Continuity
The Titanic and Doctor Who
The RMS Titanic has been mentioned a number of times previously, but this marks its first actual appearance.
- In the Fourth Doctor story The Invasion of Time (1978), the Doctor claims that he "wasn't responsible" for the disaster.
- In "Rose", Clive, a conspiracy theorist, shows Rose an old photograph of the Ninth Doctor with "the Daniels family of Southampton", on the eve of their scheduled voyage aboard the Titanic. For an unspecified reason, they cancelled their trip, escaping the ship's fate.
- In "The End of the World", the Ninth Doctor mentions that he "was on board another ship once. They said that was unsinkable. I ended up clinging to an iceberg, it wasn't half cold."
- The Titanic did appear in the Virgin New Adventures book The Left-Handed Hummingbird, written by Kate Orman. Like all spin-off media, the canonicity of this appearance is unclear.
- Kylie Minogue's character's name, Astrid, is an anagram of TARDIS.
Pre-broadcast publicity
- The BBC officially confirmed the casting of Kylie Minogue in early July.
- On July 6, 2007 the Jewish Telegraph reported that Clive Swift will appear in the Christmas Special. Swift is best known for his role as Richard Bucket in Keeping Up Appearances.
- The BBC officially confirmed the casting of Geoffrey Palmer in early July
