The Haji Mohd Salleh Mosque also known locally as Masjid Haji Mohd Salleh is located in the Geylang Serai district of the Central Region, Singapore. The present structure is a modern building built in 1999 that was intended to replace the older mosque that was established in 1896.

History

The mosque was established in 1896 by Haji Mohammed Salleh bin Ally on a piece of donated land. It was managed by Haji Salleh and his heirs before it was abandoned in 1939–1945 due to the Japanese occupation of Singapore. After the end of the Second World War, an order was given to reconstruct the mosque in 1959. The establishment of the Majlis Ugama Islam Singapura left the remaining members of Haji Salleh's family with no say in any matters, hence they stepped down from the management and transferred it to the MUIS. The reconstruction order was put on halt, and the old mosque was demolished completely and in 1998 a new, four-storey structure was erected at the site. The new mosque was completed in 1999 and was officially opened in November of the same year.

Function

The mosque hosts religious classes, programs, and also has a madrasah. Other than serving Muslims, the mosque is also known for hosting classes for the general public which includes non-Muslims.
