An earthquake occurred at 13:33 Indian Standard Time on 13 June in eastern Kashmir's Doda district. It was centred near the town of Thathri, and also affected nearby Bhalessa and Bhaderwah areas in the same district and some areas of Jammu and Kashmir. It registered a moment of magnitude of 5.4 and had a maximum Mercalli intensity of VIII (Very Destructive). The earthquake tremors were also felt in Delhi also. The severity of the damage caused by the earthquake is attributed to severe upthrust. At least 4 people were injured and hundreds were displaced. Schools were closed on 14 June 2023 as a precautionary measures.
Earthquake
Kashmir lies in the area of collision of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates. The geological activity born out of this collision, also responsible for the birth of the Himalayan mountain range, is the cause of unstable seismicity in the region. The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) measured its magnitude as a minimum of 5.4 on the moment magnitude scale, with its epicentre between Doda and Kishtwar districts surrounding Thathri town.
Intensity
The earthquake had a maximum Modified Mercalli intensity of VIII (Destructive) evaluated in an area around the epicentre, between the districts of Doda and Kishtwar. It was also assigned VIII on the Environmental Seismic Intensity scale.
Aftershocks
There were atleast five secondary earthquakes in the region, mainly near the original epicentre. A series of strong aftershocks occurred near Thathri, Bhaderwah, Bhalessa and Kishtwar.
