Rachel Sheherazade Barbosa (born September 5, 1973) is a Brazilian journalist. She was the anchor of the SBT Brasil news program from 2011 to 2020. From 2014 to 2015, she was the anchor of the traditional Jornal da Manhã on Jovem Pan radio. She was one of the main participants in the reality show A Fazenda 15 and was ejected from the show on October 19, 2023, after being accused of aggression. She gained notoriety for reading an editorial on TV criticizing Carnival in 2011 on TV Tambaú. She is known for being one of the voices of Brazilian conservatism.

Biography

Formation and performance

Formed in Journalism by the Federal University of Paraíba (UFPB), she worked as a journalist for the Paraíba Court of Justice since 1994 and later worked as a correspondent reporter for TV Justiça in the state.

She started working in the media at TV Correio, a Paraíba affiliate of Rede Record. A few months later, she was invited to TV Cabo Branco, a Rede Globo affiliate in the state. In 2003, she became the presenter of Tambaú Notícias, a news program on TV Tambaú, an SBT affiliate.

Rachel is known for her various criticisms on several topics, and videos of her comments have gained worldwide attention, being dubbed and subtitled in several languages. In February 2011, while still working at TV Tambaú, she harshly criticized Carnival in Paraíba. The video was posted on YouTube, making the presenter gain national projection. As a result, she was invited by Silvio Santos to go to the SBT headquarters in São Paulo.

Personal life

Your father is a retired lawyer and prosecutor, and your mother is a social worker. You have two siblings who work in the legal field. Rachel Sheherazade revealed that she enjoys writing children's stories, and one of the inspirations for her surname comes from the story of One Thousand and One Nights. She was married for 11 years to real estate broker Rodrigo Porto. They have two children, Clara and Gabriel. In March 2019, with the negotiation of Rachel Sheherazade's entry into CNN Brasil, IstoÉ calculated that from a salary of 100,000 reais, the journalist would have to pay a fine of 2 million reais if she broke the contract with SBT. In October 2019, Rachel Sheherazade had her car and cell phone stolen during an Iron Maiden concert. In November 2019, the journalist took a break from SBT Brasil to undergo foot surgery. Sheherazade is an evangelical Christian.

SBT Brasil presenter

Between May 30, 2011, and September 24, 2020, she shared the anchor desk of SBT Brasil, the network's main news program, from Monday to Saturday, with prominent journalists such as Joseval Peixoto, Carlos Nascimento, and Marcelo Torres.

Other projects

In January 2020, she debuted on Facebook Watch's SBT Mulher, where she interviewed Minister Damares Alves. In 2020, she was invited to the Roda Viva panel on TV Cultura, which aired on May 18, where she interviewed Felipe Neto. In June 2020, Uol reported that Rachel Sheherazade was in talks with Band and CNN Brasil. On September 28, 2020, Rachel Sheherazade was "dismissed" by SBT via email, before the end of her contract (which would end on October 31, 2020). The next day, she was hired by the Metrópoles portal. Also in 2020, she became a columnist for IstoÉ magazine.

In 2023, she was announced as a participant in the fifteenth edition of A Fazenda.

Controversy with Silvio Santos in Troféu Imprensa

In 2017, Silvio Santos' speech to Rachel Sheherazade and Danilo Gentilli at the Troféu Imprensa caused a stir. Silvio Santos said: "You started making political comments on SBT and I asked you not to do it anymore, because you were hired to read news, not to give your opinion (...) If you want to do politics, buy a TV station and do it on your own." Smiling, Rachel Sheherazade replied awkwardly: "When you hired me, you hired me to give my opinion." Silvio Santos replied: "No (...) I hired you to continue with your beauty and your voice to read the news from the teleprompter (...) On the internet, you can do whatever you want. I agreed with Danilo (Gentili) that from now on he will only praise politicians." This event led the Public Prosecutor's Office to file a collective action against SBT, asking the broadcaster to compensate Rachel Sheherazade, Maisa Silva, and Milene Uehara for 10 million reais, who according to the Public Prosecutor's Office, were embarrassed on other occasions. SBT was released from paying the compensation in November 2019, according to the judge in the case, there was no embarrassment.

Censorship accusations

In March 2018, Jeff Benício from the Terra portal called it censorship when SBT removed journalist Rachel Sheherazade's opinion space from the newspaper. The first suspension occurred in 2014, the same year the journalist began receiving death threats. Jeff wrote:

The very Silvio Santos, who finances the journalism of his channel out of mere obligation and prefers not to displease government officials, determined the end of opinions on ‘SBT Brasil’. The journalism of the broadcaster, known for its bureaucratic style, lost a lot with the censorship imposed on Sheherazade. She was the only voice that resonated.

— Jeff

She added, referring to the incident at the Imprensa Trophy with Silvio Santos. After the suspension of the opinion space, the way in which Rachel Sheherazade has been presenting certain news has caught the attention of the public and the press.

In July 2019, the journalist's negative reaction to hearing a news story while presenting SBT Brasil became a viral video on social media. At the time of the reaction, Carlos Nascimento was talking about Jair Bolsonaro's controversial comment about the death of the father of the president of the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB). In January 2020, he said that it would be censorship to remove the Porta dos Fundos Christmas special, from Netflix, which would be done by court order.

In May 2020, he briefly asked in the newspaper: "was it a mistake, or was it a crime?" Previously, a report had been shown with experts pointing out that the João Pedro Case, a young man killed in a police operation, in São Gonçalo (RJ), had “errors”. A few weeks earlier, Rachel Sheherazade applauded the position of minister Cármen Lúcia, after a report was shown with the judge asking for "equality" between men and women to the president of the Federal Supreme Court (STF}, Dias Toffoli. On May 27, 2020 , issued an opinion after the report on the case of George Floyd's death was shown:

Judged and executed by the color of the skin. Regrettable.

George Floyd was killed in a controversial police operation in the United States, sparking protests against racism.

On August 18, 2020, she commented on the case of extremists attacking a girl in front of a hospital where she had an abortion: "Curious that I didn't see any life defenders protesting in front of the police station, right?" On September 8, while announcing a report on Operation Furna da Onça, which investigates Flávio Bolsonaro's practice of rachadinhas, Rachel Sheherazade interrupted the text and commented: "No, not rachadinhas. The right word is peculato. Peculato crime in the Legislative Assembly of Rio de Janeiro."

Commentary on prisons on YouTube channel

In August 2019, Rachel posted a video on her YouTube account titled "Monsters against monsters", in which she comments on the prison where the Massacre in Altamira took place in 2019, in Pará, criticizing the Minister of Justice Sergio Moro and the President Jair Bolsonaro, holding them responsible for the massacre that left 56 dead, 16 by decapitation. It was pointed out by the press that the "monsters" section caused disgust among the agents.

The excerpt from the video that "monsters" is based on is as follows:

Everyone knows. Jails are a den of criminals, and criminals on both sides of the cells, if you know what I mean. Our prisons are dungeons. They are deposits of people. They are breeding grounds for criminals, inmates and non-inmates. If you know what I mean. (…) So there’s no point in closing your eyes. There's no point in pretending it's not about us. That the problem is not ours, because it is! Because today's prisoners will be tomorrow's free men and if the State does not help to regenerate these people, it will be worse for all of us.

The cycle of violence will never be broken. And prison brutality will give birth to savagery in the streets, which in turn will generate more deaths, more prisoners, more violence. The State needs to be better than those it imprisons, but if the police officer, the prosecutor, the judge, the jailer are as brutish as the prisoner, then there will be no reason for the State to exist. So it is clear proof that we have failed in the civilizing process. We will return to all against all. Monsters against monsters. And may the worst prevail.

— Rachel Sheherazade

However, over the years press reports have already shown the various problems in Brazil's prisons. The United Nations (UN) said in 2016 that prisoners were being held in "cruel, inhumane or degrading" ways.

Controversies

On November 30, 2012, Sheherazade reacted to an attempt to have the motto "Deus seja louvado" ("God be praised") removed from banknotes of Brazil's currency, the real, by claiming that proponents of secularism and anti-religious groups were ungrateful to Christianity. She stated that Christianity was responsible for principles such as freedom, honesty, respect and justice, and that the action was "at least an ingratitude to the doctrine that inspired our culture, our values, and even our own Constitution promulgated under the protection of God". She went on to state her belief that "the next target of the secularizing tendencies" would be the Constitution of Brazil, with a view to removing its references to God, and added: "But a simple civil action will not suffice in that case, as they will have to amend the Constitution".

On March 20, 2013, Sheherazade stirred controversy on the internet when she defended pastor and congressman Marco Feliciano's freedom of expression and religion, stating that he had the right to express opinions and had been democratically elected.

On December 26, 2013, a message appeared in the Facebook profile of Paulo Ghiraldelli Jr., professor of philosophy at the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro: "My wish for 2014: that Rachel Sherazedo be raped". The intentional misspelling of Sheherazade's surname contained a word play on the Portuguese term cheiro azedo (sour smell). Soon afterwards, a second, similar, message was posted. Sheherazade contacted the police and criminal charges were filed. Ghiraldelli Jr. denied the charges, claiming that his Facebook profile had been hacked, and deleted the messages of incitement to violence against the journalist. Ghiraldelli Jr. also denied being the author of other older posts critical of Sheherazade, found in his Twitter and Facebook profiles.

On February 4, 2014, Sheherazade commented on the action of a group of young men who had beaten a burglar and tied him by the neck to a pole with a bicycle lock, saying that the actions of vigilante groups were understandable, and that human rights protection served to defend criminals. The Union of Professional Journalists of the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro and its Ethics Committee issued a communique rejecting the journalist's statement, saying that it breached their code of ethics by inciting violence and crime, and showed contempt for human rights. Federal representative Jandira Feghali of the Communist Party of Brazil filed a complaint against Rachel Sheherazade Barbosa and SBT on the grounds that the statement constituted the "crime of apology and incitement to crime, torture and lynching, typified by Art. 287 of the Penal Code."

On April 5, 2014, news spread that Sheherazade was about to be fired, and supporters began protesting the decision. The rumor was later denied.
