Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are ] to "have strong passwords and ]." In particular, ] remains an ''optional'' means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

I support the idea''", i have a feeling that you might have missed or forget the case. Could please review and clarify who is distruptive and who is incivil explicitly? I'm the one who is continuosly attacked by that user, and that user was blocked for this reason . Unfortunately, I edit/revert warred with that user (i reverted to Sikandarji's version) , but never be impolite to anyone. The case is also similar in the ] article (i reverted to Sikandarji's compromise version) . Edit/revert warring is a quite different issue than ] and ], i think. I just looked my block log, and thought through my incident from 2013. I remembered that I never thanked you, although I am really grateful. I was blocked based on a misunderstanding, and perhaps my block appeal wasn't as concise as it should have been, as I'm not a native English speaker. I was called a liar by another admin who refused my appeal. He was later desysopped by the ArbCom. It took 5 days from the one-week block until you unblocked me and took flak from the other admin which led to an AN/I thread. The feeling of powerlessness and injustice was certainly not nice. Since no edits have been made to ] for at least two days, would you be in favour of lowering the protection on the article, either to unprotected, or semi-protected and just block edit-warring parties in future? I ask only because I'm not in favour of having pages fully protected for any significant amount of time - it's more harmful in the long run in my opinion - the edit warring is unfortunate, but full protection is completely restrictive and doesn't seem to have helped the situation move forward. Not only was there not another Wikipedian to double check myself, but what could have happened if I got too busy or went on a wikibreak -- and all of the templates and images for a particular day was not protected? I am writing my MA dissertation on Misplaced Pages Wars and the Israel-Palestine conflict, and I noticed that you have contributed to those pages. My dissertation will look at the process of collaborative knowledge production on the Israel-Palestine conflict, and the effect it has on bias in the articles. You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Recently, several Misplaced Pages admin accounts were compromised. The admin accounts were desysopped on an emergency basis. In the past, the Committee often resysopped admin accounts as a matter of course once the admin was back in control of their account. The committee has updated its guidelines. Admins may now be required to undergo a fresh Request for Adminship (RfA) after losing control of their account.

  2. Check that your password is strong (not simple or guessable).

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

A sincere thank you

I just looked my block log, and thought through my incident from 2013. I remembered that I never thanked you, although I am really grateful. I was blocked based on a misunderstanding, and perhaps my block appeal wasn't as concise as it should have been, as I'm not a native English speaker. I was called a liar by another admin who refused my appeal. He was later desysopped by the ArbCom. It took 5 days from the one-week block until you unblocked me and took flak from the other admin which led to an AN/I thread. The feeling of powerlessness and injustice was certainly not nice. Probable template bug.

You've recently moved the Template:COVID-19_pandemic_data/Belarus_medical_cases_chart and now it doesn't seem to be updatable, since the source code is not showing when pressing "Edit". Instead, it's just showing "Redirect category shell" and "R from move". Misplaced Pages Wars and the Israel-Palestine conflict...please fill out my survey?

Hello :) I am writing my MA dissertation on Misplaced Pages Wars and the Israel-Palestine conflict, and I noticed that you have contributed to those pages. My dissertation will look at the process of collaborative knowledge production on the Israel-Palestine conflict, and the effect it has on bias in the articles. This will involve understanding the profiles and motivations of editors, contention/controversy and dispute resolution in the talk pages, and bias in the final article.

For now the newsletter only covers general project news and is run by only one editor. If you wish to help or to become a columnist, please let us know. If you have an idea which you believe would improve the newsletter, please share it; suggestions are welcome and encouraged.
  • On 16 December, an RfC was closed which determined theaerodrome.com to be an unreliable source. The website, which is cited over 1,500 articles, mainly on WWI aviation, as of the publishing of this issue.

How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

ArbCom 2024 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2024 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 2 December 2024. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Misplaced Pages arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
