Revision as of 19:23, 12 August 2024

This non-free media file should be replaced with a smaller version to comply with Misplaced Pages's non-free content policy and United States copyright law. According to Misplaced Pages's policy for non-free content, the amount of copyrighted work used under fair use should be as little as possible. In particular, non-free media on Misplaced Pages should not be usable as substitutes for the original work. A high-resolution non-free image is questionable fair use and may be deleted per Misplaced Pages's copyright policy.

In most cases, this reduction will occur automatically: simply wait a while and a bot will resize the image file according to the guideline at WP:IMAGERES. When an automatic reduction does not occur or a manual reduction is desired, the size of an image may be reduced in an image editing program or by saving and re-uploading a suitably sized thumbnail.

Once a reduced version of this file has been uploaded: Please replace this template with {{subst:orphaned non-free revisions}} (through source edit) or {{orphaned non-free revisions|date=5 January 2025}} (through VisualEditor or Twinkle).Fair usetrue

Summary

Media data and Non-free use rationale
Description 1951 print advertisement for Hathaway shirts, featuring the eyepatched "Man in the Hathaway Shirt" (used in George Wrangell)
Author or
copyright owner
Oglivy & Mather advertising agency (or else (defunct) C.F. Hathaway company
Source (WP:NFCC#4) Main State Museum (https://mainestatemuseum.org/man-with-the-eyepatch/)
Date of publication September 22, 1951
Use in article (WP:NFCC#7) George Wrangell
Purpose of use in article (WP:NFCC#8) To support encyclopedic discussion of this work in this article. The illustration is specifically needed to support the following point(s):

The article is mostly about "The Man In The Hathaway Shirt" character and its pretty necessarty to show it

Not replaceable with
free media because (WP:NFCC#1)
Any derivative work based upon the artwork would be a copyright violation, so creation of a free image is not possible.
Minimal use (WP:NFCC#3) Used one time in the one article
Respect for
commercial opportunities (WP:NFCC#2)
The use of a low resolution image of the artwork will not impact the commercial viability of the art.
Other information It was published in 1951, so it may actually be out of copyright. Anyway it was published by the Museum without a copyright notice. If the photo belongs to the client rather than the agency (I don't know how these things are usually arranged), the client is defunct and the copyright is presumably abandoned.
