Xirrus, Inc is a Wi-Fi technology company based in Westlake Village, California that designs and sells wireless networking equipment based on the IEEE standards 802.11a, 802.11b, and 802.11g. Unlike traditional Wi-Fi architectures that utilize omni-directional access points linked to Wi-Fi controllers in IT closets, the Xirrus architecture integrates the Wi-Fi controller, multiple 2.4GHz and 5GHz radios, and a sector antenna system into a single wireless LAN device known as a Wi-Fi Array. Xirrus claims that by integrating these components into a single device at the edge of the network, IT managers will get greater throughput and support more users capacity of Wi-Fi-enabled computers, phones, cameras, printers, etc.
History
Xirrus was founded in 2003 by Dirk Gates, Patrick Parker, and Steve DeGennaro. Mr. Gates founded Xircom in 1988 and grew the company to 2,500 employees with a market cap in excess of $2B. Subsequently, Mr. Gates negotiated the sale of Xircom to Intel Corp. in March of 2001 for $748. In 2003, Mr. Gates brought together the VP of Engineering at Xircom, Patrick Parker (serving as CEO of Nomadix) and the CFO at Xircom, Steve DeGenarro (serving as CFO of Calix) to establish Xirrus.
