Shadows Are Security is the third studio album by American metalcore band As I Lay Dying. The album was released on June 14, 2005 through Metal Blade Records, and was produced by lead vocalist Tim Lambesis, guitarist Phil Sgrosso and Steve Russell. The album's title is derived from a lyric in the song Control Is Dead.

The album peaked at #35 on the US Billboard 200 and sold about 275,000 copies as of 2007. It produced three singles in "Confined", "Through Struggle" and "The Darkest Nights", with music videos were shot for all three of them. A Limited Edition was released on June 23, 2005 with a bonus DVD of a concert filmed at the Substage Club in Karlsruhe, Germany on November 28, 2004. The album was rereleased again as a Special Edition on October 17, 2006 with a DVD chronicling the album's production. The DVD also included the music videos made for the album's singles, as well as additional liner notes written by vocalist Tim Lambesis that detail the album's thematic concepts.

Musical style

Wade Kergan of Allmusic made note the apparent Scandinavian metal, thrash, nu metal and emo influences present on the album, joking that it "would lead metal purists to call for an old-fashioned record burning".

Reception

Wade Kergan of Allmusic complimented the album's incorporation of different popular music styles, writing "these are things that shouldn't work on a metal record, but As I Lay Dying have proven here that they can."
