EL DORADO

HEY THERE Argyriou; TO BE HONEST WITH YOU, I DONT REALLY KNOW THE ECONOMICS OF EL DORADO, BUT I'M UNDERSTOOD, THAT RENOVATION IS TAKING PLACE, WHICH FORCE AIRLINES TO PAY MORE TAXES. THE REASON IS, THAT EL DORADO INTERNATIONAL IS PLANNING TO HAVE A BEUTIFUL AIRPORT, THAT WILL SERVE PASSANGERS THAT VISIT COLOMBIA BETTER, WHICH HELPS WITH THE ECONOMICS OF COLOMBIA, AVIANCA IS ALSO PLANNING TO MOVE ITS HUB FROM "EL DORADO" TO A DIFFERENT AIRPORT IN COLOMBIA, DUE TO THE HIGH TAXES.

YOU COULD FIND MORE INFO ON WWW.AIRLINNERS.NET, JUST GO TO THE FORUM AND TYPE AVIANCA, EL DORADO, ETC, YOU COULD FIND MORE INFO THERE, THEY GIVE YOU LINKS TO COLOMBIAN ECONOMICS REGARDING AVIANCA, AND THE AIRPORT FACTS..

I hope this will help! ColBog

Irish and Scottish céilídh

It does get a bit confusing at times as Scottish Gaelic is decended from Old Irish Gaelic, usually called just Old Irish, having broken away about 1000 A.D. There are reformed spellings etc since the 1950's onwards, but I don't know how they apply in this instance. Here are the origns of the word, hope it helps clarify things.

From Irish. ceilidhe, from Old Irish ceile meaning "companion." Red blaze 00:44, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

The article's considerably improved, in that it's no longer copyvio. It still needs its ardor damped, though; I trust you can handle that? DS 17:34, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

True heirs? True hogwash!

You did well to spot and excise the 'True Heirs' nonsense on the House of Stuart page. It's more than silly, though: I believe this addition to be a malicious hoax. Regards, Rcpaterson 07:14, 23 August 2006 (UTC)

PS I've just reverted some infantile corruption to the Oliver Cromwell page by a new user with the the IP code 220 239 237 3. Do you know how to flag this up as a vandal? Rcpaterson 07:24, 23 August 2006 (UTC)

Thnaks for your advice; it's appreciated. For the example I had in mind graded warnings would simply not be appropriate. Have a look at the recent amendments to Cromwell and you will see what I mean. This is either a child, or a moron, or both. Rcpaterson 04:00, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

Global Tick

Hi,

Could you explain where you discovered the term "Global Tick" in reference to astronomy and cosmology? Most of the ghits I seem to be finding are related to clock events in a computer, or else the insect in relation to global problems. It might help if I could refine the search parameters. Thanks. — RJH (talk) 21:37, 1 September 2006 (UTC)

Someone else added "Global tick" to the geology section of the requested articles; I guessed that it might be astronomical, based purely on intuitive evidence. Maybe it really is a computer thing, instead. Or a spherical arthropod.

Okay thank you Argyriou. — RJH (talk)

Your Picture of the Pink Plastic Flamingos

Hello Argyriou,

If you read the: "Authenticity" Authentic flamingos always have Don Featherstone’s signature under their tails. Each has a yellow beak with a black tip and they are only sold in pairs", The picture you have shown are cheap imitation’s that look more like snakes with tail feathers. I beg you to get a picture of a group of real Don Featherstone pink flamingos, as he is now 70 years old, and my dad. The original Pink Plastic Lawn Flamingo will turn 50 this coming year, and it would be a real tribute to my father to have a real picture of his art next to it’s description. If you would like help with this, I would be more than happy to do anything I can to help make this happen.

Thank you,

Harold Featherstone

Greek ancestry I see

Your name is very familiar. Too familiar I would say. Check my nick in a Greek-English lexicon and you'll understand... :-) NikoSilver 22:29, 7 December 2006 (UTC)

I do understand. It is my real family name, though I found out about the meaning from an economics book, of all things. Argyriou (talk) 01:30, 8 December 2006 (UTC)
Hah! Economics! Makes the world go round, doesn't it. Yours is in genitive case, probably meaning "son of Argyris". "Árgyros" means silver, "Argýris" is a normal Orthodox name, just as Niko or John, meaning "silvery". So you're the son of the silvery guy! Interestingly, one of the first historic mentionings of the name, is that of Romanos III Argyros, first husband of Empress Zoe, daughter of Constantine VIII (who forcefully divorced him from his first marriage and forced them to mary), who was the surviving brother of Basil II the Bulgar-Slayer of the Byzantine Empire in the 11th-12th century. The guy was poisoned by Zoe, who was in love with someone else. His family is said to have fled from Constantinople after the event, migrating to Chios, Santorini and Corfu. Any idea about a great-grandpa from there? My dad is from Paxi, a little island 10 miles south of Corfu. Hah! Last time I bleeded it was red, though. No blue traces at all... NikoSilver 13:11, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
My father is from Dhidhimotikhon, but the family moved there in the aftermath of World War 1 and the associated wars in the region - they lived in Constantinople for a while, but I don't know where they were from before that. Argyriou (talk) 21:13, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
Hah! Speaking about Dhidhymoteicho and about blue, check Dhidhymóteicho Blues (it was a Greek-pop hit about a drafted man's solitude there -now a classic)*. Do you wish the circumstances allowed your father to teach you Greek? Your mother is obviously non-Greek, right? Sorry for asking personal questions. BTW, I forgot to mention Lesbos for the Argyros/Argyris/Argyriou/D'Argenta(=now Dharzentas) family names...
*The last verse is quite catchy: "tou paralógou i thiteía, anchoméni malakía", meaning "insanity's (military) service, masturbation under stress" :-) NikoSilver 13:16, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

Interstate 580 (California)

Westbound 580 35th Avenue

According to CAL-NExUS 35th Avenue does not have an exit on westbound 580. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 69.236.71.17 (talk) 20:37, 22 December 2006 (UTC).

You will notice that I wrote "Eastbound exit and westbound entrance". There is an entrance to 580WB from 35th Avenue, even though there is no exit from 580 WB to 35th Avenue. As there are irregular situations where sometimes an eastbound exit is not matched by a westbound entrance, it is worthwhile to note the presence or absence of entrances as well as exits, even though the list is called "Exit list". Argyriou (talk) 21:12, 22 December 2006 (UTC)
Please see Misplaced Pages:WikiProject U.S. Interstate Highways/Exit list guide#Examples. Both entrances and exits are shown, especially in the case where the entrance and exit are to only one direction of the freeway. Argyriou (talk) 21:30, 22 December 2006 (UTC)

San Francisco as a control city on 580 west

If you drove on 580 east in Richmond, pass the Central Avenue exit, ahead you would see the Buchanan Street exit sign on the left, while the right sign says I-80 and I-580 Oakland/San Francisco. Also,at the MacArthur Maze on 580,if take westbound I-580 and east I-80,you would see the sign using Berkeley/Sacramento as control cities. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 69.236.71.17 (talk) 21:10, 22 December 2006 (UTC).

San Francisco is a control city for I-80, Oakland for I-580. Argyriou (talk) 21:11, 22 December 2006 (UTC)

Berkeley as control city for 580 west

If Sacramento is a control city for 80 east, therefore Berkeley will be a control city for 580 west at the MacArthur Maze. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 69.236.71.17 (talk) 21:20, 22 December 2006 (UTC).

I'm not going to argue the status of control cities, though I think that you're right that Berkeley is a control city for 580W. I suppose it depends on the exact definition of control cities. Argyriou (talk) 21:28, 22 December 2006 (UTC)

Message on diocese

Hi there,

Just some background; I have been fixing the diocese in Ireland because they're a bit of a mess. There are links back and forth between Anglican (Church of Ireland) and Catholic dioceses in various articles--it causes confusions. I am well on the way to sorting that out.

Now, with regard to adding a country tag to the name, I can see a reason why that would not be needed. In Catholicism at least, the Vatican won't erect a new diocese with an existing name. Where I have seen ambiguity is where the reformation resulted in co-territorial dioceses with identical names. I see the issue as falling along denominational and not geograhic lines. I have started to added the denomination to all clergy and related items--though I only started Wikipediaing three days ago, so I just figured out how to do it. I have to go back and redo some of the pages I wrote up recently.

Thanks for the feedback.

Socal90046 07:22, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

You're welcome. You're right that in ordinariy usage, the country of the diocese need not be listed; however, it is a convenience to people who see a diocese name without knowing which country it is in (and the English-speaking and Spanish-speaking countries have this problem in a huge way), and it's also convenient if it's ever desired to re-organize the list on a per-country basis. I'm willing to do the grunt-work of finding the country for those where it's not listed, but it makes life easier if people adding new dioceses to the listings include the country. Somewhere down the road, that's going to cause a mess when the Northern Irish nationalists discover that the Church considers Belfast to be Ireland. Until then, I'd like to see countries listed. Argyriou (talk) 16:33, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

Kelly Ellard

Regarding the article, I guess, it could be merged with the Reena Virk article. I understand it didn't make much news in the United States, but it was big news in Canada. I live in Canada and the same province where this murder was high-profiled. I don't know what more can be added to the article, because a lot is not known about Kelly Ellard's personal life. The most we know about her is that she had a lot of behavior problems in school. She's got one older brother and her family stands by their belief she is innocent. Fighting for Justice 06:49, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

I'm not sure that the murder-of-the-week rates a Misplaced Pages article, even if it did make a big news splash. Terrance Kelly made a big splash in the Bay Area when he was killed recently, but ultimately, it's just another murder. Michael Dellums rates an article only because he's the son of a Congressman and because someone wanted to score political points in the article about his father. (If it gets prod'ed, I doubt anyone would care anymore.) If, on the other hand, the Government (provincial or national) passed some special law or spent lots of money as a result of the murder, then at the very least the case would deserve one article. Nah - some people are already close to the edge and only require a gentle push, especially if they start to study hardcore math and/or linguistics, or watch The Matrix one time too many. Argyriou (talk) 20:20, 5 January 2007 (UTC)
Could be. Or maybe he actually did discover the world-shattering truth behind the real meaning of 1/0 (it's not infinity, but I haven't managed to figure out what he thinks it actually is). Fan-1967 20:22, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

Lothlorien

It's the only co-op in the USCA with a redlink. I started a stub for it (albeit an extremely lame one, even for a stub) and it was speedied. I didn't notice there was a previous AfD (see below, last link). The arguments seemed to be that there was no info other than USCA for it--here are two more news refs. It's weird, because some other, newer, smaller, less noteworthy co-ops have articles which only cite the USCA. I don't get what the deal is with no Loth article. (Funnily enough, there is no love lost between me and Loth--I lived there for a semester to chill/escape from B-town, but since I was from B-town the elves thought I was danger incarnate or something. They wrote graffiti about me, the only Loth graffitit I ever saw: "sure, <blank> is exciting, but so is Beirut." I guess I moved in too soon after a bunch of Barringtonians put turkey carcasses in their outdoor hot tub...) Do you want to restart the Loth article? (I'm not sure of the process for justifying an article that has already been through AfD; I stay away from AfD completely)-Cindery 02:56, 19 January 2007 (UTC)

http://www.eastbayexpress.com/issues/2004-07-14/bottomfeeder.html http://www.dailycal.org/sharticle.php?id=19542 http://www.usca.org/coops/lot.php

http://en.wikipedia.org/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Lothlorien_Hall

I'm not sure - I'm beginning to think that all the other co-ops articles, except Barrington's, should be merged into the USCA article. Barrington has a significantly notable history; the rest can be explained in one or two lines.
The process that was applied to Loth could probably be applied to most of the other coops, but it hasn't - probably someone was looking for something about Middle Earth and found a co-op instead, and put it up for AfD because the article didn't assert notability. Argyriou (talk) 20:19, 19 January 2007 (UTC)
I would actually agree that most of the smaller ones could be merged into USCA--I don't think Barrington is the only exception, though--Cloyne has a long, notable history, a lot of refs, etc. Let me look over them again. I don't see the need for an article on "The Convent," though.-Cindery 20:39, 19 January 2007 (UTC)
I think, based on available refs, that in addition to Barrington, Cloyne, Casa Zimbabwe, and Le Chateau should have articles, and the rest could be merged with USCA. Or, they could all have their own articles (Wilde House is very new, but already the Bancroft is keeping records). But I don't think it makes sense that Loth is the only co-op without an article, since it's one of the oldest and largest. (And is is the only vegetarian student co-op in the country? certainly the oldest--1975. It might even qualify for the shortlist in a merge of smaller, newer houses into USCA...?)-Cindery 03:42, 23 January 2007 (UTC)
  • Also: Lothlorien was designed by architect Clinton Day, who designed other buildings on campus, and in SF. The best part is that the building was leased by some freaky cult called the One World Family--which believed that UFOS were going to bring "a better life on earth"--from 1968 until 1975, when the USCA bought the building(s). (!) The cult built Lothlorien's sauna, and then absconded to Hawaii, leaving, er, cult-stuff in the attic and closets. At least according to this: Maybe George-O has harder data/more info. (Or some leftover cult brochures :-)-Cindery 06:09, 23 January 2007 (UTC)

TfD nomination of Template:HistSource

Template:HistSource has been nominated for deletion. You are invited to comment on the discussion at the template's entry on the Templates for Deletion page. Thank you.. This is related to the recent Catholic-link TfD. --Stbalbach 23:53, 30 January 2007 (UTC)

20 or 30 at the moment. If you read his comments here ("Proposed Policy Redux"), it looks like he intends to implement either this template (or the newly created Category:Articles that could be expanded from the Catholic Encyclopedia) for all of the Catholic Encyclopedia on a generic basis based on some pre-determined rules. -- Stbalbach 00:12, 31 January 2007 (UTC)

Nadín Ospina

Hi there, fyi I've revamped this article as a stub. Please take a look at the revised article if you like Bwithh 06:08, 7 February 2007 (UTC)

Your POV tag isn't accompanied by enough specificity to allow constructive discussion

You have tagged the homeowners association, POV. Since there has been no prior discussion of the bias you allege, you need to describe what you consider unacceptable about the article — and to address the problem with enough specificity to allow constructive discussion towards a resolution, such as identifying specific passages, elements, or phrasings that you allege to be problematic. — Rico 04:03, 9 February 2007 (UTC)

Did you actually read the discussion in Talk:Homeowners association? My allegation is that the article places WP:Undue weight on criticisms of HOAs, without any counterbalancing points of view presented. Argyriou (talk) 04:09, 9 February 2007 (UTC)
I read the discussion on the talk page in its entirety before commenting here.
However, when you tag something POV, and there has been no prior discussion of the bias you allege, you need to address the alleged problem with enough specificity to allow constructive discussion towards a resolution, such as identifying specific passages, elements, or phrasings that you allege to be problematic.
Please do that.
I eliminated the specific phrasing you declared to be "weasel words," and therefore, problematic. -- Rico 05:27, 9 February 2007 (UTC)
I did. Aside from the weasel words issue, I noted that there is almost no information presented from sources other than those which see HOAs as a problem. The solution is to find sources which aren't derogatory. I'll work on that, but it may take some time. Argyriou (talk) 06:36, 9 February 2007 (UTC)
You need to read about weasel words, because you are using the phrase incorrectly. What I will not allow you to do is make massive changes without discussion. They will be reverted back. Your separating racial discrimination from conlaw section doesn't make any sense. Also, the issue belongs wtih the introduction it has. Therefore I have deleted your destructive edits, and restored the original.Jance 14:33, 9 February 2007 (UTC)

Rudeness

Your rudeness on the HOA article isn't going to get you very far. I restored the inappropriate changes you made to the Conlaw section. Also, the CAI is a lobbying group. You can call it a trade group, but it is a lobbying group. Jance 14:30, 9 February 2007 (UTC)

I'm not sure what you see as "rudeness". I'm also a little puzzled by your statements about what you've restored, as the only change I see after my last edit is to remove the "racial discrimination" heading and put that paragraph back in "Constitutional challenges". CAI is a lobbying group, but that's implied by calling it a trade association - all trade associations are lobbying groups. Mentioning that it's a trade association, and that it's a lobbying group, and putting a note regarding the reliability of the reference is unjustified piling-on. Statements by the AARP or the ACLU are just as questionable, as both of those groups are also lobbying groups, yet their reliability is not questioned. Argyriou (talk) 16:39, 9 February 2007 (UTC)

question

You asked for on this: "Most gated communities, usually called guard-gated communities, are staffed by private security guards, often with CCTV and other electronic aids." This is one of the purposes of gated communities - security (or at least the illusion thereof). Why is this a 'far reaching' claim? It is a fact, although I have not heard the term, "guard-gated community".Jance 02:24, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

I'm seriously skeptical of any numbers related to "gated communities", because the numbers I see thrown around don't make sense unless condo complexes are included, and most condo complexes of which I am aware are gated, but not guarded, even in new complexes in areas in and around Oakland (CA). Even some of the more posh housing developments around here only have a single guard to check in and out delivery people, contractors, etc., while the residents all have automatic gate openers in their SUVs, and their kids have keys, if there even is a locked pedestrian gate. So unless someone's willing to provide a citation that any significant portion of "gated communities" have live security, the "most" will have to go. Argyriou (talk) 02:34, 11 February 2007 (UTC)
However, that wasn't one of the more "far-reaching" claims made in the article, even if it is directly contradicted later in the article. Things like Especially in China, the trend towards gated communities is accelerating, in response to changing laws and economics., the whole discussion about Brazil, particularly Some even have schools for the children so that they will only need to leave the community after the first five years of elementary school., the really outlandish claim that in China, all new residential developments are required to be gated., and the discussion about bans on gated communities in Canada are all pretty far-reaching things to say without any citations. WinLIKE

You commented on the AfD of WinLIKE, and the consensus was to delete. However, an appeal has been made at deletion review to restore the article. The main argument is that sources which assert notability have now been provided. You may wish to comment here: Misplaced Pages:Deletion review/Log/2007 February 12#WinLIKE. Bronze Star

While the Bronze Star is a high level decoration, many OIF and OEF Marines and soldiers were presented the decorations, even posthumously. While I do not know the circumstances on how Pvt. Johnson II got the Bronze Star, he is not the only one who got Bronze Star. A Marine in my father's 2004 Afghanistan unit was killed in combat and was presented with a Bronze Star. User:Zscout370 01:14, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

That was sort of what I was getting at when I said that Bronze Star may meet notability. In some campaigns and wars, certain medals get passed out to lots of people, while they're rare in other wars. Too many people get Purple Hearts for that to define notability, but so few people get Medals of Honor that pretty much any recipient should have a Misplaced Pages article. Bronze Star has probably fluctuated near both extremes, and I don't follow that, so I don't know what it means in the Iraq campaign. Αργυριου (talk) 01:48, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

AMbrowser / Crazy Browser.Proposed deletion of information entry.

I just feel it works decent enough, compares favorably as a means to access imformation e g on wikipedia. That's all. The choice of browser does effect reading experience, access-behavior, and possibly "end information productivity" for the individual accessing such an information source/service. The effectiveness or quality reflects back upon the work you do in managing and presenting Misplaced Pages resources.

In a functioning "library" and encyclopedia-type setting , one could argue for allowing even a few less notable browsers appear listed; if some "less notable" ones do it better than some of the othere, let them stay on. Let there be fair information, (If all the other browsers already worked just as good then there would of course be less need for such information.)

Thanks - and let me not intrude further, — Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.217.6.171 (talkcontribs) 20:56, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

The AM Browser may be a notable enough browser for inclusion into Misplaced Pages, but the AM Browser article gives no evidence of that. One of the core principles of Misplaced Pages is that articles are based on reliable sources, and the article presents none. If there are articles in the trade press which discuss AM Browser (and are not just rehashes of press releases), they need to be referenced in the article, and quickly. If nobody in the industry press has bothered to do a review of AM Browser, that is pretty clear evidence that it is not anything notable. Αργυριου (talk) 14:56, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

From Don Jordan

Hi again. I'm sorry I haven't been able to reply to your request to have a look at the Groundwater talk page, as I don't know that there's anything worthwhile I can contribute. If you could be more specific about what you'd like me to do, I'd find it easier to comply, I think.

I want to do more editing under the Geotechnical Engineering label, and I feel I should have my name on the list of contributors so that others know that I'm there and what I'm doing. I can't see how to do that, though. Can you help me, please?

I would like to change the term 'pressure' to 'stress' wherever it's used in reference to lateral earth stresses and retaining structures. I feel that it helps keep clarity in thinking if pressure is used only for fluids and stress for solid materials.

I don't even know whether this is the correct way to contact you. I seem to remember that I got an ordinary email from you when you first contacted me - maybe I'm wrong. Anyway, all help gratefully received. I'm going to edit the lateral earth stress/retaining wall pages, and hope I don't tread on anyone's toes.

Cheers. Don Jordan.

The groundwater article, in the section "Subsidence" (under "Problems"), states that subsidence is caused by consolidation of the aquitard, not the aquifer. This does not make much sense to me, as many aquifers are materials which will consolidate, and the magnitudes of subsidence don't seem to match in scale the amounts of consolidation one might find in the aquitard. But I could be wrong, and I have not followed the literature on that.
I'm not sure that labelling all soil stresses as "stress" instead of "pressure" is the best way to go - most of the time it's correct, but, for example, "lateral earth pressure" is much more common than "lateral earth stress".

I found you are using the fair use images listed below on your user page. As per Rule #9 of the fair use image rules, you will need to remove those image. You can link to them, but not display them. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

If you don't understand why this is nessecary, you can ask the administrator Durin. He is better at explaining the problem than I am. You could also go to the policy portion of the village pump and ask there.

Maritime epublics

I wasn't sure that you had come to an agreement as to whether these should be merged into Category:Maritime republics, where Ragusa is, or whether there should be a new Category:Maritime Republics, and everything should go there. I didn't want to guess, and guess wrong, so I closed it as no consensus. Hope this makes sense, Angus McLellan (Talk) 20:06, 26 February 2007 (UTC)

Ok. I'll go talk to Thewanderer, and try again. It's been a bit frustrating - the Republic of Ragusa article is an ideological battleground between Croat and Italian nationalists, and every proposed change is not enough for one side and too much for the other. Αργυριου (talk) 20:24, 26 February 2007 (UTC)
I'll watch out for it at CFD! Maritime republics or Maritime Republics are better than the current name. Same for the mainspace articles; it should be renamed too. All the best! Angus McLellan (Talk) 20:47, 26 February 2007 (UTC)

Sherman Hall

The one AFD I close...

Here's the content of the page I deleted.

Sherman is a student housing cooperative in Berkeley, California. It is part of the USCA coop system.

Hope that helps. — AnemoneProjectors (talk) 10:01, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

Thanks, that does help. Wow - it doesn't even mention that it's an all-female house. I intend to put up most of the houses for deletion, once I'm happy with my draft update to the main USCA article, which will incorporate material from most of the houses. I'll probably not put Cloyne or Barrington up for deletion. Αργυριου (talk) 16:40, 1 March 2007 (UTC)
I agree that Cloyne and Barrington are the only houses that have enough independent notability to have their own articles. The {{USCA Coops}} template should probably be deleted as well. Mike Dillon 18:49, 1 March 2007 (UTC)
Hi there. I'm interested to know whether you're still intending to incorporate content from User:Mike Dillon/Lothlorien Hall into a future version of the USCA article. The admin who undeleted the content for me has left me a note to check up on the page since I have not done anything with it since it was restored. If you're through with it, I'd like to let him know that it can be re-deleted. Mike Dillon 14:27, 12 March 2007 (UTC)
I've copied the information I found usable to my draft USCA page, so feel free to have the copy in your userspace deleted. Αργυριου (talk) 18:06, 12 March 2007 (UTC)

Hi - on behalf of Pilotguy, as a fellow advocate of his and sometimes advice giver with regards to advocacy, I would urge you to take up Pilotguy's offer of contact, be it via email or onwiki, so that this saga can, at last, be put to rest. If you are concerned about violating WP:DFT (the citiation of which can be a violation of WP:AGF in itself!), I'd still urge you to have a word with Pilotguy offwiki (email or IRC), where he'll at least be able to have your side of the story to give context in advising his advocee on future behavoir (etc). The only way that disputes like this get solved is by engagement in a controlled situation - simply ignoring the other side, and refusing to get involved citing WP:DFT, is a Bad Thing, as it can only brew discontent. Geotechnics

I recently noticed that you redirected my definition of Geotechnics to Geotechnical Engineering. Geotechnics is not another definition of Geotechnical Engineering. Geotechnics is a stand-alone practice. Both Geotechnical Engineers and Engineering Geologists practice Geotechnics. I am an Engineering Geologist, and I, along with all other Engineering Geologists practice geotechnics. In fact, the term of Geotechnics, as well as the term of Geotechnical, were coined by engineering geologists. I respectfully ask that you return the deffinition of Geotechnics back to how I created it.

-Geohumphrey

P.S. It would have been nice for you to have contact me before making such a major change. It's one thing to change wording a bit, but to delete the definition all together is a bit much to not have input from the posts creater.

The article on geotechnics, as it existed before I made it a redirect, really was just a definition of geotechnical engineering. If you care to create an article that is more than a definition of geotechnical engineering, which includes a discussion of the differences between engineering geology and geotechnical engineering, feel free to do so. (In addition, the fields of geotechnical engineering and engineering geology are similar. However, the field of geotechnical engineering is a specialty of engineering, where the field of engineering geology is a specialty of geology is not a discussion of the differences, just a not-very-informative statement of them.)
Almost every hit on Google for "geotechnics" is either a company name, a journal name, or a direct reference to geotechnical engineering (often to just a subset), which leads me to believe that it's an attempt at a noun counterpart for "geotechnical", for times when "geotechnical engineering" is too long. Αργυριου (talk) 15:45, 19 March 2007 (UTC)

The term Geotechnics existed before the term Geotechnical Engineering. It is true that geotechnics and geotechnical engineering have similar definitions. However, engineers have chosen to use the term Geotechnical Engineering instead of Geotechnics to describe their field. Engineering Geologist have always used the term geotechnics to describe the geotechnical aspect of their field. By redirecting the definition of geotechnics to geotechnical engineering, you have essentially said that geotechnics is not part of engineering geology, since in most States, geologists can not practice engineering without being a PE. However geotechnics is considered part of the practice of engineering geology in those States that regulate engineering geologists. The term geotechnics was coined by geologists, and we use the term more often than engineers do. If you want to redirect the definition anywhere you should redirect it to Engineering Geology. Essentially, Geotechnics is a Geology word, and for you to assume otherwise implies some lack of knowlege on your part of the history of the term. The term Geotechnics is a stand-along term in most geology and geotechnical engineering glossaries, and should be a stand-along term here on Misplaced Pages. I have reinstated Geotechnics as a stand-along definition, and would appreciate it if you do not redirect it again. My definition is accurate, with adequate references, and I have provided links to both Geotechnical Engineering and Engineering Geology if the reader would like additional information. Misplaced Pages is about providing information, not limiting it. I believe that you have abused your authority as an editer by essentially deleting a well established definitions. If you don't like my definition, you may edited it as you wish, provided that you have adequate references to back up your changes.

McCarthy, McCarthyism

I am inviting all recent editors of Joseph McCarthy to comment on a current dispute. User:KarlBunker, in his stated view out of concern for WP:NPOV#Undue weight, has reverted, deleted, and selectively reinstated factually accurate sourced information that I have added. I contend he is in error. Please see the discussion at Talk:Joseph McCarthy. Thank you. Kaisershatner 17:38, 17 March 2007 (UTC)

That entire page is a disaster. It's mostly a hit piece on Senator McCarthy. It's full of lies and distortions. It needs to be completely re-written. The problem is that there a a few editors that refuse to allow any kind of sources that are not left-wing. I had to fight just to get William Buckley's book, McCarthy & His Enemies listed as a reference. It kept getting deleted. Also, the "Ongoing Debate" section is incomplete and misleading. There are many people who were correctly identified by McCarthy as security risks that this section ignores. What a mess. Jtpaladin 17:14, 17 May 2007 (UTC)

Viadeo, redux

Regarding the previous string of comments on Viadeo:

The article on Workspace Group was an intranet intended for Workspace Group clients. I had no idea that this was referenced on the public internet until the assertion of a copyright violation on Misplaced Pages. I will add my name to this article.

We have recently had a series of press articles in the UK of late - blogs such as the Guardian. Press articles in themselves do not prove we haev one million members across Europe - the only way I can prove this is to show you confidential info on our membership database which obviously I can't do.

I will try once more to re-write the article in an even more bland format. I would not mind adverse comments on the page but merely pulling it off the site four times is really very annoying!

Peter Cunningham — Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.236.135.147 (talkcontribs) 07:24, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

The most important thing you can do to prevent the article from being deleted again is to include references to independent sources which discuss Viadeo - has any sort of trade press covered Viadeo? Occidental Quarterly

How do you suggest it be characterized? When the label "white nationalist" is used, it is yanked as NPOV violation; when I tried a less controversial "ultraconservative," you yanked it with a comment I don't understand. Do we just let it lie there with no description of the source (unlike most of the links on that list)? --Orange Mike 00:03, 29 March 2007 (UTC)

Sorry for not replying earlier. Given evidence that Occidental Quarterly may not be wholly white-nationalist, I made sure to place the author's name in the reference, as Kevin MacDonald is a white nationalist, as the article on him makes clear. This information seems to be controlled by a specific user. I notice through Google searching that you have singled out the same user for "vandalism" and threatened to have her blocked. I do not have time for getting involved in all the politics and intrigue of Misplaced Pages, but I would like your advice outside of the usual in-house channels. Munsell color system

Hi there Αργυριου. I've been doing my best to fix up the Munsell color system article, but it still has quite a ways to go. I'm wondering if you have any thoughts on the progress so far. Feel free to respond at talk:Munsell color system if you like. Also, MWAK wants to include criticism of the Munsell system’s three-dimensional perceptual uniformity. I'm going to try to work that in as the History/Influences section is filled out (and perhaps split into 2-3 sections). He also has some criticisms about color names. Maybe you can figure out what he's getting at there—it's a mystery to me. Cheers, jacobolus (t) 08:00, 22 April 2007 (UTC)

The changes you've made seem pretty good. I don't really know enough about the subject to contribute much to the article, though I've used the Munsell soil color charts in my job. MWAK needs to be able to phrase the criticism of the Munsell system in a way which is understandable to the lay reader, and provide references which actually support his claims. I have read elsewhere that preceptual differences are not uniform across the color solid, though reducing those non-uniformities was what drove the two major recalibrations of the Munsell system. I think it would be perfectly fair to include a criticism along those lines, with a reference to a work which shows those perceptual non-uniformities.
One other possible critique is that four of the five primaries ought to correspond to the colors of peak sensitivity in the eye's cone cells. Munsell blue does not fit that criterion, but I'm not sure that's a valid critique, because the brain may adjust the perception so that the equal perceptual differences do not match the eye's "primary" colors plus purple. For that matter, having 5 primary colors doesn't match the physiological structure of color response, because the eyes have 4 sensitivity peaks, not 5. That's not what Munsell was trying to match. grading

Hi,

My source for the poorly-graded == well-sorted argument (and vice versa) is from both what I learned (also, for example here, here, here (PDF), and many other hits through Google scholar). Are you sure about this? (It would be nice to have a Grading (sediment) article to "sort" out the various engineering definitions, since I've never heard of "gap grading" until today). +mwtoews 21:16, 10 May 2007 (UTC)

Gap-graded soils are not terribly common, but do exist. Many beach sands have a large number of particles in the range of 0.5 to 1mm, and a small but noticeable amount of particles in the 5mm+ size, with almost nothing between 1mm and 5mm. That's "poorly sorted", but also "poorly graded". You (and Britannica) are correct in thinking that generally well-graded is poorly-sorted and vice-versa, but it's not an exact relation. Furthermore, the criteria for "well-graded" in the USCS are pretty stringent; there are probably many sands which don't quite meet the USCS criteria for "well-graded", but which are also not "well-sorted" in a sedimentology sense. A former boss of mine ended up running 400 sieve analyses on natural sands from near the All-American Canal in Southern California. 397 of the sands were "poorly graded" by USCS criteria; only 3 passed the requirements for SW. I'm sure a sedimentologist would find many more than 3 of those samples to be "poorly sorted". Αργυριου (talk) 23:54, 10 May 2007 (UTC)
I figured there might have been grey-area between poorly-graded and well-sorted, so I'll start a Grading (sediment) (someday, not now; or you could start) where those comparisons can be formally established. Thanks for clearing that up. +mwtoews 02:06, 11 May 2007 (UTC)
If I may jump in, when I worked at an engineering company (with lab), of the thousands of sieve analysis performed there, only a handful were ever classified as well-graded using the ASTM (USCS) criteria. As a result, in my professional experience the defacto field characterization under ASTM D-2488 is poorly-graded blah-blah-blah, and you would need sieve analysis data to back up a well-graded description. However, no one is stopping you from saying in the formal description (and it is even encouraged to say) that a soil is fine-grained, fine to coarse-grained, etc.. Likewise, it is best field practice to provide percentages of fines/sands/gravels such as 8/91/1 to more clearly describe strata. But I guess now I'm going too far into the nitty gritty of actual practice of "grading(soils".... Drillerguy 16:35, 14 May 2007 (UTC)

soil article

Hello Argyriou,

I hope that you can help add a geotechs perspective to the soil article which, although it has reached GA status has no mention of any science other than the narrow domain of the "soil scientist". This isn't a put-down of soil scientists, only that the topic needs a broader description.

Thank you for your good work on geotech related articles, I would welcome your further work on cone penetration testing, which I know a little about (since it is my business), but the article still needs help.... Drillerguy 16:37, 14 May 2007 (UTC)

Irish dance and Irish stepdance

Thank you for the head's up. However, the things that I add should not be omitted from the article in my opinion. As a competitive Irish dancer for 8 uninterrupted years at the World Championships, small details about dress do not take away from the article. People saying kilts are still worn and other small details are updated by me and don't pose a threat to the article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lostinletterkenny (talkcontribs) 08:29, 22 May 2007 (UTC)
Actually, they do. They clutter up a broad survey article about four different kinds of dancing with trivial details about one particular kind, when the article doesn't go into nearly the detail about the other three. Fixing those details in the Irish stepdance article is definitely worthwhile; as that article is just about stepdance, going into detail there is much more worthwhile.
Oh, and I don't really care how much stepdancing you've done, I just wanted to establish that I also have been (recently) a competitive dancer instead of some outsider who's just copying stuff on other people's websites. Αργυριου (talk) 18:18, 22 May 2007 (UTC)

Homeowner Associations

Hey Argyriou,

I want to help you edit the entry on homeowner associations. The article is badly slanted towards anti-hoa sentiments, and I would like to tip that scale back towards neutrality. I work for an organization in California that educates homeowners in common interest developments (a non-profit), so I am familiar with the subject.

Since I'm new to WP editing, I want to avoid making a terrible faux pas if possible. I have already added a link to my organization (the Executive Council of Homeowners). While there are many useful links on the site, I would be happy to take it down if the majority of the website seems too commercial.

I personally would never want to live in an HOA. They are fraught with problems, but not enough to completely demonize the whole system.

Is there a way that I can weigh in to stop the onslaught of non-neutral contributions?

Sincerest form of flattery?

You should be aware that User:Putzin has been posted a message to my user page and attached your signature, rather than his own. A brief look at user conduct policies did not show me which rue he has thus violated, but I am sure the Wikipolicy somewhere must proscribe such fraudulent activity. Could you please either direct me to the location or bring the matter to an admin's attention. Thanks. Kevin McE 07:16, 30 June 2007 (UTC)

Husond RfB

Alansohn - I've reverted your edit, as something you did erased three previous comments, including mine. Please feel free to re-add your opposition of Husond without eliminating other's contributions. User:Argyriou (talk) 20:29, 6 July 2007 (UTC)

  • My apologies. This is not teh first time that this has happened, where I thought I was editing the current version and an older version was pulled up without any warning displayed. Sorry for any confusion. Alansohn 20:34, 6 July 2007 (UTC)

My RFA

Can you explain to me why I'm conterveral in my RFA so I can learn. Thanks Jaranda 20:39, 6 July 2007 (UTC)

You said you considered MONGO and SlimVirgin role models. I consider them very poor role models, as they are constantly getting involved in controversy over their actions and manner. If you're going to be like them, I don't want you to have admin tools. User:Argyriou (talk) 20:49, 6 July 2007 (UTC)
I'm not like them though, and I don't deal with what they do. I consider them as role models because they went through alot of abuse and survived it. Assume good faith. Thanks Jaranda 22:02, 6 July 2007 (UTC)
After a number of experiences, I no longer assume good faith on the part of administrators or admin candidates. If it were practical to remove bad admins, I'd be much less hesitant about promoting people who I have any hesitation about. But since it's essentially impossible to remove an admin, no matter how abusive they become, I'm generally inclined to oppose anyone I'm not solidly trusting of. Stepahns RFA

You're welcome to your RFA vote, of course, but I'm curious about I also have concerns about his civility - I find this a very strange comment, as I've found Stephan to be one of the most polite of all of us. Do you really support this comment? William M. Connolley 21:58, 17 July 2007 (UTC)

Looking at his talk page, I saw a conversation which concerned me a little. It's not a big thing, and alone is not enough for me to oppose him. I struck out that portion of the comment after re-reading his talk page, as I'd misinterpreted it on a skim through the first time. User:Argyriou (talk) 23:54, 17 July 2007 (UTC)
OK, thanks William M. Connolley 08:39, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

Letter Frequencies

Hemingway and Faulkner were already mentioned in the article. Counting letters in a novel is hardly original research. In fact it is simply quoting the novel's content. The section was an example of fact not a thesis paper of opinions. Above all, it added to article because it was pure facts and that is the basis for wikipedia. Mangledorf 22:33, 17 July 2007 (UTC)

Northern Cyprus exists?

So you are Greek and admit that this satellite state EXISTS as a country? What kind of Greek are you? I'm pretty sure you don't have a damn idea on what happened there in 1974. Shame on you.. --KaragouniS 18:07, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

I'm Greek, which means that I'm intelligent enough to recognize what happens in the real world. Are you? Argyriou (talk) 19:00, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
Take a look in Solomos Solomou and Tassos Isaac articles. THIS IS what you recognize. I know my nation's history. But do YOU? --KaragouniS 20:56, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
To answer my previous question, you obviously don't. The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus really does exist, out there in the real world, no matter what bloviations are emitted from the talking shops in Brussels and Turtle Bay, and no matter how criminal the people who run the place are. Your reply makes it obvious your education never included the difference between de facto and de jure. I suggest you remedy that deficiency. Argyriou (talk) 21:00, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
Nomizis oti eise eksipnos, e filarako?--KaragouniS 21:28, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
Its funny don't you think? You don't even speak your language. And you tried to tell me about GREEK history. Isn't it ironic? Οταν μαθεις ελληνικα τοτε να μου κανεις υποδειξεις. Καλο βραδυ. --KaragouniS 11:09, 19 July 2007 (UTC)

You've worn out your welcome. Go away, and don't ever post on my talk page again. Any further posting here by you will be reported as vandalism. Argyriou (talk) 18:00, 19 July 2007 (UTC)

Hehe this is what I call "truth hurts". You don't deserve to call yourself Greek as far as you don't even try to learn our goddamn holy language. And by the way, you have no right to tell me what to do. See ya around :) --KaragouniS 21:56, 19 July 2007 (UTC)
