On May 27, 2006, he defeated Fernando Montiel who is the current WBO Junior-bantamweight champion, by a 2-1 split decision. González is promoted by the Oscar de la Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions Inc. Gonzalez lost to WBC super-bantamweight champion Israel Vázquez on September 16, 2006 by knockout.
