Culverhouse Cross

Culverhouse Cross (Welsh: Croes Cwrlwys) is suburban district of the city of Cardiff, Wales. It is linked to the M4 motorway via the A4232 and is a busy shopping precinct with a range of stores

Retail Parks

All retail parks are situated on or very close to the main roundabout.

Valegate

Brooklands

Wenvoe Retail Park

Other Stores

  • B&Q (on A48 East)

Tesco was the first store to be built in 1988 which preceded a decade of rapid development in the suburb because of its accessible location. Pizza Hut is the latest development built in 2004.

Roundabout Exits

  • A4232 South to Cardiff City Centre, Canton, Cardiff Bay and Penarth
  • A4050 to Barry, Wenvoe, Twyn-yr-Odyn, St. Lythan's and Cardiff International Airport
  • A48 West to the Vale of Glamorgan ie. St. Nicholas, Bonvilston, Cowbridge and Bridgend
  • A4232 North to the M4 Junction 33 (onwards to Bridgend or Newport, Bristol, London)
  • A48 East to Cardiff West ie. Ely, Caerau, St. Fagans, Fairwater, Pentrebane

The district has the Copthorne 4 star hotel built in 1993 with its own lake and surrounding hills. Stars who have stayed at the hotel include Tom Jones and Bon Jovi stars Jon Bon Jovi, and Richie Sambora who stayed at the hotel over several days during their Millenium Stadium, Cardiff concert of the One Wild Night tour in 2001.

The unruly development of the area in truth is a disaster, the result of mindless planning back in the days when councils favoured the idea of large out of town retail parks. There is daily traffic chaos there, with massive congestion and queues. Road widening and new traffic lights have failed to ease the problem, and the development of new stores and the extension of existing ones such as Tesco only add to the problem. It has been cited as a particular problem for Cardiff International Airport, for which you have to go through Culverhouse Cross to get to. Road access to the airport has always been poor, and this is one of the main reasons. The recent sale of part of the ITV site for futher development is very bad news.

Public Transport

Culverhouse Cross is served by Cardiff Bus and First Group. Bus stops served by the 96 to Barry or Cardiff City Centre are located between McDonald's and the Copthorne Hotel and outside Burger King. The First X2 service stops outside Tesco for Cardiff City Centre and outside McDonald's for Bridgend. The 12(A) towards Tremorfa via Cardiff City Centre stops on the oopsite side of the road of B&Q

HTV buildings

ITV Wales headquarters

The district also has the headquarters for ITV television and radio in Wales and boasts a 750 foot mast, the Wenvoe Transmitter which towers above the area.
