The Delhi Public School Society is an educational body in India which included 95 schools inside and out of India as of 1 September 2002. Education of students is carried out across several continents. The School is affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), New Delhi
The school began as Church High School in the President's Estate in 1941, was renamed to Naveen Bharat School in 1947 and finally moved to its present location on Mathura Road and was renamed as Delhi Public School in 1949.
Now, there are over 15 branches in and outside India with the largest ones located at mathura road, NOIDA and Vasant Kunj.
DPS, Mathura Road
The first Delhi Public School (DPS) was established in the year 1949 at Mathura Road from where it continues to operate. It started out without a building in tents where classes were held. Nevertheless, it quickly established itself in the 1950s as a leading public school in New Delhi, both academically and in sports, with the student body drawn from the quickly growing populations of Government officials' children and children of the then newly rising Punjabi refugee business community establishing itself in South Delhi. By 1965 the school had moved into a three-story building and by 1970 had a student body of almost 3,000 students enrolled at Mathura Road.
The Rev. (Dr.) J.D. Tytler was the first principal of the School. He was followed by Dr. K.C. Khanna, and then in 1962 by Mr. Din Dayal. Principal Din Dayal led the school into the ranks of the very best schools in the country in the 1960s and 1970s, and it was his vision, formed during his earlier years as a boarding school teacher at Mayo College in Ajmer, and on exchange trips to the United States, that led to the transformation of Delhi Public School into a multi-branch school system uniformly providing the highest quality primary and secondary school education. Under his leadership, finances and governance were greatly strengthened, and the road map drawn to the creation of the many Delhi Public Schools in cities across India and the rest of the World.
Delhi Public School Mathura Road is now spread over fifteen acres of lush green lawns, surrounded by ancient Islamic style tombs, and is situated in the heart of the capital, near the Purana Quila and the Zoological Gardens. It has witnessed the growth of the metropolis over the years. Its contribution in promoting quality education and enrichment of the socio-cultural life of New Delhi has been unparalleled. The current principal is Mr. M.I. Hussain. The school follows the CBSE system and has continuous tests and assignments to keep the students on their toes.
Delhi Public School Mathura Road is a co-educational day cum boarding school and a member of the Indian Public Schools Conference. The foundation stone of the school building was laid in 1956 by Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, the then Vice-President of India and the buildings were substantially complete by 1965 three years after Principal Din Dayal took over. The impressive school building today comprises four computer centers, a work experience block, laboratories ,3 libraries,3 swimming pools, squash courts, hostel facility, a gym for both boys and girls and the recently introduced public address system. The classrooms are spacious . Currently , the principal of this school is Mr. M.I.Hussain .
DPS, R. K. Puram
DPS Mathura Road was the only DPS till 1972 when a second school was established in R. K. Puram by R. S. Lugani, then vice-principal of DPS Mathura Road under Principal Din Dayal. Mr. Lugani also became the R.K. Puram branch's first principal. While remaining part of the DPS Society, the school at R.K. Puram soon became independent of its parent. It established a separate primary branch at East of Kailash in 1975 and a second primary branch in Vasant Vihar in 1986. This branch has become the preeminent offspring of the DPS Society, having acquired an outstanding track record in the academic achievements of its student body, and in admissions to elite Indian and foreign educational institutions. The second and current principal of DPS R. K. Puram is Dr. Shyama Chona who took over the position in 1991.
