The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess is the name of the next game in Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda series. It will be released for the Nintendo Gamecube sometime around August of this year.

The game will feature graphics even more realistic than those found in Ocarina of Time instead of the cartoon look of The Wind Waker and Four Swords Adventures, although it will still makes use of the cel-shading lighting effect from The Wind Waker, and in fact runs on a heavily modified The Wind Waker engine. In a further departure from The Wind Waker, Link is once more in his "adult" form, similar to the second half of Ocarina of Time. Link will also ride and fight on horseback. The release date is expected to be during Q4 2005.

Further rumors about the game have spread throughout the internet. Digitally altered images were released depicting realistic looking screenshots of the title screen, complete with made up names for the subtitle. Further speculations range far and wide, and have little basis.

The game was originally shown at 2004 in the form of a short trailer, and a new trailer was later shown at the 2005 Game Developers Conference. The graphical style for the game, while still fantasy-oriented, is of a more realistic tone than the previous game, The Wind Waker. It is also believed that the game takes on a much darker tone than its predecessor, judging from the trailers. Nintendo is unclear on where the game might chronologically fall into, or whether Ganondorf or the Master Sword would be featured in the game. Interviews have touched upon it following directly on from The Wind Waker, but how connected it is story-wise has yet to be determined.

In recent interviews with Eiji Aonuma, the director, in Electronic Gaming Monthly and the spanish magazinge Hobby Consolas, he revealed that Princess Zelda and Ganondorf will return, the former of which being obvious. Also returning is the popular fishing minigame from Ocarina of Time, although it's exact place in the game is not yet confirmed (i.e., a mini-game sidequest or part of the larger, main quest). Aonuma has also stated that the game will be much larger in size than Ocarina of Time. Aonuma stated that Link can communicate with animals, but did not elaborate on this. He also confirmed that voice acting will not be in the game.

Rumors

It is believed by some fans that the plot will be along the lines of Majora's Mask. This idea originated with the fact that there is a very prominent moon in the background of the screen at the end of the second trailer for this game. A wolf, or perhaps a Wolfos, takes a stereotypical werewolf stance and howls at it. Whether or not this is true is unknown and yet to be seen.

Several subtitles have been rumored to be attached to the game, such as "Gates of the Realm", "Reins of Sorrow", "Honky Tonk of Hate", "Bridle of Melancholy", and, more recently, "Twilight Princess." The latter was confirmed to be the actual title on 5/16/05.

It was also believed that Link could transform into a wolf, which has since been confirmed.
