Szczytno is a town in north-eastern Poland with 27,500 inhabitants (1995).
Situated in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodship (since 1999), previously in Olsztyn Voivodship (1975-1998).
History
The town was previously known by the German name Ortelsburg, after the Teutonic Knight Ortolf von Trier (1349-1371), the builder of the castle Ortulfsburg in East Prussia. The first mention of Szczytno was in 1360 on the arrival of Masovian colonists.
