Rizvan Najaf oglu Huseynov (Azerbaijani: Rizvan Nəcəf oğlu Hüseynov; born 21 May 1973, Baku, Azerbaijan SSR, USSR) is a director of the Center for the Caucasus History, Scientist, historian, political analyst, military expert, independent journalist.

Biography

Origin

The paternal lineage of Rizvan Huseynov has its roots in Salyan Khanate and at the same time has a family connection with Fatali Khan of Quba — the ruler of Quba-Derbent Khanate. In 19th century the most significant representatives of the family as Meshadi Samed and Karbalayi molla Najafgulu occupied state and religious posts.

On his mother's lineage, his ancestors came from Shamakhi and Baku. This lineage can be traced from the 18th century, from the period of Shirvan Khanate. In the middle of the 18th century Haji Guli was considered a famous personality. From the second half of 19th — beginning of 20th century merchants Karbalayi Mammad Guli Haji Guli oglu and Mammad Khalyg Rza Guli oglu Kuliyev, who were engaged in real estate and oil business were the prominent representatives of the family. They owned oil fields in Absheron, real estate in the Icheri-sheher (Old City, Fortress) and manufacturing in Baku.

After graduating from school No. 29 in 1990 in Baku, Rizvan studied historian at Baku State University. Having finished University in 1996 he completed a Bachelor's degree in history.
He was co-authored the first rock music magazine “Prok” in Azerbaijan, and the newspaper “Meloman”, on the same subject published by rock activist Shamil Agayev (Shaul SimanTov). From 1990 to 2003 he played bass and percussion in a number of Azerbaijani heavy metal bands.

Since 2014 he has been director of the Center for the Caucasus History. In 2015 he was elected associate professor of the Branch of UNESCO Chair on comparative Studies of Spiritual Traditions, Specific Cultures and Interreligious Dialogue in the Northern Caucasus.

Scientific activity

He worked as a senior researcher at the Institute of Law and Human Rights. He is an author of several books and more than 250 scientific and journalistic articles on the history of Azerbaijan, the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict and the geopolitics of the South Caucasus. He has conducted and has been conducting scientific researches in archives of Russia, Georgia, Turkey and other countries. The monograph “Azerbaijan and the Armenian Question in the Caucasus” was reviewed and recommended for reading and entered the teaching course at a number of foreign universities. The monograph is available in the Presidential Library of Azerbaijan, the M.F. Akhundov National Library of Azerbaijan, in a number of Book Houses of various countries, as well as in libraries of universities in America and Europe. In particular, at the, the Library of Congress of the United States, Library of Orient-Institut Istanbul, Harvard College Library, Princeton University Library, Stanford University Libraries, Ohio State University Libraries, Indiana University, University of California, Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, etc. He is regularly invited to major international forums and scientific conferences, where he gives a presentation on the issue of the event being held.

  • 1995–2003 — he served in the Main Security Department and the Special State Security Service.

  • On 25 December 2018, Rizvan Huseynov was elected a chairman of the “All-Caucasus House”, the peacebuilding NGO, was established in Georgia. The aim of the organization is to study and disseminate the cultural and historical heritage of the Caucasus.
  • Rizvan Huseynov is periodically invited to programs on numerous YouTube projects, where he conducts historical, political and expert analyses of events taking place in the world.
