== The Name of the <nowiki>]</nowiki> Article ==
I have been making comments about the change of the name of ] from <nowiki> ]</nowiki> on the ] page. There has been no response. No response is a reasonable response, but I want to make sure that no response is not the simple result of not noticing the discussion. I do not add all of the pages I edit to my watch list.

E-mail is a nice idea, but I do not have an e-mail address. --] (]) 00:13, 20 June 2010 (UTC)
Sorry for having to fix signatures for my comments - the comments were not from other users, they were all mine. Of course I would not sign comments of other people with my name! The username "HeIe 7" (with uppercase i as third letter) I registered also on my name because of warnings about possible abuse of the "uppercase i=lowercase L" problem, but I will avoid using this username in future. And the IP was mine, too. I fixed this because I think it is good to have all my comments under one username. ] 23:20, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
:If you first see this thread after this comment, the matter seems pretty well settled now. --] (]) 16:42, 22 June 2010 (UTC)
:You aren't supposed to sign things that could potentially be from other users, though. I'm going to add a small notice beside the contributions nothing that they were made under another username / IP. -- ] | ] | 23:48, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
:What do you mean by "things that could potentially be from other users"? Anything I write could in principle be written by someone else. Btw, everybody can see the history. You can apply for IP check, if you do not believe that these are my comments. ] 00:57, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
:Now you have labelled my comments as having been unsigned, although they never were, as everybody can see from the history. Could you fix this? And maybe you as a more experenced wiki user could extract some useful points from the discussion into this article and article about ] which so sadly looks like a stub. Given the recent events, I'll stay on talk pages for a while. ] 01:31, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

I did this under ]. At the moment I am unlogged and the system will show you the IP, is this the sufficient proof about the IP or should I try to create an user page for the IP? Actually it were fine if some admin could delete this IP from wiki system at all. I do not need third username and I will even not bother to remember this number, as the IP is a dynamical one and may be different next time. ] 10:15, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

Hi. Thanks for helping convert location maps from templates to modules. A few notes, though:
:::I know, but I did the whole moving for you in order to help the first article down the "Right path". Now you have this perfectly valid list to link to from the main Cuban art article; it can still act to encourage expansion. The Misplaced Pages is collaborative for a reason here. -- ] | ] | 00:15, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
*All parameters should be converted (you omitted "type").
*Templates should never redirect to modules. No page at all should exist where the template used to be, and any redirect templates need to be re-created as redirect modules (or, if nothing transcludes them, they can just be deleted).
*No redirects should be left behind in template space at all, including doc pages.
*Talk pages should be moved from the template to the module (e.g., ] to ]).
*Attribution pages should be totally blanked to prevent their accidental use.

Hi Crustacean, thank you for your ping. Mind if you can enlighten me as to the circumstances of the article and its content? From what I've seen I assume that the user who created the article was probably the creator of the website where the article content was lifted from; from what I understand from policy that without expressed permission of the author himself, the article is a CSD for copyvio.
==Vandalism in reverts war==

I get that he must give expressed permission, but I wonder if by doing so that he must release his own content from copyright, I wonder what are the future ramifications for him concerning his licensing and IP rights that he has over his own content, especially if for example some of his content is from Twitter, and depending of Twitter's T&Cs, I'm not sure if he can claim copyright on that content. Hope you get what I mean. Cheers, ]] 08:40, 23 November 2015 (UTC)

:What specifically? If you were talking about ] (who seems to have been repeatedly adding copyrighted material), then it appears that it's stopped and nothing else can be done at this time. If it's the general neutrality issues in the article, I'm not sure that I can be of great assistance. I have extremely little experience with the conflict or the region. I'll read it over, but I don't know how well I can help. Sorry. -- ] | ] | 20:34, 15 August 2006 (UTC)
::The special circumstances (i.e., good chance it's his own material, or at the very least material from an organization he's associated with) warrant some extra care and instruction to the user. G12 is also only supposed to be used when it's ''unambiguous'' copyright violation, but since he hasn't actually made a claim or contested the speedy himself that's probably fine. I've both added a comment on his talk page and emailed him, so in my opinion it's all good now.

::#He doesn't have to ''release it from copyright'', he has to agree to relicense to be compatible with Misplaced Pages's licenses.
::#Twitter's T&Cs don't in any way remove his ownership over his own content. They require that he also give them permission to use it, but that's all. None of the article content is on Twitter anyways, it's taken from / based on the Apache Eagle documentation.

::: I'm not sure about the GNU licence, but for the CC licence, agreeing to licence content on CC means that the creator doesn't give up copyright on the content, but cannot release it from the CC licence; which effectively means that the copyright claim cannot be used with regards to users of the content who hasn't broken the licence. As for China, I just wonder if it has anything to do with Tor, since such services has to be used by Chinese people in order to circumvent their internet blocking. I noticed that you removed a large portion of the handheld consoles from the list, but it appears that you left in the sections for the Nintendo DS and the Sony PSP. I didn't want to remove them (still not entirely comfortable with table editing on Wiki), but thought I'd drop a line to see whether it was just an oversight. Cheers! ] 11:35, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

:Yes, I removed the seperate handheld section to move it over to the other page (which, as you've likely noticed, still hasn't progressed all that quickly). The DS and PSP are still in the controller lists right now though, because from what's been said by the companies they do have the capability of acting as actual controllers for the Wii/PS3.
:However, they were previously referring to the controls built into the units, which was where some confusion came from. ::::I was protecting Shkodër from POV. And as you can see from the talk pages I suggested that the person put the {{fact}} tag until someone comes along and substantiates it. S/he could've been blocked for breaking the 3RR just as easily, but as it often happens they don't.

::::Albania may be related to Kosovo in a wider context (but so are other countries in the region), but the content I was protecting had nothing to do with Kosovo, it was purely an Albanian issue. The arbitration never specifically mentioned that Albania related articles were put under watch.

A new user group, ], has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at ]. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.
::* '''''I have answered''''' ] 18:37, 18 October 2006 (UTC)

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available ] but very often a friendly custom message works best.

Howdy, I have been following events at ] for quite a while now, since I had to block {{user5|Calgvla}}, now known as {{user5|Caligvla}}, for 3RR a couple weeks ago. The debates there are very testy and very hotly argued. Editors who are in the majority opinion have largely controlled the Talk page, including liberally removing comments they perceive as trolling. There was a consensus to archive the RFC when it closed, but I don't think that extended to the entire Talk page. Parts of discussion being archived were very recent - Nixer was trying to reply to something only a day old. I think he has the right to debate his position, no matter how unpopular, and clearly archiving that particular discussion was going to remove it from the public eye. I guess what I'm saying is that I think he had legitimate reasons for breaking 3RR in this case, and the other users should not have continued to archive the entire Talk page if parts of it were active. I'm not going to take action since you are the admin who reviewed the block, but I encourage you to reconsider. --<font color="3300FF">] (])</font> 22:22, 27 October 2006 (UTC)

:I still think he was being intentionally disruptive. Another admin might see it differently, but there was no reason for Nixer to repeatedly (past 3RR and warnings) revert the ''entire'' talk page. If he was just doing that one section, I might think differently of it. And again, there is a reason that the 3RR exists: to stop silly revert wars like this; it doesn't necessarily matter what side of the war is ''right''. Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are ] to "have strong passwords and ]." We have ] our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, ] remains an ''optional'' means of adding extra security to your account. No response is a reasonable response, but I want to make sure that no response is not the simple result of not noticing the discussion. I do not add all of the pages I edit to my watch list.

Notification of pending suspension of administrative permissions due to inactivity

Following a community discussion in June 2011, consensus was reached to provisionally suspend the administrative permissions of users who have been inactive for one year (i.e. administrators who have not made any edits or logged actions in over one year). As a result of this discussion, your administrative permissions will be removed pending your return if you do not return to activity within the next month. If you wish to have these permissions reinstated should this occur, please post to the Misplaced Pages:Bureaucrats' noticeboard and the userright will be restored per the re-sysopping process (i.e., as long as the attending bureaucrats are reasonably satisfied that your account has not been compromised and that your inactivity did not have the effect of evading scrutiny of any actions which might have led to sanctions). This removal of access is procedural only, and not intended to reflect negatively upon you in any way. We wish you the best in future endeavors, and thank you for your past administrative efforts. MadmanBot (talk) 05:11, 4 July 2012 (UTC)

Perfectly fine, Mr. Bot. I've only made a dozen or so edits over the past several months, and all of those logged-out. No sure when the last time I used the bucket was. -- Consumed Crustacean (talk) 07:01, 14 July 2012 (UTC)
Actually, that comment will probably count as an edit and keep you on the admin rolls for another year. (I'm not 100% certain, but I think that's the way it works.) In any event, hoping you're well and noting we've missed you. Regards, Newyorkbrad (talk) 17:08, 11 August 2012 (UTC)
Ah. Well, whatever. I'm fine, thank you. I've been editing, just at a steady, low rate on my IP address. I usually can't be bothered to log in. -- Consumed Crustacean (talk) 03:49, 8 December 2012 (UTC)

Location map conversions

Hi. Thanks for helping convert location maps from templates to modules. A few notes, though:

  • All parameters should be converted (you omitted "type").
  • Templates should never redirect to modules. No page at all should exist where the template used to be, and any redirect templates need to be re-created as redirect modules (or, if nothing transcludes them, they can just be deleted).
  • No redirects should be left behind in template space at all, including doc pages.
  • Talk pages should be moved from the template to the module (e.g., Template talk:Location map Canada to Module talk:Location map/data/Canada).
  • Attribution pages should be totally blanked to prevent their accidental use.

Regarding User talk:Haozch

Hi Crustacean, thank you for your ping. Mind if you can enlighten me as to the circumstances of the article and its content? From what I've seen I assume that the user who created the article was probably the creator of the website where the article content was lifted from; from what I understand from policy that without expressed permission of the author himself, the article is a CSD for copyvio.

Cheers, Optakeover 08:40, 23 November 2015 (UTC)

Also, mind if I raise this - I don't assume bad faith, but if he is editing out of China, how is he able to do that? Optakeover 08:46, 23 November 2015 (UTC)
The special circumstances (i.e., good chance it's his own material, or at the very least material from an organization he's associated with) warrant some extra care and instruction to the user. G12 is also only supposed to be used when it's unambiguous copyright violation, but since he hasn't actually made a claim or contested the speedy himself that's probably fine. I've both added a comment on his talk page and emailed him, so in my opinion it's all good now.
RE: Twitter, China, etc.:
  1. He doesn't have to release it from copyright, he has to agree to relicense to be compatible with Misplaced Pages's licenses.
  2. Twitter's T&Cs don't in any way remove his ownership over his own content. They require that he also give them permission to use it, but that's all. None of the article content is on Twitter anyways, it's taken from / based on the Apache Eagle documentation.
  3. Not sure what China has to do with anything.
Cheers! -- Consumed Crustacean (talk) 18:44, 23 November 2015 (UTC)
I'm not sure about the GNU licence, but for the CC licence, agreeing to licence content on CC means that the creator doesn't give up copyright on the content, but cannot release it from the CC licence; which effectively means that the copyright claim cannot be used with regards to users of the content who hasn't broken the licence. As for China, I just wonder if it has anything to do with Tor, since such services has to be used by Chinese people in order to circumvent their internet blocking. But I make no accusations and assume good faith. I just wonder if such concerns are legitimate and rational. Thanks anyway, for your reply. Optakeover 06:14, 25 November 2015 (UTC)

ArbCom elections are now open!

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Misplaced Pages arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Extended confirmed protection

Hello, Consumed Crustacean. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Misplaced Pages:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:49, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers

Hi Consumed Crustacean.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)

Notification of pending suspension of administrative permissions due to inactivity

Information icon Established policy provides for removal of the administrative permissions of users who have not made any edits or logged actions in the preceding twelve months. Because you have been inactive, your administrative permissions will be removed if you do not return to activity within the next month.

Inactive administrators are encouraged to rejoin the project in earnest rather than to make token edits to avoid loss of administrative permissions. Resources and support for reengaging with the project are available at Misplaced Pages:WikiProject Editor Retention/administrators. If you do not intend to rejoin the project in the foreseeable future, please consider voluntarily resigning your administrative permissions by making a request at the bureaucrats' noticeboard.

Thank you for your past contributions to the project. — JJMC89 bot 00:05, 1 May 2019 (UTC)

ArbCom 2019 special circular

Administrators must secure their accounts

The Arbitration Committee may require a new RfA if your account is compromised.

View additional information

Why have I received this message?
All administrators are receiving it.
What prompted you to send this message?
Recently, several Misplaced Pages admin accounts were compromised. The admin accounts were desysopped on an emergency basis. In the past, the Committee often resysopped admin accounts as a matter of course once the admin was back in control of their account. The committee has updated its guidelines. Admins may now be required to undergo a fresh Request for Adminship (RfA) after losing control of their account.
What do I need to do?
Only to follow the instructions in this message.
  1. Check that your password is unique (not reused across sites).
  2. Check that your password is strong (not simple or guessable).
  3. Enable Two-factor authentication (2FA), if you can, to create a second hurdle for attackers.
How can I find out more about two-factor authentication (2FA)?
You can find out more about 2FA at m:2FA.

This message was sent to all administrators following a recent motion. Thank you for your attention. For the Arbitration Committee, Cameron11598 02:37, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:03, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Cartes du Ciel

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Cartes du Ciel, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Misplaced Pages. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, group, product, service, person, or point of view and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Misplaced Pages:FAQ/Organizations for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Misplaced Pages's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. - R9tgokunks 19:07, 20 February 2021 (UTC)

Nomination of Cartes du Ciel for deletion

The article will be discussed at Misplaced Pages:Articles for deletion/Cartes du Ciel until a consensus is reached, and anyone, including you, is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article.
