The name marijuana is Mexican or Latin American in origin and it acquired currency in English due to the efforts of US drug prohibitionists during the 1920s and 1930s. Their use of the name was designed perhaps to characterise the herb and its drug potential as quite alien to English-speaking consciousness, despite the fact that tincture of cannabis, a blend of marijuana and alcohol, was then a common medical prescription.
