

If you would be interested in participating in a Backlog Drive sometime before the end of this year, please notify TheQ Editor. Also, make sure to specify what month(s) work best for you.

At the time this message was sent out, the backlog was at 520 nominations. Since May, the backlog has been steadily increasing and we are currently near an all time high. Even though the backlog will not disappear over one drive, this drive can lead to several others which will (hopefully) lead to the day where there is no longer a backlog.

As always, the more participants, the better, and everyone is encouraged to participate!

== GA Cup ==

Hello everyone! We hope you have all been having a great summer!

As we all know, the recent GAN Backlog Drives have not had any big impact on the backlog. Because of that, me (Dom497), Figureskatingfan, and TheQ Editor have worked on an idea that could possibly finally put a dent into the massive backlog. Now, I will admit, the idea isn't entirely ours as we have took the general idea of the WikiCup and brought it over to WikiProject Good Articles. But anyways, here's what we have in mind:

For all of you that do not know what the ] is, it is an annual competition between several editors to see who can get the most Good Articles, Featured Article's, Did You Know's, etc. Based of this, we propose to you the GA Cup. This competition will only focus on reviewing Good articles.

For more info on the proposal, ]. As a FYI, the proposal page is not what the final product will look like (if you do go ahead with this idea). It will look very similar to WikiCup's page(s).

The discussion for the proposal will take place ]. Please let us know if you are interested, have any concerns, things to consider, etc.

WikiProject Good articles is holding a new competition, the ], from October 1, 2014 - March 28, 2015. The Cup will be based on reviewing ]; for each review, points will be awarded with bonuses for older nominations, longer articles and comprehensive reviews. All participants will start off in one group and the highest scoring participants will go through to the second round. At the moment six rounds are planned, but this may change based on participant numbers.

Some of you may ask: what is the purpose for a competition of this type? Currently, there is a backlog of about 500 unreviewed Good article nominations, almost an all time high. It is our hope that we can decrease the backlog in a fun way, through friendly competition.

Everyone is welcome to join; new and old editors! ] will be open until October 15, 2014 so sign-up now!

Yeah, I know this talk page is protected. Yeah, I know you have retired. But you do the best work on Vietnamese articles I can think of, so if you want a project if and when you return, while pounding the "random article" button I came across Vietnamese family and thought maybe you'd be able to work it up a bit. Possibly needs a re-title (Family life in Vietnam?) and a lot of TLC, but when I saw it needed help, I thought I'd throw it your way. Toodles. --Jayron32 01:21, 5 July 2011 (UTC)

Notification of pending suspension of administrative permissions due to inactivity

Following a community discussion in June 2011, consensus was reached to provisionally suspend the administrative permissions of users who have been inactive for one year (i.e. administrators who have not made any edits or logged actions in over one year). As a result of this discussion, your administrative permissions will be removed pending your return if you do not return to activity within the next month. If you wish to have these permissions reinstated should this occur, please post to the Misplaced Pages:Bureaucrats' noticeboard and the userright will be restored per the re-sysopping process (i.e., as long as the attending bureaucrats are reasonably satisfied that your account has not been compromised and that your inactivity did not have the effect of evading scrutiny of any actions which might have led to sanctions). This removal of access is procedural only, and not intended to reflect negatively upon you in any way. We wish you the best in future endeavors, and thank you for your past administrative efforts.

Orphaned non-free image File:Olympic panda.jpg

⚠

Thanks for uploading File:Olympic panda.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Misplaced Pages under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Misplaced Pages. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Misplaced Pages (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hammersoft (talk) 21:53, 20 December 2011 (UTC)

Non-free rationale for File:Olympic panda.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Olympic panda.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Misplaced Pages is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Misplaced Pages page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Hammersoft (talk) 21:53, 20 December 2011 (UTC)

Main page appearance: Kevin O'Halloran

This is a note to let the main editors of Kevin O'Halloran know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on March 3, 2012. You can view the TFA blurb at Misplaced Pages:Today's featured article/March 3, 2012. If you prefer that the article appear as TFA on a different date, or not at all, please ask featured article director Raul654 (talk · contribs) or his delegate Dabomb87 (talk · contribs), or start a discussion at Misplaced Pages talk:Today's featured article/requests. If the previous blurb needs tweaking, you might change it—following the instructions at Misplaced Pages:Today's featured article/requests/instructions. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. The blurb as it stands now is below:

Kevin O'Halloran (1937–1976) was an Australian freestyle swimmer of the 1950s, who won a gold medal in the 4 × 200 m freestyle relay at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne. The first Western Australian to win Olympic gold, O'Halloran learnt to swim in his home town of Katanning. He moved to Perth to attend secondary schooling at Guildford Grammar School, where he began swimming passionately. Competitive swimming was not well developed in Western Australia; races were held in muddy river pools, so in late 1955, O'Halloran moved to the east coast to support his attempt to qualify for the Olympics. His new coach, Frank Guthrie, overhauled his training regimen, and within a year, O'Halloran had reduced his times by approximately 10%. He gained Olympic selection in the relay and the 400 m freestyle. O'Halloran led off the Australian quartet on the way to a new world record, before placing sixth in the 400 m. Thereafter, O'Halloran's career was beset by ear problems, and he retired in 1958 after failing to qualify for the 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games. In 1976, O'Halloran died after tripping and accidentally shooting himself. (more...)

Please come back

Look Yellow Monkey. Because you've been inactive for over a year they've taken your admin tools away from you anyway. So if you return you will hardly face a "grilling" which I believe was the reason you quit anyway. Seriously please return and just focus on content, what you do best. Main page appearance: Charlie Macartney

This is a note to let the main editors of Charlie Macartney know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on March 25, 2012. You can view the TFA blurb at Misplaced Pages:Today's featured article/March 25, 2012.

1920's-era photograph of Charlie Macartney

Charlie Macartney (1886–1958) was an Australian cricketer who played in 35 Tests between 1907 and 1926. He was known as The Governor-General in reference to his authoritative batting style and his flamboyant strokeplay, which drew comparisons with his close friend and role model Victor Trumper. Making his Test debut in 1907, his most noteworthy Test contribution in his early career was a match-winning ten wicket haul at Headingley in 1909. It was around this time that Macartney befriended Trumper and began to transform himself into an audacious attacking batsman. The First World War stopped all first-class cricket and Macartney enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force. Upon the resumption of cricket, Macartney stamped himself as one of the leading batsmen in the world with his performances during the 1921 Ashes tour. Macartney produced an Australian record score in England of 345 against Nottinghamshire, which led to him being named one of the five Wisden Cricketers of the Year in 1922. After missing the 1924–25 series due to mental illness or a recurrence of war injuries, Macartney departed international cricket on the 1926 tour of England. Macartney was posthumously inducted into the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame in 2007. (more...)

  • Had a quick squizz at the article in YM's absence and, given it achieved FA in 2007, it seems in remarkably good condition with very few edits since then; just tweaked a couple of things that seemed in need of a little improvement... Cheers, Ian Rose (talk) 04:49, 24 March 2012 (UTC)

WikiProject Good articles (Participant Clean-Up)

Hello, you are receiving this message because you are currently a participant of WikiProject Good articles. Since the creation of the WikiProject, over 200 user's have joined to help review good article nominations and contribute to other sections of the WikiProject. Over the years, several of these users have stopped reviewing articles and/or have become inactive with the project but are still listed as participates. In order to improve communications with other participants and get newsletters sent out faster (newsletters will begin to be sent out monthly starting in October) all participants that are no longer active with the WikiProject will be removed from the participants list.

If you are still interested in being a participant for this WikiProject, please sign your user name here and please help review some articles so we can reduce the size of the backlog. If you are no longer interested, you do not need to sign your name anywhere and your name will be removed from the participants list after the deadline. Remember that even if you are not interested at this time, you can always re-add your name to the list whenever you want. The deadline to sign your name on the page above will be November 1, 2012. Thank-you. 13:37, 22 September 2012 (UTC)

Update for: WikiProject Good articles (Participant Clean-Up)

Sorry for having to send out a second message but a user has brought to my attention that a point mentioned in the first message should be clarified. If user's don't sign on this page, they will be moved to an "Inactive Participants" list rather then be being removed from the entire WikiProject. Sorry for any confusion.--Dom497 (talk)15:26, 22 September 2012 (UTC)

  • There are currently 15,862 Good Articles listed at WP:GA.
  • The backlog at Good Article Nominations is 345 unreviewed articles. Out of 439 total nominations, 24 are on hold, 66 are under review, and 4 are seeking a second opinion. Please go to WP:GAN and review an article! Even just reviewing one will help!
The oldest unreviewed articles are: General sejm, Prime Minister of Vietnam, Tanisha Thomas, Kosta Pećanac, and Jilly Kitzinger.
The categories with the largest backlogs are: Social sciences and society (80 articles), Sports and recreation (70 articles), Music (63 articles), Theatre, film and drama (52 articles), and History (41 articles). Please consider reviewing articles within these sections.
There are currently 13 articles up for reassessment at Good Article Reassessment. Please help out and go to WP:GAR and review an article! Remember that anyone can review articles that are listed under "Community Reassessment" even if another user has already listed their opinion...the more opinions, the better!
Member News
  • There are currently 222 members of WikiProject Good Articles! Welcome to all the new members that joined during the past 17 months! If you aren't yet part of WikiProject Good Articles and interested in joining WikiProject Good Articles, go here and add you name. Everyone is welcomed!

  • If you haven't done so already, please remember to add your name to this list if you are still interested/active with this WikiProject. If you are no longer interested/active you don't need to add your name anywhere, you're name will be moved into a "inactive participant" list at the beginning of November. Inactive users will not receive future newsletters from this WikiProject via their talk page.
GA Task forces
  • There is currently not much going on at this time but there is a very large backlog. Until the next backlog elimination drive, please help reduce the number of nominations by reviewing articles and helping other reviewers that may need second opinions.
  • Thanks to everyone who committed some time to help reduce the nominations backlog during the June-July 2012 backlog elimination drive. Most barnstars have been given out but there are still a few left. Participants that haven't gotten a barnstar yet should get it soon.
Possible Fall/Winter 2012 Backlog Elimination Drive
  • A discussion is currently being held on the WikiProject's talk page on weather another eliminations drive should take place within the next few months as the last one proved to be extremely successful. Please take the time to go to the the talk page and include your opinion on if you would be interested in taking part in a Fall/Winter 2012 elimination drive.
Good Articles of the Month

Each month, 5 random good articles will be choose to be featured here as the good articles of the month.

Some Tips About References/Sources

Having references included in articles is one of the most important aspects to a good article, let alone Misplaced Pages! Without them, no one would ever know what is true and what is false and Misplaced Pages probably wouldn't be where it is today. So this month, I will talk about how to check for references, how reliable they are, and so on and so forth.

The first thing to do when reviewing an nominee is to do a quick scan of the article. One of the things to look for is if the article has references! If you don't see a list at the bottom of the article page, quick-fail it. For newcomers, quick-failing is failing an article when you spot a problem before actually conducting a full review. If you do find a list of references (and in most cases you will) make sure to look through each and every one. If you want to save some time, use this tool as it will tell you if there are any problematic references in the article you are reviewing.

Next, check the reliability and type of the references/sources. In terms of the type of reference, check to see how many primary and/or secondary sources are included. Primary sources are the ones published by the subject of the article. For example, if the subject of the article has to do with the iPhone 4s and the source is published by Apple, it is considered a primary source. Secondary sources are those not published by the subject of the article (or in close relation to it).

Now, reliability. Forums are generally not considered reliable and some blog's may not be reliable either. Newspapers, most sources published by the subject, some blogs, etc. are considered reliable. If you don't know wether the source is reliable, ask for a second opinion. For more info about how to identify wether a reference is reliable or not, visit this article.

Did You Know...
  • ... that 2,100 articles have been reviewed during all backlog elimination drives combined?
  • ... that out of 4,055,039 articles on Misplaced Pages, only 15,846 are good articles?
  • ... that there are currently over 400 video game good articles?
Notes
  1. As of October 2, 2012 at 19:05 (UTC).
  2. Before quick-failing the article, verify that one of the several referencing templates is correctly placed at the bottom of the article. If the template is not placed, try to place it to see if references are displayed. If this proof returns no references, then proceed to quick-failing.

Ngô Đình Diệm

The State of Vietnam referendum held on 23 October 1955 determined the future form of government of the State of Vietnam, the nation that was to become South Vietnam. It was contested by Prime Minister Ngô Đình Diệm (pictured), who proposed a republic, and former emperor Bảo Đại, the head of state. Diệm won the election, which was widely marred by electoral fraud, with 98.2% of the vote. In the capital Saigon, Diệm was credited with more than 600,000 votes, although only 450,000 people were on the electoral roll. He accumulated tallies in excess of 90% of the registered voters, even in rural regions where opposition groups prevented voting. The referendum was the last phase in the power struggle between Bảo Đại and his prime minister. In the period leading up to the vote, campaigning for Bảo Đại was banned, while Diệm's election campaign used personal attacks against him, including pornographic cartoons and rumours that he was illegitimate. Bảo Đại was attacked by the government-controlled media, and police went door-to-door, warning people of the consequences of failing to vote. After his brother Ngô Đình Nhu successfully rigged the poll, Diệm proclaimed himself president. (Full article...)

WikiProject Good Articles Recruitment Centre

Hello! Now, some of you might be wondering why there is a Good article icon with a bunch of stars around (to the right). The answer? WikiProject Good articles will be launching a Recruitment Centre very soon! The centre will allow all users to be taught how to review Good article nominations by experts just like you! However, in order for the Recruitment Centre to open in the first place, we need some volunteers:
  • Recruiters: The main task of a recruiter is to teach users that have never reviewed a Good article nomination how to review one. To become a recruiter, all you have to do is meet this criteria. If we don't get at least 5-10 recruiters to start off with, the Recruitment Centre will not open. If interested, make sure you meet the criteria, read the process and add your name to the list of recruiters. (One of the great things about being a recruiter is that there is no set requirement of what must be taught and when. Instead, all the content found in the process section is a guideline of the main points that should be addressed during a recruitment session...you can also take an entire different approach if you wish!) If you think you will not have the time to recruit any users at this time but are still interested in becoming a recruiter, you can still add your name to the list of recruiters but just fill in the "Status" parameter with "Not Available".
  • Co-Director: The current Director for the centre is me (Dom497). Another user that would be willing to help with some of the tasks would be helpful. Tasks include making sure recruiters are doing what they should be (teaching!), making sure all recruitments are archived correctly, updating pages as needed, answering any questions, and distributing the feedback form. If interested, please contact me (Dom497).
  • Nominators, please read this: If you are not interested in becoming a recruiter, you can still help. In some cases a nominator may have an issue with an "inexperienced" editor (the recruitee) reviewing one of their nominations. To minimize the chances of this happening, if you are fine with a recruitee reviewing one of your nominations under the supervision of the recruiter, please add your name to the list at the bottom of this page. By adding your name to this list, chances are that your nomination will be reviewed more quickly as the recruitee will be asked to choose a nomination from the list of nominators that are OK with them reviewing the article.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me. I look forward to seeing this program bring new reviewers to the Good article community and all the positive things it will bring along.

A message will be sent out to all recruiters regarding the date when the Recruitment Centre will open when it is determined. The message will also contain some further details to clarify things that may be a bit confusing.--Dom497 (talk)

WikiProject Good Articles Recruitment Centre

Hello! Now, some of you might have already received a similar message a little while ago regarding the Recruitment Centre, so if you have, there is no need to read the rest of this. This message is directed to users who have reviewed over 15 Good article nominations and are not part of WikiProject Good articles (the first message I sent out went to only WikiProject members).

The blurb as it stands now is below:

Lê Quang Tung (1923–63) was the commander of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam Special Forces under the command of Ngô Đình Nhu, brother of South Vietnam's president, Ngô Đình Diệm. During the 1950s, Tung was a high-ranking official in Nhu's Cần Lao, a secret political apparatus which maintained the Ngô family's grip on power. Appointed as commander of the special forces in 1960, his leadership was noted more for repressing dissidents than fighting the Viet Cong insurgents. His most well-known attack was the raid on Xá Lợi pagoda in August 1963 in which hundreds died or disappeared. Tung's main military programme was a scheme in which army personnel attempted to infiltrate North Vietnam for intelligence gathering and sabotage. The program was ineffective, with the vast majority of infiltrators being killed or captured. Tung was also reported to be planning an assassination attempt on Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr., the U.S. Ambassador to South Vietnam. Following the pagoda raids, America terminated funding to Tung's men because they were used as a political tool rather than against the communists. Along with Diệm and Nhu, Tung was assassinated during the November 1963 coup. (Full article...)

I agree as well, your loss was the most deeply personal to me in the project and many of my fellow editors would agree with me. You have strong support from the community to return, and your content contributions and your laid back but firm style was invaluable and set a fine example to a future generation of editors. The project is deteriorating because we simply don't have many editors like you anymore! We need you back, whatever it takes. Secret 12:52, 13 November 2013 (UTC)

I finally understood the reasons of your absence and hell, I don't blame you. Misplaced Pages is a terrible place and extremely addictive at times, especially back in 2009. But this is a totally changed community now and we would stand behind you 100%. If you come back simply to write content, it would be one of the biggest pleasures this project have seen in years. I'm not asking you to come back full time to this headache, but to memorize the good times of your project experience and ponder about making this a part time hobby by providing your irreplaceable knowledge. GAN December 2013 Backlog Drive

Hello! A GAN Backlog Drive will begin in less than 4 days!

The pledge should mention the amount of money the user is willing to donate per review. For example, if a user pledges 5 cents per review and 100 nominations are reviewed, the total donation amount is $5.00.

At the time this message was sent out, two users have submitted pledges for a total of 8 cents per review. All pledges, no matter how much money, are greatly appreciated. Also, in no way is this saying you must make a pledge.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me or leave a message on the Backlog Drive talk page. And remember, there are less than 4 days before the drive starts!--EdwardsBot (talk) 03:06, 27 November 2013 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Gary Chapman (director)

The article Gary Chapman (director) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No evidence he's a notable film director or artist. Notability tag is 4 years old. Directing one notable film is not sufficient to meet WP:ARTIST criteria.

While all constructive contributions to Misplaced Pages are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Nomination of Gary Chapman (director) for deletion

The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article. Sionk (talk) 12:43, 4 January 2014 (UTC)

Main Page appearance: Jack Marsh

This is a note to let the main editors of Jack Marsh know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on February 23, 2014. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. If you prefer that the article appear as TFA on a different date, or not at all, please ask Bencherlite (talk · contribs). If it needs tweaking, or if it needs rewording to match improvements to the article between now and its main page appearance, please edit it, following the instructions at Misplaced Pages:Today's featured article/requests/instructions. The blurb as it stands now is below:

Jack Marsh

Jack Marsh (c. 1874 – 1916) was a first-class cricketer of Australian aboriginal descent whose career was curtailed by continual controversy surrounding the legality of his bowling action. Born into the Bundjalung people at Yulgilbar in New South Wales, he first made an impression as a professional runner before playing club cricket in Sydney. In a trial match against the New South Wales state team in 1900, he dismissed two Test cricketers but was called for throwing; he then bowled with his arm in splints to prove that his action was legitimate. Having topped the bowling averages in the local competition, Marsh was selected to make his debut in the Sheffield Shield. He made an immediate impression and led the first-class bowling averages for the season after three matches. He was no-balled in his second match and then seventeen times in his fourth match, leading to angry crowd demonstrations. Marsh only played in two more first-class matches and he was passed over for selection for Australia because of his action. Regarded as one of the outstanding talents of his era, his lack of opportunities has often been attributed to racial discrimination. (Full article...)

WikiProject Good articles Future GAN Backlog Drive

Hello everyone! Hope you've all been having a great summer!

TheQ Editor recently proposed the idea of having another Backlog Drive in either September/October or November/December of this year.

GA Cup

Hello everyone! We hope you have all been having a great summer!

As we all know, the recent GAN Backlog Drives have not had any big impact on the backlog. Because of that, me (Dom497), Figureskatingfan, and TheQ Editor have worked on an idea that could possibly finally put a dent into the massive backlog. Now, I will admit, the idea isn't entirely ours as we have took the general idea of the WikiCup and brought it over to WikiProject Good Articles. But anyways, here's what we have in mind:

For all of you that do not know what the WikiCup is, it is an annual competition between several editors to see who can get the most Good Articles, Featured Article's, Did You Know's, etc. Based of this, we propose to you the GA Cup. This competition will only focus on reviewing Good articles.

For more info on the proposal, click here. As a FYI, the proposal page is not what the final product will look like (if you do go ahead with this idea). It will look very similar to WikiCup's page(s).

The discussion for the proposal will take place here. Please let us know if you are interested, have any concerns, things to consider, etc.

WikiProject Good Articles - GA Cup

WikiProject Good Articles's 2014-15 GA Cup

WikiProject Good articles is holding a new competition, the GA Cup, from October 1, 2014 - March 28, 2015. The Cup will be based on reviewing Good article nominations; for each review, points will be awarded with bonuses for older nominations, longer articles and comprehensive reviews.

Sign-ups will be open until October 15, 2014 so sign-up now!

If you have any questions, take a look at the FAQ page and/or contact one of the four judges.

Cheers from NickGibson3900, Dom497, TheQ Editor and Figureskatingfan.

Hi. You're missed. Meanwhile, we've got an OK for an Ashes-related FA on Main page for Nov 23. As a placeholder (and maybe final too) I've plumped for Bodyline. If you're interested in editing the main page text, you're welcome to do so at Misplaced Pages:Today's featured article/July 22, 2020, but note that a coordinator will trim the lead to around 1000 characters anyway, so you aren't obliged to do so.

Thank you today for Third Test, 1948 Ashes series, introduced (2009): "This match was most infamous for the controversial omission of the leading England batsman Len Hutton. Also, despite one day's play being washed out and rain being prevalent, it broke a record for the most spectators at a Test match in England, showing how popular the 1948 Australians were."! - We miss you. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:08, 8 July 2023 (UTC)
