This book tells the heartwarming tale of a fearless little girl who faced death straight on. The main character is Hannah, a three year old girl who dies of a rare and agressive form of kidney ]. Through this book, Hannah's mother, Maria, documents Hannah's life and death, and her own struggle to have another child. Throughout the book, Hannah teaches us the meaning of life even after she's gone. From this story emerges five profound lessons - of truth, joy, faith, compassion and wonder. Her mother is like her messenger to the reader. This little girl even at such a young age shows us that life is not what you do but how you do it, she encourages you to live as you want not how society dictates.

Through this story we see that children should not be kept in the dark about any illness as Will, Hannah's brother, and Hannah herself showed that children are able to understand in their own ways what their fate is and should not be kept in the dark. In death children ask only two questions, 'Will it hurt?' and 'Will somebody be with me?'. If both of these things are met children are usually at ease.
