This is a list of fictional characters in the manga and anime series Death Note. The character names are listed in Western order, with the given name before the family name.

Light Yagami (夜神 月, Yagami Raito) is the protagonist and anti-villain of the series. At the start of the series, he discovers the Death Note and uses it to kill criminals, becoming known to the people of Japan as Kira (based on the Japanese pronunciation of the English word "killer"). He is voiced by Mamoru Miyano in the Japanese anime and by Brad Swaile in the English dub. In the live-action film, he is played by Tatsuya Fujiwara.

Light Yagami is characterized as an extremely intelligent but bored young man. He is confident of his own intelligence and how smart he is in relation to others, but is rarely overconfident in his own abilities. Being a genius, Light feels that only he is fit to judge humanity and steer it on a proper moral course, viewing himself as the "god" of the new world he is creating. In the film, Light's motives differ; his boredom trait does not exist, and he instead uses the Death Note out of frustration from the perceived failures of the Japanese justice system. Light, prior to his discovery of the Death Note, hacks into the government database and finds that the government secretly acknowledges that many criminals are unable to be prosecuted.

Light's immediate family is his father, Soichiro Yagami, a member of the investigation team opposing Kira; his mother, Sachiko Yagami; and his younger sister, Sayu Yagami. His blood type is A (see Japanese blood type theory of personality). His name is a play on the theme of good and evil in the series, as Light — an unusual pronunciation of the kanji for "moon," normally pronounced tsuki — is his given name, and Yagami is written with the kanji for "night" and "god".

Light was the junior high school tennis champion in 1999 and 2000; after his 2000 victory, Light quit tennis as he entered high school. At the start of the series, he is a third year high school student (12th Grade) at Daikoku Private Academy (大国学園, Daikoku Gakuen) who also attends supplemental classes at Gamou Prep Academy. In Spring 2004, Light becomes a first-year student (freshman) at To-Oh University (東応大学, Tōō Daigaku), becoming one of two freshman representatives, L being the other. In the film, Light is a first-year university student studying Law, instead of still being a high school genius.

Shortly after gaining the Death Note from its owner, Ryuk, Light sets to work ridding the world of criminals. He has them all die of heart attacks so people realize the deaths are deliberate, attracting the attention of the master detective L. Though Light is able to avoid suspicion initially, he becomes a suspect after killing Raye Penber, an FBI agent assigned to follow him by L. With the introduction of the second Kira, Misa Amane, L is finally able to corner him. Light hides one of the Death Notes and delivers the second to Kyosuke Higuchi, making him the third Kira. By doing this, both he and Misa have their memories erased. Now unaware of his time as Kira, Light joins L in hunting the latest Kira. Upon capturing Higuchi and regaining the Death Note, Light's memories are temporarily restored. Light then kills Higuchi to permanently secure his memories. Light manipulates Rem into killing L, using her concern for Misa to convince her that L's death will keep Misa out of danger.

With L dead, Kira takes up his mantle to keep the world in the dark about L's death, becoming the second L while putting him in the perfect position to continue killing criminals. He comes into conflict with L's true successor, Near, during this time. Near quickly deduces that Light is both the second L and the first Kira, but cannot prove it. Using the criminal prosecutor Teru Mikami as a proxy, Light attempts to once again cast suspicion away from himself. However, it is Mikami's ability to predict Kira's will that ultimately proves to be Light's undoing, and Light is revealed as Kira during a final clash between himself and Near.

The exact series of ending events differs between mediums, though Light always dies in the same manner: Ryuk writes Light's name in his Death Note. In the manga, after his attempts to write Near's name down are thwarted, Light begs Ryuk to help him, which Ryuk naturally refuses. In the anime, Light manages to flee the warehouse after Mikami commits suicide, and as he hides in a nearby warehouse, Ryuk writes his name in his Death Note from a tower. As Light slowly closes his eyes, an apparition of L appears before Light, mirroring Light standing over L in episode 25 at L's death. The film ends similar to the manga, but Light is initially led to believe that Ryuk will help, only to discover otherwise. He dies in his father's arms (who in this version does not die), begging him to believe that he acted as Kira to put justice, which Soichiro had taught him since his childhood, into practice.

Misa Amane (弥 海砂, Amane Misa) is a famous model, singer and actress in Death Note. When she comes into possession of the Death Note, given to her by the Shinigami Rem, she becomes the second Kira to attract the attention of the first. Upon realizing that the first Kira is Light, she develops an immense crush on him. Misa is hyperactive and knowingly allows Light to easily manipulate her, claiming she doesn't mind as she loves him so much. She has a habit of referring to herself in the third person by calling herself "Misa-Misa". She is voiced by Aya Hirano in the Japanese anime and by Shannon Chan-Kent in the English dub. In the live-action film, she is played by Erika Toda; while Misa has blonde hair in the manga and anime, it is brown in the film.

Her experience with the Death Notes alters her intended time of death four times. Her life is first extended beyond her date of death when the Shinigami Jealous, who had fallen in love with her, kills her intended murderer, killing himself and adding his remaining lifespan to hers. Her life is then halved twice: first by trading for the Shinigami Eyes with Rem and then again with Ryuk after losing and regaining possession of the Death Note. Finally, her life is extended once more when Rem kills L to protect her, thereby adding her remaining lifespan to Misa's.

Misa decides to devote her life to Light because he punished the criminal that killed her parents when she was younger. Misa saw multiple delays in the killer's trial, seemingly headed for an innocent verdict, before Kira killed him. Light uses her to kill those criminals whose names he cannot learn, since the Shinigami Eyes allow her to learn names from seeing people's faces. Her eyes also prove useful in identifying other Death Note users.

While Misa does not play a part in the finale, having lost her memory of the Death Note by then, her fate in the manga is covered in How to Read 13. As the book explains, Misa falls into despair after learning of Light's death through Matsuda and commits suicide one year later. The cloaked woman who appears at the end of the manga is identified as a follower of Kira, not Misa. In the anime's finale, Misa's suicide is neither mentioned nor seen. Instead, she is seen standing at the edge of a rooftop, looking at the horizon with a sad face.

In the films, Misa is seen filming a dorama called "Misa-Misa's Happy Sweets", where she states that she is baking treats to make her enemies fat. After filming of that section ends, she expresses support for Kira on camera. A supervisor states that the section will be cut due to controversies. Her intended murder is shown to be Sakajo, the assistant director for "Happy Sweets". Instead of Rem delivering Jealous's Death Note, it just falls in front of Misa, who immediately picks it up and finds Rem after reading the notebook's rules. Misa does not commit suicide in either of the films, as her memory from the incident and the Death Note is erased. She still harbors her obsession for Light and bids him a happy birthday from her mini-shrine of him, feeling that a piece of her life is somehow missing.

Yotsuba Group

The Yotsuba Group is a group of eight members in the Yotsuba Corporation. On Light's instruction, Rem delivers the Death Note to one of them. They meet weekly to discuss the killing of key individuals from competing companies to maintain dominance in the business industry. While they realize that one of them is Kira, they do not know which one. The group consists of:

The Death Note ends up in the hands of Kyosuke Higuchi, who Rem describes as "the worst kind of human" since he uses the Death Note solely for his own selfish desires. During L's probe on the group, Hatori is killed by Higuchi after stating intentions to leave. Rem aids in the capture of Higuchi by revealing his identity to Misa. Misa uses her status as the second Kira to get him to admit to being Kira on tape. Higuchi is captured in an elaborate setup concocted by Light and L, and once Light touches the Death Note, thereby regaining his memories of being the real Kira, he uses a Death Note scrap to kill Higuchi.

The remaining six members eventually die of heart attacks. Rumors of Kira's responsibility in the deaths causes Yotsuba's share prices to drop sharply. In the Director's Cut edition, they die by suicide or through accidents. In the film, the role of the Yotsuba group is replaced by Takada.

Name: Teru Mikami

Teru Mikami (魅上 照, Mikami Teru) is selected as the new Kira by Light when he feels that it is dangerous for Misa to keep the Death Note any longer. Mikami is a criminal prosecutor and an avid supporter of Kira. He also has an uncanny insight into Kira's way of thinking, making him a useful proxy for Light. In the anime, he is voiced by Masaya Matsukaze.

As a child, Mikami was bullied at school for his sense of righteousness. He wishes to punish those he considers to be evil, an attitude cultivated by the untimely deaths of all those whom he had judged to be evil as a child (this is well before Light becomes Kira). Kira's ability to kill under the same circumstances impresses Mikami, and he worships Kira as God for it. Like Light, Mikami is extremely intelligent and intuitive, able to deduce what Light would do as Kira with almost perfect accuracy. He is smart enough to act on his own without direction while simultaneously carrying out Kira's orders. However, while Light is almost always calm and collected, Mikami appears to be psychologically unbalanced, muttering "delete" repeatedly to himself while writing in the Death Note. He also tends to jump and make erratic slashing movements with his pen, swinging it as if it were a sword. Mikami goes beyond Light in his ambition, wishing to judge the unproductive and those who have committed crimes in their past, even if they have since reformed, which alarms Light.

Mikami's devotion to Kira, as well as his insight into Kira's thoughts, ultimately leads to their deaths. When Takada is kidnapped by Mello, Mikami correctly predicts that Kira would want to silence her, since she is in possession of several Death Note pages. He breaks his normal routine to retrieve his Death Note and kill her, unaware that Light has already done so. This allows Near's team to find his note and switch it with a fake, foiling Light's plan to gather all of his antagonists in the same place for Mikami to dispose of them. In the manga, an enraged Mikami starts to blame Light for putting them into their situation, claiming that Kira is no god, contrary to what he so fervently believed before. Ten days after he is captured and detained, he dies after going insane. Mikami's death leads Matsuda to believe that Near used the Death Note to control Mikami's actions, allowing Near to convict Light. In the anime, Mikami commits suicide with a fountain pen, allowing Light to flee the warehouse (though it cannot be asserted whether he did so on purpose or out of desperation). Mikami does not appear in the film versions of Death Note.

Name: Kiyomi Takada

Kiyomi Takada (高田 清美, Takada Kiyomi) Kiyomi Takada first appears for a short period as Light's classmate and girlfriend. She is a popular girl also known as "Miss To-Oh" ("Miss Todai" in Japanese), short for To-Oh University, or "'Refined' Takada" (Seiso Takada, which means something similar to "plays hard to get"). She returns later in the story as an announcer of NHN (parody of NHK) chosen to be Kira's spokesperson to the world. This decision is made by Mikami, not Light. Mikami recognizes her as someone who supports Kira, albeit not as vocally as he, that could send out Kira's word accurately and in a calm and straightforward manner. As a college student, she is voiced by Masumi Okamura in the Japanese anime and Heather Doerksen in the English dub. The older version of the character is voiced by Maaya Sakamoto. In the film, she is played by Nana Katase, and has longer hair than she does in the anime and manga.

Despite her reputation, Light notes that Takada is actually quite intelligent. Near, however, believes that she is merely studious, having done a background check as opposed to Light's grade-based assessment. According to How to Read 13, Takada was born on July 12, 1985.

Light first dates Takada to keep suspicion away from himself and Misa as the two Kiras. After learning that she is Kira's spokesperson, he romances her once again in order to covertly deliver messages to Mikami. When Light reveals his identity as Kira to her, she states that he is the only man she has ever respected, and him being Kira only further enhances her attraction to him. As part of his plan to eliminate Near and his other adversaries, Light has Mikami give several pages of the Death Note to Takada so she can judge criminals, while Mikami uses a fake notebook to write the same names. This is a contributing factor in Light's eventual death. When Mello kidnaps Takada, she uses a page of the Death Note to kill him under Light's instruction. Both Light and Mikami write her name into the Death Note as a suicide by fire to remove any evidence of her Death Note use, but in doing so Mikami exposes his Death Note's hiding place, allowing Near to steal it and replace it with a fake.

In the film, Takada's role is combined with that of Higuchi, the third Kira. Here, she kills those who stand in her way of a promotion. In this version, she never learns that Light is Kira. Her fate is more or less the same as Higuchi's, with Light killing her after she is taken into police custody.

Shinigami

Shinigami, or Death Gods, are demon-like beings who live in the Shinigami realm. Shinigami are functionally immortal, able to extend their lives indefinitely by writing the names of humans in their Death Notes. By writing the name of a human whose fated time of death has not yet come, Shinigami have their lifespan increased by the amount that human would have lived (e.g. a thirty-year-old who would have lived to the age of sixty would yield thirty years). As Ryuk describes it, life in the Shinigami realm is incredibly dull; Shinigami do little more than gamble constantly, and using the Death Note is considered something workaholics do. The main Shinigami featured in the series are Ryuk and Rem.

Kira Special Investigation Unit

Name: L Lawliet

L Lawliet (エル・ローライト, Eru Rōraito), commonly known by his given name alone, is considered the world's greatest detective. Through clever use of aliases, he's also known as the world's second and third greatest detectives, Eraldo Coil and Deneuve, respectively. When it becomes clear that the one known as Kira is responsible for the many heart attacks among the criminal population, L makes it his duty to bring him to justice. He is voiced by Kappei Yamaguchi in the Japanese anime and by Alessandro Juliani in the English dub. In the live-action film, he is played by Ken'ichi Matsuyama.

It is implied that L was a former resident of Wammy's House, one of Watari's orphanages, as well as a safe haven and educational facility specifically for intellectually-gifted children. L stayed in England for five years, and during that time he was the champion in tennis for the England Junior Cup.

Though outwardly appearing as disheveled and languid, L is a genius on par with Light. His powers of deduction and insight allow him to draw conclusions from the smallest of clues. Furthermore, L's reputation makes others take his conclusions seriously, even when based on a seemingly flimsy pretext. He tends to second-guess everything he is presented with, and is extremely meticulous and analytical. He has several quirks such as preferring to crouch rather than sit, loving sweet foods like desserts and fruits, and holding items very delicately. He claims that his eating habits have not made him overweight because the brain uses the most calories of any organ in the body. Likewise, he explains that his odd sitting habits are a matter of necessity, as his reasoning ability would drop 40% if he sat normally.

L is quite secretive and only communicates with the world through his assistant, Watari. He never shows his face to the world, instead representing himself with a capital L in Old English 5 Font. He only first reveals himself to the Kira investigation team, and has them refer to him as Ryuzaki (竜崎, Ryūzaki) for discretion. When he attends Light's college, he takes the name Hideki Ryuga (流河 旱樹, Ryūga Hideki), deliberately using the name of a popular singer to see if Light was Kira. Even the Kira investigation team never learns his true name.

Once L begins investigating the Kira case, he quickly suspects that Light Yagami is Kira, but cannot obtain any concrete evidence. Even with Light's numerous successful ruses that seem to indicate he can't be Kira, L remains skeptical. Because of his suspicions, L decides to join To-Oh University, the university that Light attends. He reveals to Light that he is L; this, combined with his fake name, ensures that Light (if he were Kira) would never try to kill him for fear of quickly being discovered. Although L cannot shake the conclusion that Light is the first Kira, Light is the only person L had ever identified or connected with, and he openly states on one occasion that even though it would hurt his pride to admit that he has been wrong, he hopes that he would be. Despite Kira being L's opponent, at the core, Light and L share many traits, including extraordinary intelligence and strong opinions of what constitutes true justice. Light manages to kill L by manipulating Rem into killing L for him, making her believe that she must kill him for the sake of Misa's life. During his final days, L seems very depressed, mostly because he, somehow, knew that his death was drawing near. Since L's efforts at the time would have actually cast suspicion on Misa (again; Light's creation of a fake rule had cleared them both, and L was about to test it), this also kills Rem, as Shinigami cannot use a Death Note to extend the lives of others intentionally. L's last sight before death is Light triumphantly smiling over his defeated rival, and in his last moment L confirms to himself that Light is the first Kira. In the anime's finale, an apparition of L appears before the dying Light, who closes his eyes in the same fashion L does in the 25th episode.

In the film, L's death is quite different. Having already written his name in Misa's Death Note beforehand, Rem's attempt to kill him fails (regardless of the time specified, the first Death Note used takes priority). Rather than Near capturing Light later on, it is L's self-sacrifice that allows the investigation team to eventually apprehend Light. After Ryuk kills Light, Ryuk offers L the Death Note. L refuses, and Ryuk calls him "no fun" for it. Twenty-three days after writing his name in the Death Note, during which he burns all the remaining Death Notes and has a final conversation with Soichiro, L dies peacefully while eating a chocolate bar, with a picture of Watari lying right beside him. A third film is scheduled to premiere in February of 2008, titled L: Change the WorLd. It is a film spin-off which focuses on L's final twenty-three days of living after defeating Kira.

Name: Soichiro Yagami

Soichiro Yagami (夜神 総一郎, Yagami Sōichirō) is Light's father and a police officer. After most of the police resign from the Kira case for fear of being killed, he leads the remains of his investigation team under L's command. While working with L, he goes by the alias Shijuro Asahi (朝日 四十郎, Asahi Shijūrō) as protection from Kira's ability to kill by name. He is voiced by Naoya Uchida in the Japanese anime and Chris Britton in the English dub. In the film, he is played by Takeshi Kaga, best known as Chairman Kaga of Iron Chef.

As work on the Kira case begins, he becomes disappointed with the lack of police cooperation in capturing Kira, eventually joining forces with L to form a special investigative team. He suffers from a heart attack early in the story, but it is stress-related and non-fatal, instead of the deadly killing method Kira uses. Even with the heart attack, he insists on remaining helpful to the team, going as far as breaking into the Sakura TV station using a police bus (Misa, having the Shinigami Eyes, had simply been killing everyone who approached up to that point) in order to stop the second Kira's broadcast and obtain the tapes.

When L begins to suspect Light of being Kira, Soichiro is unwilling to believe his son would be capable of such a thing. Much later, after L is killed and replaced by Light, he is instrumental in regaining the Death Note which Mello had pressured them into relinquishing by threatening Soichiro's daughter. Using Kira's Death Note, which Misa delivers to him under Light's instruction, Soichiro trades with Ryuk for the Shinigami Eyes. Using the eyes, he is able to learn Mello's real name, Mihael Keehl, thereby giving Light access to the same information. However, before he can kill Mello, he is fatally wounded by one of Mello's gang members. Because Light has given up his Death Note and therefore his lifespan is visible, Soichiro dies happily believing that Light isn't Kira. Ryuk suggests that because Sochiro never really used the Death Note, he died peacefully, as opposed to the curse of unhappiness Ryuk had attributed to all Death Note owners before.

Soichiro's fate differs in the films. He never obtains the Death Note in this version, and eventually learns that Light is Kira. He apprehends his son by agreeing to L's plan and following the instructions on the fake Death Note, which Light wrote in to kill Soichiro, stating that Soichiro was a nuisance. After reporting the consequences of these events and the coinciding police reports to L, he salutes the mastermind with gratitude, proud to have known and worked beside him. He is the last person to see L alive before the Death Note takes effect. One year after the incident on Light's birthday, he visits Light's grave site with the rest of the family and prays that Sayu would keep believing that his son died in his fight against Kira, instead of being Kira himself.

Name: Tota Matsuda

Tota Matsuda (松田 桃太, Matsuda Tōta}, romanized as "Touta Matsuda" in the English manga) is the younger and more outspoken member of the investigation team. He takes the alias Taro Matsui (松井 太郎, Matsui Tarō) while working with L, and also becomes Misa Amane's manager once she and Light join. Despite working to capture Kira, which he knows must be done, Matsuda admits that a part of him recognizes the good Kira is doing, even if he knows it's the wrong way to go about it. As such, he is somewhat supportive and sympathetic towards Kira's followers, though he doesn't let it get in the way of his work. Despite his excitable, naïve personality, Matsuda manages to stay alive through quite a few dangerous times. Matsuda sees Soichiro as his mentor. He is voiced by Ryō Naitō in the Japanese anime and Vincent Tong in the English dub. In the film, he is played by Sōta Aoyama.

Though allocated to something of a support role to the more active members of the team, Matsuda plays a crucial role in the investigation of the Yotsuba Group. Wanting to be of use, he sneaks into the company's building and spies on the board of directors, learning of their casual conversations about eliminating potential competition. However, he is caught in the act. He uses his position as Misa's manager to fool them into thinking he's scouting for potential opportunities, then under L's direction fakes his death to prevent them from learning that he's using an alias. His position as Misa's manager is filled by Mogi to complete the ruse.

When Higuchi is discovered to be the current Kira, Matsuda risks his life in a ploy to capture Higuchi by appearing on Sakura TV to reveal Kira's identity. An accident is fabricated by the team to have Matsuda reveal his face, making Higuchi take the threat seriously. Since Higuchi does not possess the Shinigami Eyes at the time, and all other traces of Matsuda's real name and face are eliminated, Higuchi is forced to trade for the Eyes and go to the station in person, allowing the investigation team to capture him.

When Light is revealed to be Kira at Yellowbox Warehouse, Matsuda is the most shocked of the team. His respect for Light up until that point, combined with Soichiro's seemingly pointless sacrifice in light of the revelation, leaves Matsuda outraged. When Light attempts to write Near's name on a piece of the Death Note, Matsuda repeatedly shoots him, and it takes the entire team to keep him from killing Light on the spot. In the manga, after Light is killed by Ryuk, Matsuda suspects that, to help with Light's capture, Near had used the Death Note to control Mikami's actions. Ide believes that Matsuda merely "wishes" this were true, probably because he thought of Light as a friend.

Kanzo Mogi (模木 完造, Mogi Kanzō) is one of the most dedicated members of the investigation team, but also one of the most reserved. While working with L, he takes the alias Kanichi Moji (模地幹一, Moji Kan'ichi). He is voiced by Kazuya Nakai in the Japanese anime and John Murphy in the English dub. In the film, he is played by Ikuji Nakamura.

Mogi rarely speaks, even when someone presents an opinion he agrees with; this is exemplified in his silent reaction to the theories that Near was presenting to him. Along with Aizawa, he is one of the first members of the investigation team who begins to warm to Near's theory that Light is Kira. He is shown to be an excellent actor, becoming an excited and cheery manager for Misa on demand and in seeming contradiction to his usual demeanor.

After Matsuda is forced to fake his death, Mogi replaces him as Misa's manager. Later on, Mello demands to meet Mogi in order to investigate Kira, but tricks Mogi into meeting Near at the SPK headquarters. Mogi is then held hostage by Near until Aizawa arrives to rescue him. This sequence of events was left out of the anime adaptation, and instead Mogi is merely taken by Near to force a confrontation between the two teams. In the film, Mogi is killed by Misa during the Sakura TV incident, instead of Ukita being killed as in the manga and anime.

Name: Shuichi Aizawa

Shuichi Aizawa (相沢 周市, Aizawa Shūichi) joins the investigation team early on, but returns to his regular job later on. Since the police refuse to support any continued investigation of Kira, Aizawa leaves for the sake of his family, despite the fact that L would have paid all of his living expenses anyway. He returns after L's death. While with the investigation team, he takes the alias of Aihara (相原) He is voiced by Keiji Fujiwara in the Japanese anime and Trevor Devall in the English dub. In the film, he is played by Shin Shimizu.

Aizawa has a prominent role in the latter half of the series, suspecting Light of being Kira after the 13-day rule for writing names in the Death Note, failure to do so meaning death, is revealed to be fake. After listening to Near's theories, he becomes more convinced, and drops hints that Light is the new L, whom Near had suspected was Kira. Though his suspicions are obvious, Light underestimates him, and Aizawa learns about Light's written conversations with Takada during their wire-tapped meetings by covertly marking the notepads. In the finale, he becomes the leader of the investigation team.

Hirokazu Ukita (宇生田 広数, Ukita Hirokazu), compared to the other members of the investigation team, is the most emotional and quickest to act. When Misa has Sakura TV broadcast a message from her as Kira, Ukita rushes to the station to stop the broadcast without any prompting by the rest of the team. Since Misa has the Shinigami Eyes, she kills him as soon as he approaches the door. His death, as well as several smaller personality factors, prove to the investigation team that the broadcast was from a different Kira, as the real one (Light) needs both a name and a face to kill. He is voiced by Hidenobu Kiuchi in the Japanese anime and Jeremy From in the English dub. In the film, he is portrayed by Tatsuhito Okuda. The film version also survives the incident; instead, it is the more reserved Mogi who is killed.

Name: Hideki Ide

Hideki Ide (伊出 英基, Ide Hideki) plays a relatively minor role in the investigative team. Aside from helping to coordinate their efforts, his actions do not widely affect the overall plot. His main point is during the caputre of Higuchi, where he organizes a blockade of police cars to trap Higuchi. He is voiced by Hideo Ishikawa in the Japanese anime and Brian Dobson in the English dub. The character does not exist in the film version.

Sanami

Sanami (佐波) only appears in the film adaptation of Death Note, portrayed by Miyuki Komatsu. She is the only female team member, as opposed to the all-male team in the manga and anime. In the second film, she tends to Misa during her captivity and is more critical of the methods used by the investigation team, often calling them cruel. Her character is similar to that of Matsuda, sans Kira empathy.

Name: Quillsh Wammy A.K.A Watari

Watari (ワタリ) is L's assistant, providing logistics to the investigation team. Before the team is formed, he is the only person who has seen L, and the only one capable of contacting L directly. Like L, he represents himself with an Old English "W" on computer screens. On the surface he is Quillsh Wammy (キルシュ・ワイミー, Kirushu Waimī), a famous inventor who founded The Wammy's House, an orphanage for gifted children, in Winchester. Watari is well trained in espionage and marksmanship, the latter of which he shows by shooting out the tire of Higuchi's car and then a gun from his hand without injuring him. He is voiced by Kiyoshi Kobayashi in the Japanese anime and French Tickner in the English dub. In the film, he is played by Shunji Fujimura.

Watari dies shortly before L, killed by Rem. As he dies, he deletes all the data following the Kira case. In the film, however, he dies in an elevator next to Misa while escorting her to L in order to reassess her guilt of being the Second Kira. In the manga and anime, it is L's attempt to test one of the Death Note's fake rules which inspires Rem to kill them both. The Wammy house caretaker, Roger Ruvie, takes over as the new Watari following the successful resolution of the Kira case.

According to Death Note: How to Read 13, Watari was originally designed to be man with only a single strip of hair. Illustrator Takeshi Obata redesigned him to be an old man.

L's successors

In the manga and anime, two gifted children were assigned to carry on investigation of Kira following L's death: Near and Mello. Both characters had previously resided in The Wammy's House, an orphanage founded by Watari in the United Kingdom. Each one's methods differ significantly, but their objective is the same: to prove themselves as the true successors to L by doing what their predecessor could not; expose and defeat Kira once and for all. Neither of the characters exist in the film versions, since L lives longer than he did in the manga and anime.

Near (ニア, Nia), real name Nate River (ネイト・リバー, Neito Ribā), is the younger of the two and the more level-headed, calmly assessing the situation while Mello is more emotional and quick to act. Much like L, Near uses the Old English "N" to represent himself, though he only briefly calls himself by the initial since Light discovers his actual alias. He is voiced by Noriko Hidaka in the Japanese anime. He does not appear in the films.

Near shares several behavioral similarities with L. He is usually seen hunched over than sitting, much like L crouches. He also various toys which he uses in his theories, vaguely recalling L's obsession with sweets. Personality-wise, Near is somewhat more cold. He initially shows no emotions towards L's death, saying L is a loser in the game of tracking down Kira; however, he later reveals that both he and Mello have great respect for L and want to prove themselves by succeeding him. He is fairly blunt, and often insults people who support Kira or otherwise stand in his way, although usually not to their faces. Compared to L, Near is somewhat more decisive, as he tends to judge on little evidence and pursues hypothetical hunches. This is demonstrated when he claims that Light is definitely Kira based on little information. Often using the terms 'winning' and 'losing', he seems to consider the investigation as one of his games.

Though he starts with no leads or clues, Near successfully identifies the events unfolding during the capture of Higuchi, and points out the existence of the Death Note to President Hoope. With authority from Hoope, the SPK (Secret Provision for Kira) is established to investigate Kira. The SPK consists of selected agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Central Intelligence Agency, as well as Near. After Light retrieves the Death Note stolen by Mello, Mello informs Near of the fake rules Ryuk wrote in it, leading Near to suspect that the new L is Kira. From various information he gains from Mello and Aizawa, Near deduces that Light is the new L. He also deduces that Mikami is acting as Light's proxy.

In their final confrontation, Near uses Kira's own plan to eliminate all his adversaries against him by switching Mikami's Death Note with a fake. Since Mikami naturally excludes Light from his victims, Light is exposed as Kira. Near attributes his success not only to Mikami's miscalculation in killing Takada, but also to Mello, whose kidnapping of Takada was the key to his victory. He claims that neither of them could surpass L alone, but together (intentionally or not) have done so.

Mello (メロ, Mero), real name Mihael Keehl (ミハエル・ケール, Mihaeru Kēru), is Near's rival. When it is decided that they should work together to find Kira, Mello refuses, citing an inability to work with Near, who he is considered second to. Mello is voiced by Nozomu Sasaki in the Japanese anime.

Similar to L's fondness for sweets, Mello is often seen eating bars of chocolate. Unlike L or Near, however, Mello is much more outgoing and emotional, to a fault at some points. He is quite intelligent and resourceful, able to set up elaborate plans thanks to his Mafia connections. Mello wears leather most of the time, unlike Near or L, who wear more casual clothing. He also appears to be less secluded in terms of his friends and hobbies, and seems to be fond of biking.

Mello decides to find Kira his own way by joining the Mafia (assumed to be located in Los Angeles, California). He kidnaps the Director of the Japanese Police to get the Death Note from the Kira investigation team. When Light kills the man, Mello kidnaps Sayu Yagami. Light cannot bring himself to kill her, and his father turns over the Death Note. Light stages a raid on Mello's hideout with Misa's help, having one of Mello's gang members mail the address to him using the Death Note then mailing his own Death Note to the investigation team. Soichiro Yagami opts to trade for the Shinigami Eyes and kill Mello, but is only able to learn his name before being fatally wounded. Mello escapes capture by blowing up his own hideout; though he survives, the left side of his face is badly scarred.

After Mello escapes, he meets Near and gives him information on the rules of the Death Note in exchange for his only photograph left in the world, which, before the exchange, is in Near's hands. Mello tricks Mogi into meeting Near in New York, so in thanks, Near finds a round-about way of letting Mello know what Aizawa told Near. With the same information, Mello also comes to the conclusion that Light is Kira. Mello's last act is to kidnap Takada (whom Lidner instructs to get on Mello's bike). He dies when Takada writes his name on a piece of the Death Note, as per Light's instructions, but in doing so lays the foundation for Light's defeat, since Mikami exposes his Death Note's hiding place when trying to kill Takada. While Halle states that Mello may have been trying to help Near discover that Mikami's real notebook was hidden, Near is more skeptical, doubting that Mello thought that far ahead.

Name: Mail Jeevas A.K.A Matt

Matt (マット, Matto), real name Mail Jeevas (マイル・ジーヴァス, Mairu Jīvasu, pronounced like "mile" rather than "male"), is a cohort of Mello's. He is also a former resident of Wammy's orphanage, though not actually one of L's successors, considered behind both Mello and Near in that regard. He does some espionage work for Mello and is an accomplice in Takada's kidnapping. He is voiced by Tomohiro Nishimura in the Japanese anime.

Matt follows orders without question. During their kidnapping of Takada, he acts as a distraction, luring off the majority of Takada's bodyguards. He attempts to confront them with a hidden gun, but is shot repeatedly by all thirteen. Mello posthumously apologizes to Matt after learning of his death on TV.

Minor characters

Special Provision for Kira members

The United States government orders the creation of the SPK, under the leadership of Near. In addition to the three members listed below, there are several characters not mentioned that are briefly part of the SPK, but Mello kills them using the Death Note. None of the following characters exist in the film version.

Name: Halle Bullook A.K.A Halle Lidner

Halle Lidner (ハル・リドナー, Haru Ridonā), real name Halle Bullook (ハル・ブロック, Haru Burokku), works for Near as part of his investigation team, along with Gevanni and Rester. She is a former CIA agent. She is voiced by Akeno Watanabe in the Japanese anime.

While Lidner's role in the anime is minimal, her motivations are made much clearer in the manga. Here, Lidner knows Mello and leaks SPK information to him without Near's knowledge. When Mello asks where her loyalties lie, she replies that she is on neither side, merely helping both of them because they are after Kira. Most significantly, she is partly responsible for Mello's decision to kidnap Takada, informing him of Near's final plan beforehand. He replies, "I'm the only one who can do it." This can be seen as the real push that drove Mello to kidnap Takada and eventually save the lives of both investigation teams.

Stephen Gevanni

Stephen Gevanni, real name Stephen Loud, works for Near as part of his investigation team, along with Lidner and Rester. He is assigned to follow Mikami for much of the case, and it is his meticulous analysis of Mikami's personal habits which allow him to find Mikami's Death Note and swap it with a fake. He is voiced by Hiroki Takahashi in the Japanese anime.

Commander Rester

Commander Rester, real name Anthony Carter, plays a support role in the SPK, often coordinating the team's efforts alongside Near.

Mello's group

Though Mello's gang is fairly large, only one character is given any significant coverage.

Jack Neylon

Jack Neylon, real name Kal Snyder, is a member of Mello's gang. He does not exist in the film. He is the holder of Shidoh's Death Note after it is given to the gang by the Kira investigation team. Before Mello joined, he was involved in drug trafficking and illegal weapons sales; neither charge stuck due to lack of evidence, despite four separate arrests. After Shidoh tracks down his Death Note, Jack performs the eye trade with him. This proves a critical point in Light's failed raid on Mello's gang, as he was unaware of Shidoh's existence, though the first raid and eye deal were removed from the anime adaptation. Light uses the Death Note to have mail him the address of Mello's hideout, and he dies on November 10, 2009 at 11:59 PM. He is voiced by Takashi Matsuyama in the Japanese anime.

Yagami family

Name: Sachiko Yagami

Sachiko Yagami (夜神 幸子, Yagami Sachiko) is Light's mother and Soichiro's wife. She is oblivious to Light's ownership and use of the Death Note. When Light is allowed in the investigation team to help L catch Kira, he tells his mother that he has decided to run away to live with Misa. In the second film's conclusion, Sachiko is decorating a cake for her late son's birthday. Along with Sayu, she presumably believes that Light died in pursuit of Kira. Ai Satō voices her in the Japanese anime and Saffron Henderson voices her in the English dub. In the films, Michiko Godai portrays her.

Sayu Yagami (夜神 粧裕, Yagami Sayu) is Light's younger sister. Like her mother, she never learns of Light's possession of the Death Note. In the manga and anime, Mello's gang kidnaps her in an attempt to extort the Death Note from her father, which proves successful. Though she is returned unharmed, she falls into a state of shock and becomes unresponsive to everyone, including her family. In the film, these events never take place. Instead, she is inadvertently responsible for revealing Light's identity as Kira to Misa when she temporarily falls into shock upon seeing Mogi die. Light and Soichiro have to carry her away, which allows Misa to pick Light out among the crowd. Haruka Kudō voices her in the Japanese anime and Kelly Metzger voices her in the English dub. In the films, Hikari Mitsushima portrays her.

United States government

David Hoope

David Hoope (デイビット・ホープ, Deibitto Hōpu) is the President of the United States of America in the storyline. He assists in the formation of Near's SPK. In the manga, Mello's gang uses the Death Note to threaten President Hoope into helping them in various ways, including funding, weapons, and providing information about the SPK. President Hoope turns to L (Light at that point) in hopes of getting information about the Death Note, only to reveal to L that he is subject to Mello's threats. Light manipulates him into providing the same assistance that he offered the SPK with regard to the Kira case, leaving Light on the same competitive level as, or possibly with an advantage over, Near's SPK. He even calls a military attack on Mello's hideout under L's instruction. When the attack fails, President Hoope commits suicide to prevent Mello from writing his name and making him launch a nuclear strike, although it might also be Kira's work to cover his tracks. His suicide reasoning is somewhat ironic, as one of the rules of the Death Note states that the death and the actions leading up to it cannot be responsible for other deaths, otherwise the victim dies of a heart attack (the nuclear destruction of any portion of the world would certainly fall in this category). In the anime, he does not commit suicide as the character was merged with that of George Sairas. He is voiced by Aruno Tahara in the Japanese anime.

George Sairas

George Sairas is the Vice President of the United States of America in the storyline. He attributes Hoope's suicide to Kira, and, fearing for his life, makes acceptance of Kira national policy. This acquiescence, however, only invites Light to threaten him into an all-out siege on SPK headquarters.

Federal Bureau of Investigation

Name: Raye Penber

Raye Penber (レイ・ペンバー, Rei Penbā) is an investigator from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, sent to Japan to aid in tracking down Kira early in the story. He is assigned to investigate the Yagami family for any suspicious behavior. He has a fiancée, Misora, whom he tells not involve herself in the investigation for her own safety. Though from the United States, he has a Japanese mother and thus possess a distinct Japanese accent. In the Japanese anime, his identification card signature is spelled "Ray Penber". The English dub corrects the signature. He is voiced by Hideo Ishikawa in the Japanese anime and Michael Adamthwaite in the English dub. In the films, he is played by Shigeki Hosokawa.

Light learns of Raye's existence through Ryuk; Ryuk only tells Light because it felt like Raye was staring at him. It is during this incident that Ryuk offers Light the Shinigami Eyes, but Light refuses. Instead, Light sets up a bus jacking using the Death Note to learn Raye's name, failing to realize that Raye was going to give up on his investigation anyway. When he heads home, he tells his fiancée about the incident, which becomes trouble for Light later on. The next day, Light, in disguise, confronts Raye in Shinjuku Station. He kills an accused rapist to prove his power, then has Raye board the next train. Using the lives of Raye's family as collateral, Light has Raye write the name of his chief on a specially prepared page of the Death Note with causes of death already specified. It is hidden in a folder with slots cut out for the names, disguising its true purpose from Raye. After writing the chief's name, the chief emails a list of every active agent in Japan to those agents; Light directs Raye to fill in the blanks with the names, thereby killing the entire group. Light has Raye leave the Death Note page on the train and step out, and upon doing so Raye dies from a heart attack. His last sight is that of Light's face.

In the film, Raye is known as Raye Iwamatsu (レイ・イワマツ, Rei Iwamatsu). In this version, he is a counterterrorism agent headquartered in Dallas, Texas. In the film, Raye tells Misora that he suspects Light; this allows Misora to find Shiori. Raye cancels his reservations and leaves the hotel, causing a perplexed Misora to follow him. She watches as he boards a train at Asakabashi Station and encounters Kira. Raye does not see Kira in this version; instead, he talks to him using a walkie-talkie. Light kills the man sitting next to Raye and has him to prop the body so that it looks like the person is sleeping. The rest of the scene plays out in much the same way. Misora witnesses his death, drops her church documents, and cries his name repeatedly as she holds his dead body. Misora collapses and sobs at the end of the scene.

In the manga and anime, when Soichiro first hears about the deaths of the FBI agents, one member tells him that at least four of the agents died in Tokyo, two died in Kanagawa Prefecture, one died in Chiba Prefecture, and one died in Saitama Prefecture. In the film, the deaths of four male agents (Zapack, Denote, Belle, and Copen in that order) are depicted on the screen. The film states that at least five agents die in Tokyo, three agents die in Kanagawa, one agent dies in Chiba, and one agent dies in Saitama.

Naomi Misora (南空 ナオミ, Misora Naomi) is a former FBI agent and Raye Penber's fiancée. She left the FBI in October 2003, planning to marry Raye, move to the United States, and raise a family. After Raye's death, she decides to search for his killer. She is voiced by Naoko Matsui in the Japanese anime and Tabitha St. Germain in the English dub. In the films, she is played by Asaka Seto.

Before Raye's death, he tells Misora about the bus jacking incident in which he was forced to give away his name. Misora suspects that Kira might have set up the incident, leading her to believe that heart attacks are not the only method in which Kira can kill; Light had deliberately used only heart attacks to kill as a sort of "signature" for his work and to make minor killings go unnoticed. Light meets Misora at the investigation headquarters looking for his father. As the two talk, he realizes how much she has figured out and attempts to silence her. However, she uses an alias when introducing herself, thwarting Light's attempts. Light tricks Misora into showing him her Tokyo driver's license by claiming to be part of the investigation team. With that information, he uses the Death Note to have her commit suicide on January 1, 2004. Exactly one second before the Death Note takes effect, Light tells Misora that he is Kira; just enough time for her to realize her fate without being able to respond. To test the Death Note, Light offers to let Misora speak to his father, and as expected she simply concentrates on her eventual suicide. Misora's remains are never found.

Misora plays a much greater role in the first film, following her husband when he meets Kira and witnessing his death. She is unable to see Kira's face. Misora finds Shiori, and Shiori introduces her to Light. He recognizes Misora as the woman crying for Raye, but again is unable to kill her because she uses an alias in her dealings with him. Misora later kidnaps Shiori in an effort to force Light into using the Death Note to kill her, thus revealing himself as Kira. Soichiro sends in the police, which distracts Misora and allows Shiori to break free. Misora panics and kills Shiori, then commits suicide. It is later revealed that the entire incident was actually masterminded by Light, as he had already learned Misora's name by checking the marital registration for Raye at a Roman Catholic church, which he knew about since Misora dropped church documentation when Raye died. While the Death Note normally does not allow the victim to kill another person, Light wrote causes of death for both Shiori and Misora, allowing him to negate the rule by being responsible for both deaths.

Sakura TV

Name: Hitoshi Demegawa

Hitoshi Demegawa (出目川 仁, Demegawa Hitoshi), named Yuji Demegawa (出目川 裕志, Demagawa Yūji) in the films, is publicity hound and director of Sakura TV. He serves as Kira's spokesman before Mikami kills him for being greedy. He is voiced by Chafūrin in the Japanese anime and Ward Perry in the English dub. In the films, he is played by Magy.

Saeko Nishiyama

Saeko Nishiyama (西山 冴子, Nishiyama Saeko) is an anchorwoman for Sakura TV in the second film. She gains her position by having sex with Demegawa. Takada kills her by having her walk in the path of an eighteen wheeler truck in order to advance her own career. Nishiyama is portrayed by Sakura Uehara.

Aiber (アイバー, Aibā), real name Thierry Morello, is a professional con-man in the employ of L. He plays the role of Eraldo Coil (エラルド・コイル, Erarudo Koiru), one of L's detective aliases, during the investigation of the Yotsuba Group. After L's death, he is killed by Light. In the manga, he dies from liver cancer. In the anime, which shows Light writing his real name, he dies of a heart attack in front of his wife and son; the manga indicates additional relatives, but they are not mentioned by name or relation to him. Aiber uses his initial "A", just like L, when communicating through computers. Despite being armed during the capture of Higuchi, Aiber is not fond of weapons, and is a relatively peaceful man. He is voiced by Takuya Kirimoto in the Japanese anime.

She does the same for Higuchi's car, allowing the team to watch his desperate attempts to kill Matsuda. After L's death, she is killed by Light, dying of a heart attack while riding her motorcycle. Wedy also uses her initial in computer communication; to avoid confusion with Watari ("W"), she deliberately uses the lowercase form, "w". She is voiced by Miki Nagasawa in the Japanese version.

Hideki Ryuga (流河 旱樹, Ryūga Hideki) is a famous male pop idol. He is first shown on TV, with Sayu being impressed with him. He is the male lead opposite Misa in a movie filmed near Yotsuba headquarters. Ryuga is also featured as the leader of the White Team in Kōhaku Uta Gassen, which Misa fails to show up for because Near has her kidnapped. He is voiced by Kensuke Nishi in the Japanese anime and Paul Dobson in the English dub.

Shiori Akino (秋野 詩織, Akino Shiori) is a film-exclusive character, portrayed by Yū Kashii. She is Light's girlfriend, classmate, and childhood friend. Shiori dreams of working in law enforcement and feels some envy stemming from Light's good grades. Shiori disagrees with Kira's methods, stating that she does not like the terror they incite; she believes that the law should judge criminals. Shiori argues with the "pro-Kira" Light, unaware of the fact that Light is Kira. In an interview printed in Weekly Shonen Jump, the creators of the film stated that Shiori was added to the story to highlight Light's negative aspects.

Shiori witnesses the Osoreda bus hijacking along with Light, who masterminded it; in the manga and anime, a character named Yuri fills this role. After Raye's death, Misora finds Shiori after researching the bus incident. When Shiori asks about the fate of the man following Light, Misora tells Shiori that the man died. Misora has Shiori lead her to Light. Shiori does not believe that Light is Kira, and she believes that Misora is crazy.

In order to believably kill Misora, Light writes both her name and Shiori's in the Death Note. The cause of death for both compels Misora to take Shiori hostage at the art gallery and call Light in an attempt to expose him as Kira. Shiori breaks free of Misora's grasp, but Misora shoots her. Shiori and Light share a kiss just before she dies; Shiori feels comfort in how she had a kiss in public before dying. Misora then commits suicide, fulfilling the conditions of death as written by Light. By being directly responsible for both deaths, Light negates the rule stating that one death cannot cause the death of others. Shiori's death allows Light to gain sympathy from L and join the investigation team.

Ryotaro Sakajo

Ryotaro Sakajo (坂城 良太郎, Sakajō Ryōtarō) is a film-only character. He is the assistant director during the filming of Misa Amane's "Misa-Misa's Happy Sweets" video. He is obsessed with Misa, collecting a used tissue of hers after she throws it in the trash. In a sequence bridged between the two films, Sakajo corners Misa and brandishes a knife, stating that he wishes to die with her. Jealous, watching from the Shinigami realm, kills him to save Misa's life. In doing so, Jealous dies and his Death Note drops near Misa. In the manga and anime, Misa faces a similar but unnamed character who is simply said to be a stalker.
