What does the Philosopher Owe to his Community?
In the Republic of Plato, Socrates and many friends discuss their views on reality. They discuss what they think justice is, what the truth is, what makes for the best Government, and much more.
Socrates, to better show members in a society, brings us all to a metaphorical ship. Upon this ship is the ship's captain and his crew. The crew all claim they would be a much better captain than the one in charge currently regardless of the fact they know nothing of how to run or sail a ship. Not only do they not know how to run the ship, they claim it's impossible to learn it and kill all who say otherwise. They give mandrake and drink to the captain to make him intoxicated and take over when he is too drunk to lead the ship. They use this time to feast and drink to their hearts desire, thinking they are truly in charge now. Socrates says “it is necessary to pay careful attention to year, seasons, heavens, stars, winds, and everything that is proper to the art”(Socrates 488d-e).
