NASCAR Thunder 2002 is a racing simulator video game developed by EA Tiburon and published by EA Sports that came out for the PlayStation, Playstation 2, and Xbox. It is the fifth game in the NASCAR series of video games, and is the first of the series to have a new title (The other games simply read "NASCAR" and then the year). Notably, it is the first NASCAR game to feature alternate paint schemes on the cars. It featured the 2001 NASCAR Winston Cup Champion Jeff Gordon on its cover.

Trivia

  • Dale Earnhardt was cut from the game after his death on February 18, 2001, and various tributes to him appear throughout the game.
  • This game was the first to feature a choice of day and night races at Lowe's Motor Speedway. Its predecessor, NASCAR 2001, featured both races on the schedule, but the conditions were the same for both races. (The day race, the UAW-GM Quality 500, was later moved to nighttime as well, and has been run at night since 2003.)
  • First EA NASCAR game to feature a full field of 43 cars racing on the track at once.
  • Benny Parsons played the game as his NBC Pontiac to show viewers the track layout on NASCAR on NBC telecasts.
  • The PS2 and Xbox version features the song "Sweet Home Alabama" by Lynyrd Skynyrd because the game creator, EA Sports, had just announced sponsorship in the fall Talladega race.
  • This is the first NASCAR game to include Ryan Newman.
  • Kevin Lepage drives the #4 Kodak Chevrolet.
  • Drivers Ricky Craven & Dave Blaney are absent in this game.
  • Jason Leffler drives the #01 Cingular Wireless Dodge.
  • Often at Martinsville, the computer has the ability to "slingshot" past other drivers.
  • This is the first NASCAR game to feature Busch series drivers.
