''What matters in being loyal or just is that you do fulfil the charge, in a wine-feast that you do enjoy, in mourning that you do grieve, in serving parents that you do please them. To the glory of fulfilling the charge you can pick your own route; in serving parents, if you do please them they won't raise difficulties about how you did it; in the wine-feast, if you do enjoy you won't be finicky about the cups; in mourning, if you do grieve no one quibbles about the rite.

''The rites are what the custom of the times has established. The genuine is the means by which we draw upon Heaven; it is spontaneous and irreplaceable. Therefore the sage, taking Heaven as his model, values the genuine and is untramelled by custom. The fool does the opposite; incapable of taking Heaven as his model he frets about man, ignorant of how to value the genuine he timidly lets himself be altered by custom, and so is an unsatisfied man. What a pity you were steeped so soon in man's artificialities, and are so late in hearing the greatest Way!''

About meI am a longtime Wikipedian. I have been an active editor since 2004, and an administrator since 2005. I've written dozens of articles and made thousands of edits. I have been an arbitrator, oversighter, and CheckUser, and have served as an administrator on the English Wiktionary, English Wikisource, and Meta-Wiki. These days, I mostly work in the GLAM-related areas. I previously served as a Wikipedian in Residence at the US National Archives (from 2011-2012 and 2013-2019) and, briefly, the Smithsonian Institution (2013). I have been very active in working on bulk imports, to both Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata. I have also performed work on behalf of the Cleveland Museum of Art, developing their Wikidata bot. I have a strong interest in building capacity and community, and have been very involved in developing the GLAM Boot Camp. I follow (and exceed) all requirements related to conflict of interest for all these various positions I have held. Because the list has gotten long over more than a decade of work, I please see /Affiliations for more information on all my past and current paid work. |
My workI am a paid employee of the Digital Public Library of America (DPLA). I work to make DPLA's cultural artifacts more accessible to the public by sharing them on Wikimedia Commons and making them available to Misplaced Pages for use in articles. When I am editing Misplaced Pages as part of my professional duties, I always strive to strictly abide by Misplaced Pages's accepted practices on conflicts of interest, neutrality, and notability. I will always work in the best interest of Misplaced Pages, because that is in line with DPLA's educational mission. You can read more about this project at our announcement. If you have any questions about my role, or if there is any way I or DPLA can help you in your work on Misplaced Pages, please get in touch! |
