*I put that there. :I deleted the link in the process of cleaning up the city pages linked to from ]. I had previously added links to commercial websites in the "External links" sections of many of these pages, and was subsequently informed that they were inappropriate because they did not have a "symmetric relationship" with the subject of the article (i.e. the city). Thus, my understanding is that only "Official" links should be included, i.e. those of the city itself, the local public schools, libraries, chambers of commerce, etc. Basically, the city government has to have some measure of control over the content of the page, either because it is the official city page or the page of some organization they either directly control or over which they have significant influence. --] 18:01, 6 February 2007 (UTC)

::The presence of a list of Seneca's restaurants on this page is unnecessary at the very least and bordering on spam at worse. Besides, having been in Seneca last weekend, I can testify about the presence of other restaurants in town like Los Amigos and the usual Arby's & co. However, listing a town's restaurants (on Misplaced Pages) satisfies only the vanity of their owners. It should not be allowed and, as long as control of Misplaced Pages's content is distributed among its users, it *will not* be allowed. ] 04:43, 20 February 2007 (UTC)

:::Good point about the restaurants. I'll remove them--they always seem to sneak back in. Bill, your point is well taken about oconeecountry.com, so I won't restore that. ] 13:50, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

Moving to the Area

I don't feel like this section is very encyclopedic. Similar articles like Clemson, SC don't have this kind of thing--the address of the DMV? That was the lead-in to the list of car-insurance places I deleted, which was blatant, nn spam. It doesn't make much sense on its own. Darkspots 23:31, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

  • I put that there. The DMV is a government office, and one that is more important to your average resident than most other government offices, and one that anyone relocating to Seneca from out of state will need to visit shortly after arrival. If it bothers you that it's there by itself, you'd be better served by including directions to the police department, fire department, and city hall. Vidor 05:45, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
I think that it detracts from the overall article to have this section at all. I don't that encyclopedia entries are aimed primarily at people moving to a city or even residents of that city (and I think every Seneca resident that needs to know where the DMV is could open the phone book, or check out the SC DMV website); they're designed to give people information of general interest (which could be very specific information about a place, just something that an average reader would find interesting). I think that the chamber of commerce site should have that particular information, not Misplaced Pages. I'm thinking that a history section would improve the article, a list of historic districts and places would be good, and I'm planning on working on those sections.
I looked at a dozen entries of nearby or South Carolina towns and cities, and none that I saw had this kind of information, information for people moving to the area. An article that shows the direction that I think this article should move in was Gaffney, South Carolina. Darkspots 19:10, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
Well, I don't really care what other articles say. But it doesn't matter--I'll take it out. Vidor 21:51, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

  • Hi! I think you have a very different understanding of what Misplaced Pages is than the community at large does. To address the issues that you've raised, here are my thoughts. You feel like you own the article, Seneca, South Carolina. You absolutely do not; please see Misplaced Pages:Ownership of articles. You feel that Misplaced Pages is not an encyclopedia, but rather an "information super highway", by which you mean, apparently, a platform for unrestricted commercial content. I think the most effective way to answer your concept is to refer you to Misplaced Pages:What Misplaced Pages is not. Please, in particular, look at WP:NOT#DIRECTORY, "Misplaced Pages is not a resource for conducting business". All the content about which we disagree is commercial in nature--the specific DMV information is clearly present only to lead in to the list of auto insurance agencies, and so on. You did not revert any of my edits improving the education and external links. I'm going to revert you one more time, so you read this. And then we'll figure out how to resolve this dispute, if you disagree with me. Cheers, Darkspots 01:52, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

oconeecountry.com external link

The link to www.oconeecountry.com was deleted almost immediately after it was added to the article. I think this could be argued both ways--it is a commercial website, but on the other hand the advertising is not (currently) over the top. And it seems like it may have some useful information in the future. I'm considering restoring the link. Thoughts? Darkspots 14:09, 6 February 2007 (UTC)

I deleted the link in the process of cleaning up the city pages linked to from here. --Bill Clark 18:01, 6 February 2007 (UTC)
The presence of a list of Seneca's restaurants on this page is unnecessary at the very least and bordering on spam at worse. Klod 04:43, 20 February 2007 (UTC)
Good point about the restaurants. I'll remove them--they always seem to sneak back in. Bill, your point is well taken about oconeecountry.com, so I won't restore that. Darkspots 13:50, 21 February 2007 (UTC)
