King Egbert was the son of Ealhmund, King of Kent. He was born in about 770AD, and became King of Wessex in 802. In about 825, he achieved supremacy over the rulers of the other English kingdoms, and in 829, became King of Mercia. He married Redburga, a Frankish princess (possibly a sister of the emperor Charlemagne), and had two sons and a daughter. Egbert died in about 839, and was buried at Winchester.
