American usage tends more to the singular except in cases where the group name actually sounds plural; "The Beatles are..." and "The New York Yankees are..." sounds OK, but "Pink Floyd are..." and "IBM are..." sound funny because those names don't have "s" at the end. "The Boston Red Sox are..." is OK, since it sounds plural even if it's got an "x" instead of "s", but for non-plural-sounding team names like "The Miami Heat", "is" sounds better.
