The hogtie is particularly stringent if the wrists are forced to touch the ankles, not just joined with a rope as in the picture. Often, the elbows and knees will be tied together as well. Forcing the elbows together too much carries a risk of dislocating the shoulders.

Classic "wrist to ankle" rope hogtie. Other bondage methods depicted are breast bondage, elbow bondage, and a crotch rope. Model is also wearing a muzzel gag.

The hogtie is a method of tying the limbs together, rendering the 'hogtied' person or animal immobile. Originally, it was used for pigs (hence the name); now it can also be applied to human sexual bondage and a method for subduing individuals sometimes employed by the police.

The hogtie, in the practice of sexual bondage for which it is most commonly known, typically has the person who is being tied lie down flat on the belly, with the ankles and wrists tied together behind the back of the person. The hogtie used on pigs and cattle has the limbs tied in front.

The term also applies figuratively to an instance where a person has said or done something which has unpleasant consequences, and from which they are unable to escape.

There is a significant risk of postural asphyxia in this position, in addition to the normal risks of restraint. In addition, tying anything around the neck has a high risk of death from strangulation.

Used in Sexual Bondage

The hogtie position in itself is particularly stringent as it places pressure on the abdomon creating difficulty in breathing. Depending on the flexability of the person, even a "light" hogtie can be very uncomfortable and cannot be maintained for very long. A more flexible person may also add other bondage techniques such as elbow bondage, breast bondage, and crotch ropes. Having the head pulled back either by using a suitably equiped harness gag or by using hair bondage can also dramatically increase the stringentness of the position.

A more stringent hogtie, with the ankles bound to the elbow ropes, pulling the person into a much tighter arch. Also shows her head pulled back using a head harness ball-gag.

The classic hogtie (pictured above) has the wrists tied to the ankles, however depending on the perason this may not be a particually stringent position. This method also leaves the opportunity for the tied person to free themselves of the hogtie.

A variation to the hogtie (pictures right) is to tie the ankles to suitably tied elbow bondage. This greatly increases the amount of tension that can be placed on the body, as well as leaving the knots controlling the position well out of reach of the person bound.

The victim can also be on his or her back. This can get uncomfortable after a while. Most people can turn over onto their front while hogtied, but if they are on a narrow sofa or bed, there is a danger of falling off, especially if they are blindfolded so cannot see what they are doing. The best position for releaving the tension on the body while in a hogtie is to roll onto ones side. However, if the stringentness of the position is high enough, a person may not be able to roll themselves onto their side at all.

The victim might be left in a kneeling position. It is not very difficult to get into a lying down position (on front, back or side), but it may be almost impossible to return to a kneeling position if the person is tied correctly.

Advanced Use

A suspended hogtie is the ultimate form of inescapable hogtie. This method of suspension bondage can take two forms. The first method starts with a conventional rope based hogtie, then by placing extra ropes around the upper body above and below the breasts as well as around the folded legs, these ropes can be used to lift the person into the air. Ropes can be placed in different areas to reduce the strain on the body being lifted in this manner. The second method is far simpler, but has much greater risk of dislocation of the arms.
