Shortcut- ]
Administrators have the ability to "protect" pages or images such that they cannot be modified except by other admins. This ability is only to be used in limited circumstances.
Policy
- Do not edit a temporarily protected page except to add a protected page notice.
- Do not protect a page on which you are involved in an edit dispute.
See Misplaced Pages:Protection policy for more detailed advice and the purpose of protected pages.
Procedure
- Protect the page, supplying a reason.
- Add {{protected}} (or {{vprotected}} for vandalism) to the top of the temporarily protected page and make mention of the protection in the edit summary.
- List pages you protect on Misplaced Pages:Protected page; if it is protected due to a conflict, you may want to list all user names/IPs involved in the conflict.
- Please use {{article|ARTICLE NAME}} when listing a page at Misplaced Pages:Protected page, where ARTICLE NAME is the article or page you wish to protect.
- Consider encouraging a resolution between the disputing parties.
- Remove the protection (while supplying a reason) once the conflict has been resolved.
- Remove {{protected}} from the top of an unprotected page and make mention of the removal in the edit summary.

Rationale
See meta:Protected pages considered harmful, meta:edit wars
Viewing the source of a protected page
To view the source of e.g. Main Page, use one of the following:
- //en.wikipedia.org/search/?title=Main_Page&action=edit
- Special:Export/Main Page
The latter also gives metadata (see m:page metadata) about the last edit. It is an XML file; tags are coded in its source, and plainly shown when rendered by the browser. However, blank lines in the wikisource are shown in the xml-source, but not in the rendering.
List of protected pages
If you protect a page, or find a protected page not listed here, please add it to this list. Please also add a short description of ten words or less indicating why you protected it. If you need to say more, discuss on the talk page of the page you protected. Also see the protection log for recent unprotections, which replaces the manual list of recently unprotected pages. The {{protected}} header automatically adds Category:Protected to the page, adding it to the Category's listing.

He uses multiple IP addresses, so blocking isn't a real option. I hope that when he finds the page blocked for a couple of days, he'll give up and go away. - A chap by the name of Rovoam misbehaved a lot earlier this year and ended up with a personal attack parole and a revert limitation for his pains. Unfortunately he has a seemingly inexhaustible supply of bitterness and spare IP numbers, and has announced, and seems to be attempting to carry out, his intention of reverting all edits of User:Tabib .
- In my opinion such blind reverting amounts to vandalism. Whatever you call it, it is bad faith and deliberate disruption of Misplaced Pages.
- I have protected the following articles which were being turned into battlegrounds by that editor's expressed policy of disrupting to make a point:
- Arran (Azerbaijan)
- Artsakh

- Caucasian Albania

- Spice Up Your Life — redirect page to the correctly titled Spice up Your Life. DrippingInk (talk · contribs) and what seems to be the same user from various anonymous IPs, has been waging a campaign against Misplaced Pages style on a range of related articles, the most large-scale being copy-and-pasting a move from the correct to the incorrect article here (twice so far). Images protected while on the Main Page
Images on the main page often become the target of vandalism, particularly being overwritten with shock site images, which harms the credibility of the project due to that page's extreme visibility. Also, it takes some time for sysops to determine what caused a main page change. As such, images have begun to be protected during their time there, and this has become a de facto policy since the second or third week of November 2004.
In order to keep track of these images, please add {{ProtectedMainPageImage}} to them. This will add the image to Category:Protected main page images. There are typically 4 to 5 images on the main page, although some of them may be from the Wikicommons.
Permanently/semi-permanently protected pages and images
- User:Lir This user is banned for one year (ending 8 March 2006 as of 10 March 2005). This user's page has been repeatedly altered to conform to the banned user's wishes without the express authorization of the Arbitration Committee.

User pages
User pages sometimes become targets for vandalism, and may be protected upon request of the user associated with the page if this is a serious problem. Clear evidence can be seen from a user's history of the page, and their history from their discussion page.

- User:AndreasPraefcke, because of multi-project vandalism of this user's pages.

Some users have created boilerplate pages in their user namespace and protected them from editing. The appropriateness of doing this is disputed.

User talk pages
User talk pages should only be protected in cases of persistent vandalism, and then only for as brief a period as possible.
Pages protected due to deletion bugs
Most pages in Category:Pending deletions have been protected for technical reasons and will be deleted when the MediaWiki software gets updated. There is no requirement to list all pages from that category here, although you may add particularly troublesome cases (re-creation vandalism of pending deletion pages etc.) to this list:
- Cantabria_Surrealist_Group. Would have speedy deleted this as vandalism (pattern of repeated creation of surrealist promotional articles) but can't for technical reasons, so blanking and protecting. Dpbsmith (talk) 13:27, 13 Mar 2005 (UTC)
