U.S. Route 197 is a spur of U.S. Highway 97. The signed portion of the route runs for 82 miles (132 km) from Dallesport, Washington at State Route 14 to Shaniko Junction, Oregon at U.S. Highway 97, 12 miles southwest of Shaniko. It passes through the states of Washington and Oregon.
Prior to 1968 (when U.S. Highway 830 was deleted), U.S. 197 continued east (sharing an alignment with 830) for 18 more miles until a junction with U.S. Highway 97 near Maryhill, Washington. This portion of U.S. 197 was no longer signed when US 830 was deleted; however it was not removed from the relevant route logs until October, 2006.
Route description
Oregon
The Oregon section of U.S. 197 is designated as part of the The Dalles-California Highway (Highway 4). Branching from U. S. 97 south of Shaniko, U. S. 197 runs northwest, crossing the Deschutes River at Maupin in a dramatic winding river crossing. About two miles west of Maupin U.S. 197 intersects Oregon Route 216 (Wapinitia Highway) and overlaps it north to Tygh Valley. The concurrency ends at Tygh Valley where the historic Oregon Route 216 (now known as the Sherars Bridge Highway), turns east to Sherar's Bridge and Grass Valley. Remaining west of the Deschutes River U. S. 197 crests the Tygh Grade 6.5 miles north of Tyge Valley and then proceeds north down the slope of the Columbia River Gorge through Dufur to the city of The Dalles and thence to The Dalles Bridge and on to Washington.
Washington
Legally, the Washington section of U.S. 197 is defined at Washington Revised Code § 47.17.382. It includes just the short connection from The Dalles Bridge to State Route 14.
This section needs expansion. You can help by adding to it. |
