August 9
A postgraduate trainee doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College in Kolkata was reported missing by colleagues after she failed to attend her scheduled duties. Later that day, the trainee doctor's body was discovered in one of the seminar rooms of the college premises in a seminude state. Initial reports suggested that she had been sexually assaulted before being murdered. It was initially informed to her father in the morning that she had dies due to suicide.
The college authorities immediately informed the police, and a formal investigation was launched. The police, according to the CCTV footage detained a person who was interrogated and arrested on the charges of rape and murder that evening.
August 10
Kolkata Police began an intensive investigation and collected evidence from the crime scene. Forensic experts were called in to assist with the examination.
The incident sparked outrage among the medical fraternity, with student unions and colleagues of the deceased demanding justice and better security measures within the campus. The principal of the college allegedly resorted to victim blaming. He was also criticised in social media for failing to ensure the safety of the students.

Initial findings and autopsy
According to the initial autopsy report, she had been sexually abused before her murder. The four-page autopsy report lists ten injuries, from her eyes to her ankles, including bleeding from her mouth, eyes, and intimate areas. She had injuries on her lips, left leg, right hand, ring finger, neck, and face.
A senior police official, cited by PTI, stated that her neck bone was broken, suggesting she died from suffocation after being strangled. He mentioned they are awaiting the complete autopsy report to help identify the perpetrators. The crime occurred between three and six o'clock.
According to the Wire, the victim had been on a 36-hour shift before the crime. She had called her parents at about 11 pm the night before and was reportedly watching the Olympics before going to the seminar hall to rest. The accused had allegedly entered in an intoxicated state and resorted to the crime which was described as being "spontaneous" the by police officials.
Outcome
Formation of SIT
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed by the Kolkata Police to investigate the case. The SIT includes members from the homicide department and other specialized units. The investigation is focusing on the circumstances leading to the discovery of the victim's body in the seminar hall of the hospital on August 9, 2024.
Resignation of R. G. Kar Medical College and Hospital principal
Dr Sandip Ghosh, the principal of R. G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, resigned amidst the protest over the incident. After his resignation, he said that he "cannot take the humiliation" any longer, in reference to the criticism he was receiving on social media and the defamatory remarks made by politicians. He was immediately appointed as the principal of the Calcutta National Medical College which garnered further controversy. The Calcutta High Court on 13 August had ordered the government to send him on a long leave.
Transfer of the Case to CBI
Upon the orders of high court of Calcutta on 13 August, the case was transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigations (CBI) due to alleged lapses and possibility of tampering of evidence due to delays by the Kolkata Police.
Aftermath
In response to the incident, the Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA) called for a nationwide halt on elective services from 12 August.
West Bengal
On 10 August, hundreds of junior doctors and paramedics from the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata, Calcutta National Medical College, Medical College and Hospital, Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College and Hospital as well as the government-run medical colleges outside of the city like the Burdwan Medical College and Hospital, Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital and other exempted themselves from their duties and protested for the safety of the medical institutions in the state. It was subjected to a heavy deployment of police and sparked dissatisfaction amongst the OPD patients who were deprived from the medical services as the protestors owed.
Delhi
Medicos announces pan-India indefinite strikes in protest against the incident. The Residents Doctors Association in AIIMS, Delhi, held protests over the rape and murder of the medical student, in RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The protesters held a candle march and demanded justice for the victim.
Ten government hospitals begin indefinite strike in Delhi halting the elective services on 12 August.
