A misconception is what is widely held to be a belief but isn't. A disputed fact is one where no one really knows the real truth (see controversy).
Examples of misconceptions
- America was discovered by Christopher Columbus: Native Americans were the first.
- Existance of creatures like Bigfoot, the Yeti, the Loch Ness Monster, etc.
- The ship Mary Celeste was called Marie Celeste.
- What the pyramids were built to show.
- Saturn is the only planet with rings.
- Queen Victoria was only married once. (She may have been married to John Brown).
- The world was created in seven days (a statement from the Bible).
For examples of disputed facts, see controversy
