Our Own English High School is a chain of schools started by the Varkey Group of Schools across the cities of the United Arab Emirates. The first Our Own school was started in 1968 in Dubai.

Dubai Branch

Our Own English High School Dubai initially started with 400 students and a few teachers. Since then, it has mushroomed into one of the largest educational institutions in the UAE, with over 9000 students and 350 teachers. Till 2005, it followed a split shift pattern, with girls and the kindergarten attending school in the morning and the boys attending the school in the afternoon. At the beginning of the academic year 2005 (i.e March 2005), the boys' school shifted to Al Warqa'a, a far-flung locale. This allowed the boys' school to be run in the morning as well. Since then, the Al Warqa'a branch has been semi-autonomous of the main branch, with its own principal.

Mr. Madhav Rao has since then been appointed as Chief Academic Officer, GEMS, India and has passed over the esteemed position of executive principal, Our Own English High School, Dubai, to Mrs. Shobana Varghese.

Curriculum

The school follows and is affiliated to the "CENTRAL BOARD OF SEC. EDU." curriculum.

Administrative Structure

The head of the school is a principal (Mrs. Varghese in the main branch and Mr J T Mathai in the Al Warqa'a branch). The principal is subordinated by a headmaster. Below the headmaster are seven supervisors, one each for two grades (for instance one for grades three and four). Supervisors and headmasters are appointed from within the staff.

The headmaster of Our Own English High School Dubai, Mr. Hamid will retire in late 2007 and his post will be taken up by Mrs. Asha Alexander.

Other Branches

  • Abu Dhabi
  • Al Ain
  • Fujairah
  • Sharjah

Academics

Sathvik Ganesan S. has topped the UAE with an aggregate of 94.6% in the science stream during the academic year 2006-07. The girl's school was topped by Rajeshwari Dutta with an aggregate of 94% in the science stream.

In the Grade X CBSE examinations, the girls' school was topped by sisters Jacqueline and Christen Chung with a whopping 95% apiece. Neeraja Sankar was placed third in the school. A total of 3 girls received all five A1's and 12 girls secured A1's in four subjects.

Annual Prize Day

The Annual Day celebrations of the girls section for the academic year 2006-07 showcased the best of talent, skill and effort of both the teachers and student community. Both the schools performed equally well in high-budget productions.
