NASA stuff

January 14, 1963 Nasa Facts

I'd be willing to scan just about all of the NASA stuff if it's really only 500 pages or so. Do you want me to send it back when I am done? I was thinking some of the documents might be better OCR'd and converted to wikitext articles, if they are predominantly textual. My scanner can scan up to legal size. For anything larger, I have a hand scanner that scans a path 4 inches wide, can stitch those scans together for larger images. please delete my email address when you are done with it. Pedant 17:54, 2004 Oct 16 (UTC)

pages are in the mail you should recieve them soon. Alkivar 04:18, 21 Oct 2004 (UTC)

The package of NASA material has arrived. It appears to have survived the trip well. I haven't opened it yet, will try to start tonight.Pedant 22:34, 2004 Oct 26 (UTC)

I'm stuck for a bit on scanning, the computer the scanner is connected to has had the RAM removed, I'm waiting to get it back from Kingston. They received it on the 22nd of November, so I expect it back in a matter of days. Pedant 07:23, 2004 Nov 29 (UTC)

OK, I have the scanner running, trying to figure out the OCR thing. I uploaded this one file for test purposes. I'd like to convert this kind of thing to wikitext rather than keep them as jpgs, cause they get pretty big. If you know of any resources to help me figure out optical character recognition, I'd be grateful. Pedant 22:12, 2004 Dec 29 (UTC)

all right, I have worked a bit at it,and looks like I'm started. The front page for the archive, at present is at this page on wikisource Pedant 06:55, 2004 Dec 30 (UTC)
EXCELLENT! Alkivar 01:24, 31 Dec 2004 (UTC)

You been doing any more with those NASA Facts papers? Sorta curious as I havent heard anything in a while. ALKIVAR™ 01:02, 16 November 2005 (UTC)

yes, I have taken a break on that, I'm working on getting a faster scanner, but I will definitely follow through on the whole pile. I'm really busy these days so faster is really gooder... gotta run, let me know when you get back from your break. Pedant 02:18, 27 November 2005 (UTC)
some of this ... seems to be missing, but I don't know why. They've moved a lot of stuff from wikisource to en.wikisource, but some it is missing. I've been real busy, haven't worked on it in like a year? User:Pedant 05:33, 9 September 2006 (UTC)

A quick note to say thanks

I just wanted to drop you a quick note to thank you for your support in my request for adminship. It was certainly a wild ride, and I really appreciate you taking some time out to contribute. ClockworkSoul 16:26, 24 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for your work on the Jew template

I know it's a bit frustrating now, but in the end I think it's going to be vastly improved, and most of the credit goes to you. Jayjg | (Talk) 02:54, 3 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Nice work, and thanks

I, ClockworkSoul, award you this barnstar for your innovation and initiative in the creation of the The Defender of the Wiki Barnstar

I just wanted to thank you for coming up with the idea for the The Defender of the Wiki Barnstar, which evolved into the finest (and in my opinion highest) award that we have here at the 'pedia.

Oh, and by the way (for what it's worth) I like your orange sig and the associate image. It adds a bit of flavor to sometimes bland pages. – ClockworkSoul 14:07, 10 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Defender of the Wiki Barnstar citation

Kudos on inventing the Defender of the Wiki Barnstar. Since I think defense of Misplaced Pages is extremely important, I've edited the DOTWB page to include their citations and supporting evidence. In fact, the only award I can't find supporting evidence for is... um... yours. Could you link it in when you get the chance? Thanks! Alba 00:45, 15 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I dont have one... I never self award. :)  ALKIVAR 01:07, 15 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Steve Dalkowski

Thank you for your FAC support and for updating the table, looks good! Is it Hardcore dance music you're into or that horrible Hardcore Rap stuff they play on MTV? There's very, VERY few of us hardcore dance music fans in the US :) Zerbey 18:39, 21 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Colditz Castle

Impressive work on the Colditz Castle. I enjoyed reading the article. StRay 20:39, 23 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Signature

Thanks for voting in my RfA - but please don't use images in signatures! They are unnecessary server load. See ]. r3m0t June 30, 2005 20:28 (UTC) (reply here)

What are the size restrictions for signatures, anyhow? I've been considering using one myself. —RaD Man (talk) 1 July 2005 01:20 (UTC)
For the record i've had this conversation with the dev's ... the image is on commons, not on the en server. The server load is therefore negligible. Or at least thats the conclusion we came to. As for the other reasons listed, it neither interferes with line height nor blinks... I think you worry too much :)  ALKIVAR 1 July 2005 06:45 (UTC)
Well, I trust the devs. OK then. r3m0t July 1, 2005 07:07 (UTC)

You have been nominated

You have made a positive impact on Misplaced Pages, and I firmly believe sysop privileges would only enhance your contribution abilities. If you do not mind, I have taken it upon myself to nominate you for adminship on this hallowed occassion. Please see Misplaced Pages:Requests_for_adminship/nominate#What_to_do_if_you_are_nominated: should you wish to accept, as there have been some changes to the RFA process as of late. Wikimania 2006

Firstly, enjoy your Wikibreak; come back clear-headed and ready to edit! Second, I noticed you live in New England, and are a DJ (awesome!), and wondered if you've heard of Wikimania 2006, which is happening right here in our fair city of Boston. I know it's a few hours' drive from where you are, but if you could participate in IRC chats, or volunteer to help with Wikimania, we'd really appreciate it. I enjoy working with you, and look forward to seeing you in the future. Happy wikibreak, Mysekurity 02:44, 23 November 2005 (UTC)

P.S. I love the userpage! 02:44, 23 November 2005 (UTC)

I dispute your unsourced assertion that you ever sit on your "lazy ass"! If you expect such controversial claims to remain unchallenged, you should not use such a recognizable sig! No one even has to check your contribs to see that is a deliberately false and misleading statement. I am deeply disappointed in you for attempting to push this unsupported minority POV. Love Don't Copy That Floppy

Funny shit, I wish I still had one of the posters (the one with a swashbuckling floppy) that they sent out to universities during that campaign so I could up it to commons. Also, excellent work on the many aspects of warez (it's refreshing to see well written articles by people who have a clue). Nice userpage, too, 'cept the whole spiel about being conservative ;-P (at least you aren't a GWB fanboy). --Dragon695 18:48, 31 January 2006 (UTC)

Image:Alkivar-003-TWEAKED.jpg

I have a question about the above mentioned picture. You state it was taken by Utopium Photography, yet you claim to be the copyright holder. If this picture was not taken by you, but you are the subject the photographer has to release the copyright to you. Just like wedding photos, the married couple do not hold any copyrights, or infact any rights to the photos. Mike (T C) 23:30, 12 February 2006 (UTC)

Dude... you have absolutely no idea what the hell your talking about. In the US, works for hire cannot be registered for copyright by the creator. See this pdf:
Under the 1976 Copyright Act as amended (title 17 of the United States Code), a work is protected by copyright from the time it is created in a fixed form. In other words, when a work is written down or otherwise set into tangible form, the copyright immediately becomes the property of the author who created it. Only the author or those deriving their rights from the author can rightfully claim copyright.
Although the general rule is that the person who creates a work is the author of that work, there is an exception to that principle: the copyright law defines a category of works called “works made for hire.” If a work is “made for hire,” the employer, and not the employee, is considered the author. The employer may be a firm, an organization, or an individual.
Note the section in bold. Nuff said.  ALKIVAR 19:27, 14 February 2006 (UTC)

Paul Oakenfold

I agree that the way I worded it, it sounded like he mixed his own records. I sat there for a few minutes trying to peice together a sentence that would be both grammatically correct and convey the correct message. "Not only did Oakenfold produce records, but he also mixed them." A few too many modifiers. The words but and also are both redundant but without them the sentence is screwed. Perhaps, "Oakenfold even mixed the records he produced for others" or something of the ilk? drumguy - speak? 02:05, 18 February 2006 (UTC)

By the way, wonderful userpage. Did you develop it or did you copmod a template? drumguy - speak? 02:06, 18 February 2006 (UTC)
I subst'd some of the templates... and modified them to match the theme (the GFDL only and the Userpage templates) the rest I developed by hand. I'd be glad to give you any help you need developing one of your own if you'd like.  ALKIVAR 21:47, 18 February 2006 (UTC)

Any chance of some help?

I'm a bit disapointed by my photo of a print, it was under glass, no lighting, so the flash is a problem, I tried to photoshop out as much as I could but I wondered if you had a program that could level out the background white as it gets real grey away from the centre. pretty please? :) --Alf 22:19, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

I did my best to level out the flash, I also corrected the angular distortion so the frame around the sketch looks square now. I also reduced it to greyscale as color needlessly increased the file size for this image. If this is not what you wanted feel free to revert my changes.  ALKIVAR 22:53, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
You run a fast and efficient ship there Alkivar :) I've just been appreciating it high res and zoomed in, that's a great improvement. Thanks. --Alf 23:14, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

Barnstar

This motivated barnstar is given to Alkivar for his creation of the List of B-26 units. An excellent reference and a fine addition to the encyclopedia . Presented by Looper5920 26 November 2006

A well deserved barnstar for you, for your creation of the List of units using the B-26 Marauder during World War II. It helped me get rid of some red links on my own pet project...List of United States Marine Corps aircraft squadrons. Cheers--Looper5920 10:25, 26 November 2006 (UTC)

Barnstar

I, VegaDark, award you this barnstar for your continued improvement of Misplaced Pages

Been meaning to give you one of these for a while now. I think I have agreed with you on 99% of every Misplaced Pages discussion we have both participated in, even on the really controversial ones that I am often in the minority of. Spoken article help

Hi. I wanted to contribute a spoken article, but I am having trouble getting started. The format suggested (mandated?) is Ogg Vorbis, which my computer tells me is not available in my language. The download site allowed me to download a workaround, which lets me listen to articles using Windows Media Player, but I don't think I can record them. Is it not possible to upload an article as a .Wav file? My apologies if I am asking naive question, but I have never done anything like this before. This seems like a great project, and I would love to contribute to it. Any help would be appreciated. Feel free to reply here or on my talk page. Cheers, Jeffpw 16:00, 16 January 2007 (UTC)

Jeff, Ogg Vorbis is an encoding format that Misplaced Pages is required to use due to patents on the mp3 format. I'm sorry you cannot find a Dutch native version of a front end, but the codec has no language requirements. You cannot upload a .wav file due to file size constraints, that is the only reason. Your best bet would be to download and install a copy of Audacity. Hope this helps!  ALKIVAR17:50, 16 January 2007 (UTC)

Zanta Deletion Debate Makes the News

I'm not sure if you were aware of this or not but the Zanta debate had an article written about in one of Canada's national newspapers: Globe and Mail An online debate: What's the meaning of Zanta? He may be local, but fans say he belongs in Misplaced Pages. Section: Globe Toronto; Page M3. Sarnya

Your revert

Could you please explain why you reverted my edit here. The anon who added the WP:SPAM has been blocked for doing so. AuburnPilot 04:12, 19 January 2007 (UTC)

A reference is a reference is a reference. VDARE is considered a WP:RS, if said reference backs a statement, which I feel quite clearly it does, it belongs in the article. Whether you agree with the guys tactics, or revert warring is immaterial. A reference is a reference is a reference. We care about verifiability NOT TRUTH, a source to a statement regardless of whether you agree with what it states is a source. We do not, I repeat, DO NOT remove references even when they disparage the subject if they are included to support the opposing viewpoint. If you have a problem with my reversion, please feel free to take it to WP:ANI, but i'm pretty sure everyone's gonna tell you to leave the reference be (unless you can conclusively prove it to not be reliable... and unfortunately all the facts stated on that page are backed by numerous other sources linked in our article).  ALKIVAR04:36, 19 January 2007 (UTC)
First, I have no opinion on the content of the source. I couldn't care less if it speaks the "truth". Second, pointing me to WP:ANI is quite ridiculous. My message here has nothing to do with you as an administrator. A reference may be a reference, but I disagree that this meets WP:RS. The source fails the most basic concept: neutrality. I have no vested interest in this, but my edit has absolutely zero to do with my personal opinions of the article, its subject, the material the source backs up, or the the source itself. I did not, I repeat, DID NOT remove the reference because it may or may not disparage the subject. AuburnPilot 04:56, 19 January 2007 (UTC)
There is absolutely unequivocaly no requirement that a reliable source be "neutral". In fact, you should go re-read WP:RS we can even use EXTREMIST SITES like www.ilovehitler.com (doesnt exist, fictional site) in an article about hitler, or sites like www.theholocaustdidnthappen.com (doesnt exist, fictional site) in an article on the holocaust when sourcing the opinion that the holocaust didnt happen. Neutrality of the source has nothing to do with its reliability.
As to your vested interest, from my seat over here, it looks like you edit warred over the removal of a site that might disparage a subject (even though lots of other sites contain the same information), because you felt it was spam. A reference cannot by definition be spam, due to its relevance to the subject matter. Spam requires it be completely irrelevant... if he had posted a link to an iPod sales site... THEN it would be spam. Your misinterpretation of the rules is why I stepped in.  ALKIVAR05:49, 19 January 2007 (UTC)
If my view of the link is incorrect, so be it. But do not accuse me of edit warring. I removed the link from the articles the person added it to once on the 16th and a second time on the 19th. Two reversions on the given articles is not even close to an edit war, especially when I was being accused of being a vandal. I do not appreciate your unfounded accusations either. That being said, I do not require any further response. There are bigger issues than one link. Thanks, and happy editing! AuburnPilot 05:58, 19 January 2007 (UTC)

Protect of 2007 Timbaland plagiarism controversy

You recently semi-protected 2007 Timbaland plagiarism controversy with the reason "Libel concerns ... PER DANNY". I'm not aware of Danny saying anything about this. If the foundation is concerned about it, it would be on Office Actions and fully protected and/or deleted. --- RockMFR 21:43, 20 January 2007 (UTC)

Danny, and several others stated quite firmly on IRC that any accusations of theft should be referenced and that it should remain semi protected to avoid unsourced accusations. It is not an OFFICE action which is why Danny did not protect it.  ALKIVAR21:47, 20 January 2007 (UTC)

Deletion of Sweet Caroline Lyrics - NOT a Complaint but a Thanks

I'd been wondering if the inclusion of the lyrics in the entry for the song "Sweet Caroline" was a violation of the rules here. I was tempted to delete them, but I asked around before doing so. After finally getting a confirmation that they probably do violate a copyright provision, I headed there tonight to delete them, but I see that you beat me to it. Thanks for looking out for this. RSLitman 02:35, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

Heh, not a problem! Please remove any additional lyrics you may find (unless the song was printed/released pre-1927, in which case lyrics would most likely be public domain)  ALKIVAR03:01, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

Information/ translation request

Hi Alkivar, I've answered on your comment at User:Elian/comparison (full quote):

Another thing I find in the German Misplaced Pages is that an individual article is more likely to represent a coherent unit that will fully explain a subject. English Misplaced Pages is too quick, in my opinion, to divide articles up all over the place, frequently without creating an adequate summary in the originating article. And this frequently results in everything being ignored. See History of the United States, for example. Tfine80 23:31, 29 April 2006 (UTC)

Its interesting to note specific examples however... we happen to have an FA on Colditz Castle in Germany... their article for it was a bare stub. It now is a mere translation of some of the articles content (that I spent several days researching/verifying sources and translating from german to english...) While I agree the DE wiki tends to have a better overall editing unit, I think the fact that EN had a featured article on something local to them that was a mere stub for almost a year until it was fixed up 28 May 2006 shows that both still have a ways to go.  ALKIVAR 02:15, 2 June 2006 (UTC)
There'll always be such situations, where a foreign article is much better then the "domestic" one (especially when it comes to Wikipediae with a very low article count). Your example seen vice versa: de:Alagnak River vs. en:Alagnak River. --32X 03:23, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

I came across that article when checking de:Special:Lonelypages. It looked like a translation so I've checked en:Alagnak River and my facial expression is best described with "WTF?!" Feel free to help to translate it (because I still don't know which are fitting pages to link that one in de.WP). --32X 03:38, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

Your support of Yandman

Alkivar, your support of Yandman, particularly the "based on who's doing the opposition" part, is prompting reaction from the opposers that doesn't help the candidate you're supporting. Please consider striking that part so that it doesn't unnecessarily cost the candidate any support. Thanks.--Kchase T 10:23, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

Blocking of CyberAnth

Hi. CyberAnth was removing unsourced statements from Rush Limbaugh that asserted that he dropped out of university and that he admitted he was wrong about a statement he made. That seems well within the instructions at Misplaced Pages:Biographies of living people, and such edits are explicitly not included in WP:3RR. I suggest that you have blocked someone one week for following policy, and I'd appreciate it if you reconsidered. Jkelly 06:02, 28 January 2007 (UTC)

CyberAnth still violated WP:3RR... there's removing content, then theres ignoring all discussion and continuing to remove content. He also pulled a WP:POINT on several other articles... he needs a timeout, his judgement is off. While I grant you that some of the content he removed from Rush Limbaugh was probably a worthwhile removal, his methodology was bad. Doing something wrong for the right reasons is still doing something wrong.  ALKIVAR06:12, 28 January 2007 (UTC)
WP:BLP edits are exempt from the WP:3RR -- I really don't think that this block protects the project, and seems to suggest that people who are working on BLP should be worried about being blocked because people who don't like the policy edit war unsourced statements back in. I really don't think we should be sending that message, which is why this kind of editing was exempted. Jkelly 06:19, 28 January 2007 (UTC)
Regarding the blocking of CyberAnth, I would ask you to take a look at the dispute on the Jimmy Swaggart page, particularly regarding |this verison of the page, which was repeatedly reverted to a stub with all manner of policies cited. When asked to expalin how the policies, especially WP:NPOV, applied to that particular version of the article he was either evasive or gave som opinions on the ideal state of a biography article that isn't really part of the policies mentioned.
User:Grace Note appears to be picking up the baton on that one, and though I beleive him to be operating under a misconception rather than any particular bad faith. Artw 06:41, 28 January 2007 (UTC)
