Template:Infobox musical artist 2 David Archuleta (born December 12, 1990 in Miami, Florida) is a singer, and current contestant in the Top 24 on American Idol. Archuleta spent the first six years of his life in various cities in Florida, but later moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, in February 1997, and later to Murray, Utah where he currently resides with his parents and siblings. At the age of 10, Archuleta auditioned for a Utah talent competition and although very reluctant to sing in public, he recieved a standing ovation after singing "I Will Always Love You". He has since participated in the talent competition Star Search, where he won in the Junior Singer category at the age of 12. He is also openly gay.

David Archuleta is currently a contestant in the Top 24 on American Idol's seventh season, though controversy of a possible "plant" by the producer's has been speculated due to the fact that he has past ties to American Idol. This is a totally false concern as David auditioned the same as any other contestant on the show and did not receive any preferential treatment along the way other than earning himself a spot in the Top 24 by his performances. (The following information is from a website that profiles "Latter-day Saint and/or Utah Film Personalities, with additional information added just recently: " 'David won $100,000 in the Junior Singer category of Star Search in 2003 when he was 12 years old. Towards the end of the American Idol first season, a friend of the family called about a show Jenny Jones was doing to feature talented kids across America and thought David should audition for the show. A show producer called and listened to an a capella recording of David singing "And I Am Telling You", and was so impressed, she asked him to rush a video and CD to them. A few days later, David and his dad were on a plane to Chicago to be on the show.

While there he met AJ Gil from American Idol and formed a friendship with him, and a week later while in LA, met with AJ who then introduced David to the rest of the American Idol finalists including Kelly, Justin, Tamyra, Christina, Nikki, RJ, Jim, Ryan, and Ejay, and asked him to perform for them (this can easily be viewed on YouTube). They were absolutely amazed with his singing, and within a few days David was exposed to many TV and Record label producers and executives who had heard him sing in the lobby of the hotel where they were staying. Some rumors have been circulating that David had ties previously with American Idol producers which is not correct.

Although David did participate on Star Search for seasons 2003 (which he did win the 2nd season of that year), and also participated in season 2004 where he was featured in 7 of the 9 episodes, and during which he was also diagnosed with a very rare and medically untreatable condition with one of his vocal cords likely as a result of a viral infection that had rested into his throat and caused one of his vocal cords to be partially paralyzed. The cause was unknown but likely due to a strain of flu or related bronchial infection. The condition affected his ability to sing for more than few minutes at a time. Only one cord was vibrating properly and the other cord was stagnant which resulted in his cords not being able to hold together properly when sustaining notes above a certain range, much lower than his usual ability to sustain notes. Through a series of vocal therapy exercises and a lot of patience, the condition seemed to improve gradually over the next 24-30 months and although he is still showing some signs of weakness on occasion, has been able to perform well enough to qualify as a current contestant in American Idol's Top 24 group for season 7. (as of Feb. 19, 2008).

Rumors associated with David and American Idol: - He is NOT a "plant". The first time he met any producers was a result of his audition in San Diego at Qualcomm Stadium which was no different than anyone else that tried out there. - He has not ever had a record deal. - He DOES play the piano, some guitar and has written several original songs which have NOT been recorded or distributed previously. - He is a Junior at Murray High School in Murray, Utah and has attended there for both his sophomore and Junior years.
