The League of Copyeditors is a group of copy-editors who target the substantial backlog of articles requiring copyediting. The League edits these articles to improve style (including grammar, punctuation and diction) and formatting (including capitalization and wikification).

The following tag indicates that an article requires copy-editing:

This article may require copy editing for grammar, style, cohesion, tone, or spelling. You can assist by editing it. (Learn how and when to remove this message)

The League aims to improve all such articles to a standard meriting the removal of the tag.

Objectives

The League aims to:

• reduce the backlog to a manageable level;
• tag articles in need of copyediting;
• process difficult articles; and
• assure excellence by copyediting, then proofreading, each article in the backlog.

Tasks

1. Patrol the copyedit backlog.

• Copyedit any article on the list.
• Remove the copyedit tag ({{copyedit}}).
• Post the article on Misplaced Pages:WikiProject League of Copyeditors/proofreading in the "Articles ready for final proofread" section.

1. Recruit new members to help tackle the ever growing number of articles in need of copyediting.
2. Proofread each article after it receives a copyedit from a League member (particularly when the article is lengthy or difficult). See Misplaced Pages:WikiProject League of Copyeditors/proofreading for proofreading status.
3. Lend your expertise to the group by searching through the "Requests for copy-editing assistance" and "In Progress" sections to see if you can provide additional help.
4. If you have knowledge in some topics, list them on your user page under the heading "areas of interest/expertise". League members who need assistance editing a particular topic may refer to your user page and ask you for help.

How to request a copy-edit

If you want us to copy-edit a specific article, please follow these instructions:

• If the article is in the FAC or FAR process and copy-editing/prose is the only remaining objection, list the article at the bottom of our "Copy-edit requests for FAC and FAR articles" section of our proofreading page. If there are other objections (references, etc.), please do not list your article until they are resolved.

• Otherwise, add the article to the bottom of the "Copy-edit requests for other articles" section of our proofreading page.

How to use templates for copy-editing

Before copy-editing an article

Insert the following template at the top of the article page before making an edit to avoid edit conflicts. Remember to save immediately so that the template shows to all users. Remove the template after you have finished copyediting the article.

This page was last edited at 06:39, 22 July 2007 (UTC) (17 years ago) – this estimate is cached, update. Please remove this template if this page hasn't been edited for a significant time. If you are the editor who added this template, please be sure to remove it or replace it with {{Under construction}} between editing sessions.

If the copyedit is extensive and must continue over more than one session, place the following template at the top of the article discussion page. Remove the template after you have finished copyediting the article.

After copy-editing an article

Add the following code as a comment at the bottom of the article's talk page. There is no need to substitute the current month name and year, the code does this automatically.

After proofreading a copy-edited article

Edit the comment of the copy-editor on the article discussion page by adding |~~~~ as another parameter.

For example, you would change this:

Announcements

February participation drive

We've started a participation drive for the remainder of February. Help clear the backlog by adopting the following goals each week:

• Select an article to copyedit from the backlog. After your copyedit, list the article in the ready for final proofread section.
• Select a different article to proof from the ready for final proofread section.
