Finding a source
Tips for finding a source yourself
Main page: WP:Find your source- Send a request to the author(s) of research papers for a copy of their paper by email.
- Check what sources are available to you in The Misplaced Pages Library – editors active for at least six months with over 500 edits, at least 10 of them in the last month, and with no active blocks have immediate access to the Misplaced Pages Library Bundle.
- Available databases in the bundle include: Gale, EBSCO, JSTOR, Oxford and ProQuest
- Consider applying for access to additional Misplaced Pages Library sources at The Misplaced Pages Library Card Platform.
- Additional databases include: Newspapers.com, NewspaperARCHIVE.com, Project MUSE, Taylor & Francis and much more.
- Search for periodical titles in the Misplaced Pages Library database index at The Misplaced Pages Library/A–Z.
- Check on Google Books, or your local library or national library may be able to obtain it through an interlibrary loan or subscription.
- Search Google Scholar for archived copies of journals in institutional repositories.
- Check whether your alma mater's library offers electronic document delivery services for alumni, if applicable.
- If the article is paywalled, a browser extension may bypass the paywall. Try Unpaywall for academic journals or Bypass Paywalls Clean (Firefox, Chrome) for news websites.
Note that sites like Library Genesis (LibGen) and Sci-Hub offer direct, free access to a large range of publications, but there are legal questions around their use and neither the Wikimedia Foundation nor the Misplaced Pages community endorses them.
Making a request
- A request may be an open question or you may ask for a specific journal, article or work.
- All kinds of sources are possible here: newspapers, magazine article, databases, encyclopedias, court decisions, laws, books, etc.
- We cannot perform full book copy requests due to copyright. Please ask for specific pages that relate to the article(s) you need them for.
- You may contact research helpers directly or make a request on this page.
- To receive email without disclosing your email address publicly, configure your email in Special:Preferences.
- Provide as much detail as possible: a full citation with author, title, publisher, and date or identifiers like DOI, ISBN, ISSN, PMID, OCLC, etc.
- Indicate which Misplaced Pages articles are being improved.
- Once a request has been fulfilled add the {{Resolved}} template.
- Filled requests are archived.
- Requests unfilled after three months will be archived.

Fulfilling a request
- Anyone may offer advice and fulfill requests.
- Indicate which part or parts of the request is being handled so others do not duplicate your work.
- Notify (mention) the requester using
{{ping|REQUESTER_USERNAME}}
. - You can:
- point to a pre-existing electronic document by giving its URL ( http://... )
- share scans of pages or documents using a file-sharing service, provided it is legal
- upload out of copyright works to Wikimedia Commons and/ or Wikisource (but be careful that this does not breach your own institution's policies)
- email a link or plain text to a requester using the Special:EmailUser feature but for attachments, you need to ask them to mail you first so you can reply.
Copyright tips:
- Respect copyrights and terms of services of any online services you use.
- Share content in a limited manner that is targeted at as few individuals as possible to achieve a specific improvement on Misplaced Pages. All content is shared under a presumed non-commercial, educational, fair use purpose in order to conduct research about topics on Misplaced Pages and/or to improve Misplaced Pages content.
- Share copies privately rather than with a publicly accessible link whenever possible. Copyrighted articles from print publications or copies obtained through online databases should not be uploaded for unrestricted distribution via open websites. Preferably, do not share login access codes for entire websites; rather, share only an individual copy of a resource.
- Remember that you take on the individual risk when sharing content, and act in a way that is comfortable and safe for you. Individual editors are solely responsible for sharing copyrighted content and assume all legal risks.

Open question. Institute of Ethiopian Studies, public domain photographic works.
Greetings! The Institute of Ethiopian Studies says they have many photographic works, quite a few that are now in the public domain because of age. They also frequently provide pictures to authors for their books, i have one of these books, but i probably can't just scan some pictures and upload it here? I have sent an email to the two mails at http://www.aau.edu.et/ies/ies-library/periodical/, so far no reaction.
● Open question: Does Misplaced Pages/or individual editors have acces to this institute collections? For Ethiopia related articles
Thanks, Dawit S Gondaria (talk) 11:16, 30 March 2022 (UTC)
- @Dawit S Gondaria: It's a bit complicated depending on what the photo is of:
- According to Wikimedia Commons, the Wikimedia Foundation's position
has always been that faithful reproductions of two-dimensional public domain works of art are public domain, and that claims to the contrary represent an assault on the very concept of a public domain.
In other words, if the photo is of a two-dimensional painting/drawing/sketch, then the photo itself holds no copyright status of its own if it faithfully reproduces the artwork. - According to Wikimedia Commons, old public domain photographs can be scanned and uploaded provided you are satisfied that the book publishers have not significantly modified the photograph for publication. The underlying reason for this is that modifications can go beyond the Threshold of Originality, for example by adding a novel colorization to a previous black-and-white photo. In short, the WMF holds that a scan that faithfully reproduces the photograph without original modifications holds the same copyright status as the photograph itself.
- If the photo is of a three-dimensional work (such as a sculpture of a building), and the photo itself would not the public domain due to age (or a defect in copyright registration/copyright notice in some countries), the ability to upload the photo will vary depending on how the Freedom of Panorama laws in the country where the photograph was taken apply to a particular photograph.
- According to Wikimedia Commons, the Wikimedia Foundation's position
- None of this is legal advice, but I hope this helps with understanding Misplaced Pages's policies. — Ⓜ️hawk10 (talk) 17:06, 23 June 2022 (UTC)
- @Mhawk10: Thank u so much for this! For example, old black and white photographs (which appear not to have been modified) in a book that in turn sourced the photographs from IES (Institute of Ethiopian Studies]], when uploading the scanned photograph from the book, you just have to add both the book and IES as sources? For Advanced eXtensible Interface This is an open-ended request for getting book sources, which seem to be quite common when looked up on Google Books, to help improve this article. This is to remedy excessive primary sourcing. Thanks, 2601:647:5800:1A1F:3581:FAF4:6129:CFEA (talk) 03:15, 11 April 2022 (UTC)
- I can access this, but how would you like me to send it to you? Per WP:COPYLINK, I can't just upload it somewhere and then link it here. Files are usually sent via email between registered users. DanCherek (talk) 12:30, 11 April 2022 (UTC)
- I'm thinking of this as more of an open-ended request for sources like this, that mention the topic. I don't think direct access to the files is needed. A list of citations will do. 2601:647:5800:1A1F:F4E8:3E1B:616:B8B3 (talk) 22:31, 11 April 2022 (UTC)

Seemed cheating to put up another from the same publisher as a separate entry—and no pressure on you, Pajz!—when there's already a similar section going. Or will no one notice it?! Time will tell :)
Anyway, if anyone can access this, I'd be grateful. Also for Óengus.

I need photo or scan (with enough quality to read all the text and to see the seal) of one page, which contains reproduction of the document, published in 1947 by the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Government (according to Google Books, this document can be on pages 1945—1947, and the title is “1947年内蒙古自治政府布告(第一号)藏内蒙古自治区档案馆”). I have found this document on different sites, but the quality is very bad (it is near impossible to read Mongolian text and to see the seal). Links to images of the document: image, image.
