Military unit
The 56th Illinois Infantry was an Union Army regiment from Illinois during the Civil War . The regiment was established in 1862 and it made up of soldiers from the counties of Massac , Pope , Hamilton , Franklin and Wayne . Immediately after the Regiment was mustered into service at Camp Mather , General Grant ordered it to Paducah, Kentucky .
