Carry-On is a 2024 American action thriller film directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and written by T.J. Fixman. The film stars Taron Egerton, Sofia Carson, Danielle Deadwyler and Jason Bateman. Its plot follows a young TSA officer who is blackmailed into letting a nerve agent onboard a flight during Christmas Eve.
Carry-On was released by Netflix on December 13, 2024. The film received generally positive reviews from critics.
Plot
On Christmas Eve, a mysterious traveler meets with bratva smugglers at their Christmas tree farm. Killing them to cover his tracks, the Traveler departs with a carry-on suitcase. Meanwhile, TSA officer Ethan Kopek has lost his motivation after being rejected by the police academy, but his pregnant girlfriend Nora, an airline operations manager at LAX, urges him not to give up on his dream and reminds him that he has promised to take her to Tahiti.
Ethan convinces his supervisor Phil Sarkowski to put him in charge of a baggage-scanning lane, and is handed a seemingly forgotten earbud, through which the Traveler instructs him to let the carry-on pass inspection when it arrives, or Nora will be killed. With an accomplice in a van outside watching the airport surveillance feed, the Traveler closely monitors Ethan from nearby, forcing him to cancel a 911 call on his cell phone and a text on his smartwatch.
Using invisible ink on a boarding pass, Ethan warns his senior colleague Lionel, but the Traveler induces a heart attack to kill him. When his friend Jason takes over his post, a desperate Ethan gets him dismissed by switching Jason's coffee cup with one containing alcohol. Wrestling with guilt, Ethan allows passenger Mateo through with the suitcase, which the Traveler reveals contains the deadly nerve agent Novichok; he has been hired to trigger the device aboard a flight to New York City and kill hundreds of passengers.
At the tree farm, LAPD detective Elena Cole discovers a hidden bug that captured the Traveler's arrangement to smuggle the Novichok into the country. Linking this to Ethan's 911 call, Cole drives to the airport with DHS agent John Alcott to investigate, but realizes he is an imposter—another of the Traveler's accomplices—and shoots him after narrowly surviving a car crash.
Ethan uses Sarkowski's log-in to ensure Mateo will be searched but is unable to warn Nora when the Watcher in the van trains a sniper rifle on her. In the bathroom, Ethan overpowers the Traveler and takes his plastic gun, but he subsequently arms the Novichok, forcing Ethan to obey him. Sarkowski takes Mateo to an inspection room, where Ethan interrupts them at gunpoint. Mateo fatally stabs Sarkowski with a pen when Ethan refuses to kill him; the Traveler then guides Ethan through disarming the Novichok. Ethan discovers Mateo is also being coerced; his husband Jesse is being held hostage by the Watcher.
As they are disposing of Sarkowski's body in the baggage-sorting area, the Traveler orders Mateo to kill Ethan. The plastic gun overheats and explodes, killing Mateo instead, and Ethan uses Mateo's phone to warn his co-worker Eddie. Subduing an officer and taking his gun, the Traveler recovers the Novichok, unaware Ethan has switched it into a larger suitcase, and instructs the Watcher to kill Nora. Eddie shows Ethan's message to Nora, and is wounded by the Watcher as he pursues her.
Cole arrives to question Ethan, who escapes her after hurriedly explaining the situation. Jesse frees himself and shoots the Watcher before he can kill Nora and Ethan, who realizes the Novichok is actually on a different flight to Washington, D.C. Cole deduces that the Traveler's target is Congresswoman Grace Turner, whose death could be blamed on Russia, ensuring passage of a bill that would prove lucrative for defense contractors.
As the new suitcase is too large to fit into an overhead bin, the Traveler is forced to check the Novichok bag, which goes into the plane's cargo hold. Ethan convinces Cole not to ground the flight, volunteering to disarm it on board. He reaches the cargo hold and enters it just before the plane takes off, but the Traveler is notified as Ethan attempts to disarm the bomb and confronts him at gunpoint. Before the Traveler can arm the Novichok and escape by parachute, Ethan locks him into an airtight refrigeration unit with the nerve agent, killing him, and the plane safely returns to the airport.
One year later, Ethan, Nora, and their child arrive at LAX with Jason and his family, all on their way to a vacation in Tahiti, and Ethan puts his LAPD badge into the TSA scanning tray.

Production
In June 2021, Amblin Partners signed a deal with Netflix to produce multiple films per year for the streaming service. Carry-On was originally planned to be the first film to come from the deal; the first draft of the screenplay was written by former Insomniac Games writer T. J. Fixman, with Michael Green writing another draft. Only Fixman was eventually credited with the screenplay, with Green receiving an off-screen "Additional Literary Material" credit.
In July 2022, it was announced that Taron Egerton was attached to star in the lead role of Ethan Kopek. In August 2022, Jason Bateman joined the film co-starring alongside Egerton as the mysterious traveler. Sofia Carson and Danielle Deadwyler joined the cast in September 2022. Theo Rossi joined the cast in October 2022. Dean Norris, Logan Marshall-Green, and Sinqua Walls were among the eight new cast additions to join the film later that month.
On an estimated budget of $47 million, principal photography took place in New Orleans, Louisiana from September 2022 to January 2023.
